ChatGPT and the suite of OpenAI projects (particularly Bing's new AI offering) have been in the news a lot lately and it got me wondering, what would happen if I asked ChatGPT to plan an itinerary in Paris? Would it work? Would it be amazing or terrible?
In all honesty, I found the results impressive. Granted the itinerary itself was obvious and impractical, but it wasn't the quality that impressed me so much as the interaction and the fact that it could spontaneously generate an itinerary at all, let alone an itinerary for Paris that was loosely sensible. Would I recommend following it? No. But is there a huge potential in tools like this for travelers in the future? Absolutely.
I also think that there are a lot of people in my related fields, whether creative or tourism, that still don't think of this as a game changer (whether threat or helpful tool). I don't have any answers myself, but it's something I'll certainly be thinking about a lot.

FAQ:
How long have you lived in France? Almost six years now, holy cow.
What do you miss most about ho- NACHOS
You're always talking about living on some ship. WHAT SHIP? - I made a "Draw My Life" video that explains a lot here: • Draw My Life
Where are you from originally? - Pullman, Washington - a small university/agricultural town near Idaho (and yes, the potatoes are amazing).
What do you film with? - I've made a lot of changes recently, but I try to keep my gear list up to date if you want to see what I use and buy some for yourself: bit.ly/JaysGearList
What do you edit with? - Adobe Premiere - it's pretty much all I've ever used since high school.
Aren't you ever freaked out by leaving your camera behind to film yourself? - Yep. But not too badly - I tend to be careful when I do.
Why are you living in #Paris? - Because I've always wanted to; I feel at home here: • Why I Want to Live in ...
Do you speak French? - Oui. • Un Jour en Francais (E...
Do you make money off RUclips? - Ha, sorta. I wish. It took me over 500 videos to make my first total $100 off adsense. I think it will slowly change, but VERY slowly.
I really enjoy your videos, how can I support you? - The easiest and best way to support me is through Patreon, where you can pitch in as little as $5/mo to help me make better videos: / jayswanson
I don't trust this Patreon thing - can I just paypal you? - Here's my ko-fi if that's your thing (and coffee is your game): ko-fi.com/jayswanson
But I want to send you something tangible! - I do have a wishlist on Amazon, though it's a bit complicated with the international shipping situation. So instead people often drop off or ship things to the Peloton Cafe in Paris for me.
Thanks for watching!

Love this video. Great idea. Your videos are fantastic, especially lately. Got you app, going to put it the test in about 6 weeks, cannot wait. Been way to long since I got a Paris fix!
I want to be ‘Sitting at the Louvre not giving 2 Fs about anyone or anything’ level of iconic.
I’m a travel advisor and there’s been talk in our industry of ChatGPT and AI “replacing” our jobs and I don’t see that happening any time soon, as you’ve demonstrated…there are so many better itineraries and guides out there if travelers want to plan their trips independently, such as writers and vloggers such as yourself. No need for an inaccurate and impersonal system that just draws from other text it finds online (it’s basically copying others’ writings but doing so without the ability to organize by location, travel distance, time, etc, as you’ve shown). Maybe in the future it’ll improve but I think it has a huge way to go and from what I’ve seen most people prefer travel advice that has a human, personal touch to it 😊
I'd definitely agree in the short term. I think it'll be fascinating to see how things go in 5-10 years. The main thing I remind myself, to stay sane at least, is that I only need a certain number of customers/patrons/supporters of my work to continue doing what I do. I don't have to take on the whole world. Something you'd think I'd already know, but a potentially disruptive technology like this helps me see it even more clearly. It helps it not feel like a threat.
The Marais is a state of mind. Love the whole arrondissement!🤩
Same!
It's a great one to stroll
Oh, man, you had me cracking up so many times during this. Great job as always, Jay! Hands-down the best Paris-based RUclipsr!
Lululemon is quite the charming boutique in Paris, I’m sure.
And the pigeon photo bomb…..priceless!
