Taking to an extreme? Not at all--at least from what I can hear a few thousand kilometers away with an ocean in between. Seriously though, I think you're onto something here--less is more, if you know what I mean. The tone you're drawing out is lovely--suave and poignant, and very well suited to this beautiful piece.
My experience is that the lute is all about quality not quantity - so if you can get a full sound on every note (both strings of a course) you don't need to push in order to produce a decent quantity of sound. Playing in a friendly acoustic helps, too!
Indeed, a gorgeous little piece of music. But not easy at all! Exercising it for years, still one mile to perfect. Thanks a lot for sharing Rupert.
