  • Combs and cutters on an electric shearing machine will get plugged up with lanolin/grease while shearing. When this happens half-way through an animal, you don't have time to take it all apart, clean it, and re-assemble. In this video, I will show you my secret trick for cleaning them quickly, to save you time, money, and frustration.

    This is great. Love that you don't need specialized cleaners or specialized cleaning equipment, just practical "Whatever you have on hand" items.
    Learning so much from your videos. We are considering getting a few Sheep for our small farm and being there is no Adult "4H" programs, this is a great way to learn.
    Always thought the Lanolin would help the Shearing blades, surprised to know it does not.

    Engine degreaser dose nothing to lanolin or natural grease. Hot water, soap and a stiff brush is more efficient to clean combs and cutters. I would also recommend changing the comb to one with less teeth and more of a gap as they are more suitable for shearing the breeds you have.

      The engine degreaser keeps my combs clean, shiny, and not rusty. Make sure to apply it when it's still hot. It works great for me! Check out my shearing video where I talk about the different combs and cutters I use (I use a 20, 13, and 10 tooth):

      A range of 30-40. If you take good care of the equipment, you can get multiple uses. We also have more than one shearing machine, so two people are shearing together. I've also heard that the ceramic cutters last longer, but I have not personally tried it yet.

    Hey just a tip, if you struggle that much to release the tension knob than the tension is MUCH too tight.

    • @ShearGoodness
      @ShearGoodness  Год назад +1

      You are correct. Having the tension too high can overheat and dull the equipment. I discuss tension in my Shearing Shetlands video and Sheep Shears 101 video. Admittedly, when I shot this video, we had been using the same comb and cutter for a few years in a row. It is much better to either sharpen or buy new ones each year, but I was trying to save money. We were at the end of shearing our flock too. In summary, in addition to regular lubrication and cleaning, it is also important to maintain sharpened or new combs/cutters to avoid needing to tighten the tension so much.

      @@Scperma I currently have 4 or 5 of Premier's Spitfire cutters and a few of their 13 tooth and 20 tooth combs. You can get multiple uses from them if cared for properly. They also offer sharpening services as an option. I have no affiliate links from them, I just like their products.

    Hello, i am a nob and every time a cut/ hurt my sheep when shearing, I don't know wether the sittings of shearer are not ok or any other problem, kindly guide me.

    • @ShearGoodness
      @ShearGoodness  2 месяца назад

      I would first make sure that the cutter is properly positioned in relation to the comb. Is your cutter too far back from the tip of the comb? This could cause the skin to pull up. I have a video that show how to place the comb and cutter. If that doesn't help, I would also try using a comb with many teeth, such as a 20 tooth. Also make sure the skin is taught and not loose or wrinkled. ruclips.net/video/cBNn_VI6dAM/видео.html

    Its ok for a couple off sheep not seveal hundred you be there all day just change the comb and cutter then soak them in soapy hot water then resharpen

    Just run the machine in water and dishwashingsoap, use a stiff brush to remove the grease and done. Or you can just shift shears and throw the dirty ones in soapwater for a few minutes and just rinse them off in hot water. Seems like a real struggle to scrape off the grease with scissors and risking to dull the shears.
    And as a bonus, engine degreasers are for alkaline greases and not biogreases. Same solves same and that's why you have to scrape it off meaning that the degreaser did exactly nothing other than removing the lubricant from the machine. That's my secret trick. ;)

      This may totally work for some. For me, I find it very time consuming to take it apart, wash it, and re set everything. Meanwhile the animal's patience is less than mine, lol.

    • @alexmcnoogle3119
      @alexmcnoogle3119 Год назад +1

      @@ShearGoodness no need for disassembly of the machine. Just run it in dishsoapwater, use the brush to remove the grease, oil up the shears and off you go. Takes about 15 secounds.