I found this video amusing. It is hard enough to learn your way around a new city without having an AI program sending you back & forth across it in different directions multiple times. I well remember my first arrival when I refused to give into jet lag & hit the ground running. Decided I would get "oriented" by going on the bateaux mouches, after that it was time to take the Metro (just for fun) without having any idea of where I was going. I was so fixated on becoming famiiar with the city my first day in that I refused to stop for dinner & insisted we could get a piece of fruit in the street market & keep going. So far my popularity with the friend I was with was quickly waning. So I indulged in a stop at a bar. That mixed well with jet lag. By this time it was about 10:00PM & I suddenly had no more energy & needed to get to the hotel & my bed ASAP before I crashed & burned. How did I manage all of this? No idea. Young & clueless. If only I'd had access to something like you guide...... People should really get a guide created by someone who had a first time in Paris & has lived there as a citizen for a while. Much better than Michelin! ; - >
Goes without saying that Jay's guide is a quantum leap better than a bot itinerary. Definitely recommended if anyone's just thinking about it. Great video, as always! 😊
Thank you!
Such a smart idea! Definitely won’t be taking guidance on *anything* from ChatGBT 😅
Just don't give it the launch codes
Thank you Jay. I'm going to Paris in April, second time, the 1st time I went there all by myself in 2013 and I spent a week. I loved that experience. This time I am going with both my children (27&14)
I so appreciate all you do to help us americans get a feeling of such beautiful city. Greetings from Cambridge, Massachusetts 👋
I love the effort you put in to get nice symmetrical and static shots throughout the video, but somehow manage to make it look effortless
1:44 Monsieur Jay Swanson launching forth the Spicy Takes 🔥
The ChatGPT itinerary chosen is IMO a very typical itinerary that tourists think they can do. They don't necessarily realize the distances and logistics that it entails. For those of us that know Paris its obvious you would change places around a bit to better organize your time or do it on multiple days. As you said it is doable, but just not in a very organized or logical way. One still needs to think it thru and not blindly follow ChatGPT, but it was a very good exercise (pun intended). Very informative Jay. This is a great video to demonstrate what not to do and how with a little bit of effort one can organize their itinerary oh so much better.
Jay, I loved this! Verifies that I definitely want a person...real, live...that can taste, touch, smell, etc and be conscious of time, distance and finances. Thanks.
Thanks!
So is your next video going to be your version of a perfect day in Paris?
I would ❤️ to see that video.
I should probably follow this up, shouldn't I? 😆
@@JaySwanson PLEASE : )
0:16 Just from this prompt, I know this is going to be an iconic video.
You filmed this brilliantly my man! Thoroughly enjoyed 🤸♂️
I'm gonna do this! I've been living in Paris for 5 weeks and have been so busy that I haven't had time to just enjoy being here.
It was fun to try for sure. I think the key is to remain open to exploring 😎
your slick trick disappearing behind the lamp post was cute, well done :D
😊 thank you
4,90 euros for a croissant???? Is it made with unicorn butter?
This was so good. I had a smile on the entire time. Kudos to you for actually having done most of the recommendations! I would have just said "hell nah"!
The AI is not the only one that gets distances wrong in Paris, every single major movie (including some French ones) do that...
It takes some years of experience to get the distances right in this city 😆
HEMA as an iconic boutique-ha! I will be buying your guide for an upcoming trip and nice to know I can get the updated version for free if it comes out before my visit. Nice coat BTW.
Some friends showed me a ChatGPT suggestion for Limoges. It suggested to taste the world-famous and delicious PORCELAIN!!
Loved the pigeon cameo! ChatGPT couldn’t have anticipated that, I don’t believe. ❤
Maybe ChatGPT gave the pigeon a complimentary cameo itinerary
As a professor who has suspected students have used ChatGPT; it does not produce the vetted, finished work people think it does so… no do not just follow AI without your own judgement, which you wonderfully illustrated! Lol!😂❤
Gotta keep that brain on 😆
The response from chatGPT will be only as good as one's prompt, like any good search prompt. Adding phrases like "high efficiency of time" or 'least walking distance", etc. may have made your experiment less frustrating and scattered. Remember the decades-old rule with computers, "garbage in, garbage out." Trying several prompts and screening for the best response would most likely be more useful. Loved this video, Jay! Great work!
Tell us the coffee is bad without telling us the coffee is bad.

Quote of the Day: “Robots know you need food to live, right?”
ChatGPT is a nightmare for me as an English teacher but I love this idea for a video!! So creative
Thanks! And I can imagine the essays you're getting
Great video! I’ve been trying to plan an itinerary for two days in Paris, keeping in mind days that museums are closed, and where things I want to see are located so it makes sense. I also don’t want to jam so much into the day it’s not enjoyable. Now to map things out. But I like planning ahead so I can make the most out of my trip. That restaurant where you had the wagu beef sandwich deserves a visit!
