The sight of this instrument caused me to click on this video, and I was not disappointed ... how lovely a sound for this chaconne ... as a pianist who played violin for a little while, I would consider this as the perfect compromise!
Chaconne in D minor is arguably one of the most complex and hard to play of Bach's violin partitas - on the violin for which it is originally written, it is hard and virtuosic enough - and yet you, sir, play it on the nyckleharp with such great nuance and ability! It is a flawless interpretation from a musician of great ability!
The nyckelharpa is a bowed instrument, originally built and played in Sweden. Dating back to the seventeenth century, but it is still very common in traditional Swedish folk music
Unbelievable! At first sight, I believe there is an incredible tension on the strings and over the body of this marvel. The lower bridge is soooo strong. Fascinating.
@felicegreece OK. If one has the talent and ability to learn string fingering (which after 77 years, I do not), then perhaps this woukd seem silly to you, especially if you can play a stringed instrument. However, comma, this application would make it easier for a keyboard artist to scratch out a melody on a fiddle. I can play the Hell out of 'most any keyboard from a 7 manual organ (Think Atlantic City - I've played it) through pianos, accordions and melodicas. But something that needs bowing, blowing or stumming? Nope.

I have never seen a nyckelharpa being played over the elbow. Interesting technique, and beautiful sound, this is a very interesting use for such an instrument where i'd typically imagine a hurdy-gurdy being used.
The ingenious nickelharpa, to me is like an instrument made for by or for pianist/keyboardist who didn't want to spend the years it takes to develop the perfect intonation necessary to sound good on the violin. What a great instrument. Always wanted one.
It would definitely present challenges that have a difficulty equal to intonation practice, to play it well and at this level at least. Even though it might not seem this way, gut strings with key mechanisms like this require a lot of sensitivity and nuance to play.
@@paavobergmann4920 They nyckelharpa was developed from the hurdy-gurdy by incorporating its keyed components into bowed instruments. They are both descended from the organistrum, which has been depicted in art over a millennia ago and required two people to play.
What a cool instrument! It seems to have the same principle as the Hurdy Gurdy, with the exception that the player is bowing the strings himself instead of turning a crank... It even sounds very similar because of the clacking and shifting of the fretting mechanism. And, I must say, beautifully played!

Bravo from Japan. You notified me of the existence of this amazing and very traditional-looking musical instrument. I have never seen it before except for on this RUclips site. Actually, is it a long-history instrument and rarely or frequently played in this modern age in Europe? It seems to me that you can also play the violin and a keyboard instrument. Is it right? Anyway, I am sincerely thankful to you for giving me this wonderful opportunity where I could enjoy my favorite Chaconne.
I had never heard this instrument, one that gives orchestral heft to the pith of a solo violin. This is one of the most impressive performaces that I have ever heard of the Chaconne, a moement that usually puts a violin to its limit. Add to this it seems effortless. Should I be called to the orchesta of angels (I'm 68 and I know the nath and biology all too well for my comfort) then this is the instrument that I want to play.
I wish in my heart that my dad were still here to watch and listen to this. Mother was a darling, but this would have been beyond her. Marvelous performance. Splendid, beautiful instrument! My gratitude to the musician for the time of peaceful reflection. Thank you for posting it! ❤️❤️❤️
This is a great example of the kind of popular music that must’ve been circulating around in the Early Baroque; in the cafes, the salons. You know, where the Regular Folks would hang. Even though this piece obviously wasn’t written for “Bowed Nickelharpa”, it works So Well it’s easy to imagine that’s what it was originally scored for. For some reason it makes me wonder what sort of stuff JSB would come up with when he was just Fooling Around. Excellent Rendition ! 👍🏼
The nyckelharpa, with it's somewhat rough aspect and sound enhances the beautifully emotional side of Bach's chaconne. It's a bit as if the nyckelharpa was a blend between a violin and an organ, both instruments well known to Bach. Nice performance.
This is the first time I've seen and heard the nyckelharpa and it's an absolute delight to listen to the Chaconne being so magnificently played on it - Bravissimo!
