I’m currently listening to this podcast on my way to school and when nat mentioned how strict her parents were it reminded me of my parents when I had my first boyfriend. I feel like a lot of Hispanic parents don’t realize that their “little girls” are not so little anymore and they are growing up and it’s a hard reality that they have to accept which is why they are the way they are towards us. when we began the dating stage the funny thing is that after months of dating the parents begin to loosen up and become more open and accustomed to what’s actually happening and they end up not even caring what you do anymore

Everyones definition of authentic Mexican is different. you guys shouldn't focus on the negative. At the end of the day you should be confident and proud of your ROOTS, whatever that means to you. Its your life, everyone is legit just living in it.

She understands now why it was important to socialize and have some type of freedom. I feel like my mom was trying to protect me but also she was ruining my young years.

I am mixed and both hispanic and puerto rican, I grew up where I learned some Spanish, but not a lot, and I have been told that I may look like I'm hispanic, but i'll never be considered one to certain people because I am not fluent in speaking Spanish, and that I'm white washed n all that, BUT like sometimes I would let it get to me or something because even though I don't speak or hell even "act" like it, I constantly try to connect with my culture and it sucks when people say you'll never be like everyone else who's hispanic, Mexican, or even puerto rican

I feel you jake on a certain level, I’m Mexican I was born in Mexico but raised in Canada im grateful to be able to understand and speak Spanish but the thing I struggle with is just the fact that I was raised in a different country makes relatives see me differently, the way my cousins sometimes look at me because I can’t pronounce some words properly etc makes me kinda mad cause I don’t give them a judgemental look when they try to say something in English like it really be your own people/family judging you & the fact I never struggled the way my parents did when they lived in Mexico makes my relatives look at me 100x worse but like it’s not my fault. At the end of the day I’m Mexican it’s in my blood, just because my Spanish is bad & I didn’t have the same struggles as others doesn’t make me any less Mexican but some people don’t get that.

I always feel less than other Hispanics just because I don’t speak Spanish, but I love my culture.
Nat! I feel you.. I grew up with a strict military dad and I feel you 100% I left my parents house due to how strict he was and controlling and I was the one who had to deal with it the most! Like they were the hardest on me and I even stopped talking to them for two-three years. Because of how bad it was and I know sometimes they change for the other siblings and it made me so happy they changed for my other siblings but it still hurt that I had to be hurt for them to change for them and now I talk to them again but it is hard and I’m sorry you had to go through that!

I can relate to so much about when jake brought up the topic of not being able to speak spanish, but you grew up in that culture. I am mixed and both hispanic and puerto rican, I grew up where I learned some Spanish, but not a lot, and I have been told that I may look like I'm hispanic, but i'll never be considered one to certain people because I am not fluent in speaking Spanish, and that I'm white washed n all that, BUT like sometimes I would let it get to me or something because even though I don't speak or hell even "act" like it, I constantly try to connect with my culture and it sucks when people say you'll never be like everyone else who's hispanic, Mexican, or even puerto rican

I feel you jake on a certain level, I’m Mexican I was born in Mexico but raised in Canada im grateful to be able to understand and speak Spanish but the thing I struggle with is just the fact that I was raised in a different country makes relatives see me differently, the way my cousins sometimes look at me because I can’t pronounce some words properly etc makes me kinda mad cause I don’t give them a judgemental look when they try to say something in English like it really be your own people/family judging you & the fact I never struggled the way my parents did when they lived in Mexico makes my relatives look at me 100x worse but like it’s not my fault. At the end of the day I’m Mexican it’s in my blood, just because my Spanish is bad & I didn’t have the same struggles as others doesn’t make me any less Mexican but some people don’t get that.

i felt jake on the spanish speaking section. i grew up in a doninican household.. and my dad o my knee a little bit of english, but when i started to grow older, my parents didn’t teach me spanish because my dad knew English already. I always feel less than other Hispanics just because I don’t speak Spanish, but I love my culture.
Nat! I feel you.. I grew up with a strict military dad and I feel you 100% I left my parents house due to how strict he was and controlling and I was the one who had to deal with it the most! Like they were the hardest on me and I even stopped talking to them for two-three years. Because of how bad it was and I know sometimes they change for the other siblings and it made me so happy they changed for my other siblings but it still hurt that I had to be hurt for them to change for them and now I talk to them again but it is hard and I’m sorry you had to go through that!