Putting up those hanging hearts on the boat was going all out with the props. It fit the video segment. 😅
@JaySwanson great video. From 14:40 to 14:54 you hit the mark on an areas where creative content creators like you can make dynamic impacts leveraging new technology. Looking forward to seeing what you can create.
Thanks!
Thanks Jay for always creating and posting great content. Your commentary and videos are enjoyable and informative. As I'm working...I'm planning my trip (hopefully soon) in head. Made me happy 😊
Great vlog as always!
Really great idea for a video Jay! also, can't wait for the 2023 guide as I'm finally making my second trip to Paris this summer😀
What a great idea for a video!! Thank you, Jay! curious how many times you've been to the Louvre? My daughter and I totally utilized your advice for the Louvre visit when we went last summer. I was SO grateful for your advice. So practical and real.
LOVED your "disappearing act" @ 4:04!
Glad someone caught it =D
Amazing video!!!! Thank you for this and all your videos. They are excellent!!! Hey could you help me understand how to approach Paris in the rain? I'm seeing rain in the forecast.
I am here for a week. Your videos are really helpful, but I wasn't expecting everything to be soooo insanely expensive...and I have a feeling that in some restaurants they overcharge too. My tip is to buy stuff from s/m and make your own baguette. Also using the bus lines is really the way to go, because you can see so much of this huge city without walking. And another tip: before your visit in the museums make sure they are open because there might be a strike.
For sure - thankfully the strike didn't keep me out of the Louvre but it definitely had its effect on the experience
Interesting vid. I've watched well over a dozen ChatGPT vids and feel one needs to differently phrase the question you did in order to have things in the same neighborhood. I've recently used ChatGPT regarding SEO to go back and change some of the text/titles of my vlogs that aren't getting the views some of the others do and find that there is some increase in the number of views. And I do agree about your postulation about both good and bad about working with and under AI. But for RUclips creators, I think the most urgent, immediate concern is the court case next week that could remove protections from RUclips (and most social media sites) when people get information from a video that they use and it causes injury, either to themselves and/or others. I think it could potentially destroy RUclips, although their political lobbyists might be able to work out some sort of compromise. In any case, I'm going to keep using ChatGPT for a while to learn more about the pluses and minuses. Thanks for this video!
Going to paris in November thanks for great content the future is innovative stuff !!
Awesome video!!!! Going to have to try that wagyu sandwich on my trip in April 🥪
Love your stuff! Can you do a video on how you make your videos? From concepts to outlines to gear and editing?
It's definitely on the list 🍻 Thank you!
Glad that those who bought the guide in 2022 are getting the update. Any chance of getting an update to the one I bought in January of 2020?🤦🏼♀️
Just to be clear, those who buy the 2022 guide in 2023 are getting the update - the 2022 version is what they're getting now. Don't want people coming this year to miss out on this year's improvements if I can get it out in time!
Appreciate your content. It’s great to see and hear about places not just a verbal recommendation. I think it has its place but for me I enjoy researching places before I travel and your videos have been great. Will be in Paris in 10 days, the beef wagyu looks great!
I hope you have a great time!
Man, we just had the same experience with Yakuza. It was a backup after some guy ignored us and we bumped into it. Delicious.
It was so good!
We are currently in Paris for our 1 year anniversary, and your videos have been very helpful (and entertaining)!
We’ve kinda had our eyes out for you 👀 lol. We also have a Boston terrier and love Cooper!
Just go somewhere and enjoy. Never check and eat whatever you like. But that is my recipe for all travel, there is something right at the corner, be that a snack, a sight or a person. It is up to you.
9:53 Haha excellent physical comedy.
Excellent video! Night time view from the top of the Eiffel Tower is pretty spectacular...
I’m so happy you had great time at Yakuza. O ok, wrong choice of words ---
great segue with the better help plug. 🙂Lets see if IA will make better psychologist in the future. I enjoy your work
The Ad Read was ✨S E A M L E S S✨
Great work as always Jay. I kept waiting for the pidgin to peck your camera and knock it into the Seine.
That would have made for an interesting cut 😆
Poor Jay 😔 what an exhausting itinerary! That sando place looked legit tho
All worth it for the sando
Great video! $5 croissants are unfortunately common in LA. Loved the pigeon photobombing your taping along the Seine!
He wasn't shy in the least
Great name for the sandwich shop !
Solid all around
Great vid Jay oooo Bonsoir forgot French golden rule start with Bonsoir or Bonjour i was thinking how tec has moved on and changed since your first Paris vids
Hi Jay! Would you think about having someone edit your captions? I watch with captions often because I’m sometimes in a noisy environment and in this video every time you say Marais, RUclips auto-captioned it as Murray. Not that any Deaf person watching this video would necessarily be confused, but it’s kind of crazy making to see that over and over when it’s such an easy fix. Thanks for listening, this video is great and you’re right, ChatGPT is a terrible travel planner.
Yeah! We're looking into a handful of accessibility issues - thanks for bringing this up. And we'll see about the AI tools, I feel like they're going to get massively better in a couple of years
Great video. I'm planning a trip to France in July (I know the worst time to go). Any recommendations or websites to learn basic French? Also what equipment do you use to film your videos? Thanks!
Should have some solid language recs soon, but Duolingo was always fun (if not always the most helpful). I film with a Sony camera - should probably update my gear list haha
Great video!
Thank you!
Brilliant video!
Glad you liked it!
You're hitting your stride Jay
Man I still love your vids they are excellent
If I want a guide to the perfect day in Paris I would just watch your videos. Got a lot of great ideas, places to see and eat plus how to organize them in a logical manner. None of this ChatGPT stuff for me! Keep up the good work.😊
Thanks, Vicki!
I find most boulangeries open at 06h30 so if you find one that serves coffee (not all, but many) and has seating/perching (again, not all, but some), you can have a beautiful croissant and a questionable espresso for 2 Euros as early as you wish!
@ Jay Swanson Hey Jay guess you will need to change the search to include for local Parisians. But i would love to come back to Paris and do a solo bike ride anywhere through Paris with you. Just to wander through various neighborhoods to see any/ all of Paris . The main thing would be it would have to be with you !
what is the song to your background music I really like it noticed in a couple different videos
That was interesting. As a former travel agent, I still don't think people understand the importance of SOMEONE HUMAN helping plan your trip. Understanding the fine nuances like distance, their client's needs, tastes and personality, etc. (I also have many artist friends who are really upset about AI art, but that's another issue). Go rest your feet now, Jay. 😆😉
Great idea! Im only 10 seconds in, but can tell this is gonna be an entertaining video.
Thank you!
Ugh… what a gloomy weather day..
I’ll have a sisters trip and be there next week..
Hopefully we get lucky and have better weather than what you are having there. 😅
I love your Paris’s videos. Got lots of tip for my upcoming trip. Thank you!
The weather here has been gorgeous lately! This coming wed/thurs are looking grim but other than that it's been sunny and mild - hopefully you'll get the same!
Interesting. When I put a similar question in Bing (or 'Sydney'), the list seems better tailored according to geography and which sites are the nearest to the previous item on the itinerary. It even tells you how to get between them.
That’s strange because Sidney IS ChatGPT under the hood, or so I thought. Interesting!
Bing's setup is much more advanced, I believe. I need to play with it next
Fun. Good video idea.
Is there a download for Avignon? Or Remy? South of France.. I’m going in June.. 😅😂😊❤
Not yet! I had plans for this year but hopefully in the future (sorry, I realize that doesn't help now 😆)
I just discovered ChatGPT last night and it is a hoot! Fun little/big day you had there!
All over the place haha
@@JaySwanson I saw you filming on Rue Saint Antoine for this video but you didn’t hear me call out. Come say hi sometime at Nysa :)
OMG I hear commercials on sattelite radio for Betterhelp and the music they play in the background reminds me of your vids. Coincidence? lol
🤣🤣 I'll take full inspo credit if it's being handed out
Where does this AI get its info? At 67 am tech savvy. So interested in these suggestions. Still enjoy talking with real people. Thx Jay for your insights 👏
I, literally, first heard about ChatGPT at a conference in January and now I can't seem to get away from it. I think this video highlights something that seems to sometimes get lost in conversations about AI tech. It's a wonderful tool that can help us accomplish a task, but we still need to be involved in how what it comes up with is used or presented. Without human direction any AI tech is about as useful as a hammer or car or a computer or a paintbrush without human direction. Machine Overlord jokes aside, we control our technology - not the other way around.
For now for sure. I think that NYT article I referenced raised a good point (linked in the blog post I put in the description), that the danger lies in a chat bot being able to convince someone of something dangerous and to act on it on its behalf. The bot itself would never be aware of the damage it was doing, it's a tool, like you said, but it could still lead to some dark places. Definitely a good conversation to be having more broadly I think
@@JaySwanson Couldn't agree more. And, again, when the tool goes to dark places, as tools are sometimes wont to do, then it's up to us as the humans who make and use the tool to correct it. We're always responsible even when the tool has a "mind" of its own.
Looking real snazzy 👌🏾
I haven't had any desire to see what Chat GPT has to say about anything ever since I heard what the French have done with the homophone "Chat GPT." Your video shows perfectly, though, the places that I wish to avoid on a short trip.
Conversely, the cumulative effect of your "20 in 20" videos has been to make me realize that a good travel strategy might be to make several short trips and just focus on a single arrondissement per trip. Like: "OK, I'm doing four days and three nights in the 13th," etc. That will give me focus and keep me away from the tourist traps.
I've sort of rediscovered your channel recently; finances have prevented me from re-upping my patreon membership, but I plan to do so soon. Sorry! Thanks!
Killer video idea! Always nice to see your tech/scifi world leak into the Paris content 👌🏻
Thanks!
Though overpriced, first-timers who want that incomparable wow-I'm-in-Paris delight, sitting outside sipping hot chocolate at Deux Magots will definitely deliver the feels. Such a fun content twist to do ChatGPT (though it gives me mild anxiety too)!
I think that anxiety is being felt pretty broadly atm - you're definitely not alone
We’re going in early May. Have you done a review on Normandy?
Hello, thanks for watching! See the links below for (albeit limited) content on Normandy:

Great video! I'd rather buy "Paris in my Pocket" than use an AI to take me around Paris. 😊Wondering if that Sando shop will make your guide? It looked delish!
It absolutely will. Just gotta update the doc we're working off and it'll be in! 🥪
Technically, it’s Aromantic because it defies the rules of romantic companionship but it’s kind of like Self-Love.
Thank you
Eh beh! That's a "chasing momuments" ChatGPT itinerary. I'm curious about that Japanese restaurant for lunch. When in Paris, I stay in the 2eme around Richelieu, so that looks like my neighborhood. I'll be back for a month this spring and have been noting the Asian places that I've walked past, but haven't yet tried. I enjoy your videos, and I've been going to Paris 1-2x/year since 2008 (except 2020-21 due to pandemic). I returned last May 2021.
Lots of great Asian cuisine up in the 2e, Rue Saint Anne makes it easy to find something to feed that craving
Gah! I’ve been meaning to make this video. Amazing execution!
Thanks!
Seems like this app/guide is really gaining traction. Makes me think of Rick Steves, leveraging video content into guide publication.
Oh Jay, you didn’t hear about the pigeons?
Great video. You should do another one giving GPT a bit more to work with such as the Perfect day in Paris in February for someone who loves food and rides a bike?
Hey! I am headed there with my in-laws and two kids. Would it be best I buy a 4 day train pass ahead of time or is it easy enough to buy it at a metro station once I am there?
It’s very easy to buy passes at the stations.
Jay recently released an updated video on getting around Paris - you can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/Qn4-ac0sPDQ/видео.html If you're looking for information on regional trains across France it's best to visit SNCF's website directly, though you can buy tickets at the big train stations it's usually cheaper ahead of time.
My birthday, December. Already walking 20k steps a day! Cabs and Uber? Nope. Not gonna gain!!
I would like to visit with the theme of art in the forefront. Do you have suggestions for such a trip. Not only viewing, but also visiting impressionism history sites, urban and plein air opportunities, art stores, and on a shoestring because........artist.
the romantic boat ride 🤣
Tres romantique 😆

Did you ever voice any of your books ?
I do indeed - Sea of the Unknown is available on Audible 📚
@@JaySwanson Great ! Love your voice.
How come I can't get the guide on Amazon Kindle?
It's loaded with images and at its price point, Kindle didn't make as much sense. Definitely something to consider though
Jay, this is completely out of topic, but can you please tell me the brand and model of your boots?
Haha, sure - they're Timberland 🥾
@@JaySwanson Thanks for replying. They are not the classic 6 inch waterproof nubuck tho. Do you remember the model name?
This really goes to show you that AI still has a long way to go. The fact that it recommended Les deux magots for... well... anything is proof positive of this fact. Don't get me wrong, I went to Les deux magots on my FIRST trip to Paris because of the history of the place. The AI is just taking the top spots of the city and running with it. Hardly "intelligent". LOL ;)
One of my Patrons did ask it for a non-touristy version and got some solid recs though. I think how you ask has a huge impact
