I think Daniel Ho described the difference best when he explained Mango resonates in the high frequencies and the lower frequencies that we feel even more then hear. Koa resonates in the mid range that our ears pick up most. That describes what I hear. To me Mango gives sparkle to the highs and depth to the lows. To me Koa does not have the sparkle on the high end or the depth on the low end of mango and it makes up for this with a very balanced tone.
    I personally prefer Mango.
Yet I own both because certain songs sound better one or the other.

I like them both, I like the Koa for strumming and the mango for picking. Oh dear!!! I guess I need one of each LOL!

Well, on my hi tech Motorola e5 phone,... They sound the same...
If I ever get to buy a high end ukulele, it will be a Koa Aloha. Beautiful ukuleles.
Till then, my little Chinese made Aklot will have to do.
Named it Ruby. Because of the firey red mahogany it's made of.

The Aklot ukes punch well above their cost! I started out on one, and I still play it at times. With the right strings they rival ukuleles costing 3 times more. That said, nothing beats a Hawaiian "K" brand, ever.

I could hear the difference more in the fingerpicking part. And I definitely heard the 'brightness" of the Koa wood, though in my head I said "sharper". Both are beautiful instruments that make beautiful sounds.

A friend of mine visited Hawaii and was told that if he bought the Koa wood and took it back to the U.S. mainland, the wood will split due to the fact that the weather stays basically the same in Hawaii, but the changing temperatures here will have an adverse affect on the wood. Sure enough, the back of his uke grew a large split. Isn't there a way to prevent this?

I own two Koa ukes and in the Midwest. Winter I make sure they are hydrated and kept around 50%humidity. No problems. .

I could here a slight difference, but very subtle, cant even tell you why, but I seemed to like the Mango better. Hope sometime when I have the money they come out with a baritone Mango

  • @Dadloveshazel

So I feel the mango sounded brighter but with the finger picking. I think the mango has a higher pitch but the sound from the Koa sounded a lot fuller to me. Like the Mango lacks in the mid range a little.

Koa has a deeper warm feeling , the mango is bright and cherry. Love both of them! Very nice 👍🏼

I just ordered a solid koa, because I felt I should have at least one of the classic traditional wood. That said, I see a Mango in my future. The Koa here sounded a bit richer, and the mango a bit brighter and projected more.

Have you compared Koa with Acacia. Here I can't tell the difference.

Always a fan of Mahogany I am so glad I’ve found Mango. The rich warm depth I’ve been looking for. Yet another wall hangar needed. Lol

I have gone back over these a number of times and I agree with Miriam, that the mango has a fuller sound and projects better than the koa. Being a fruit wood it is bound to be a harder wood but it seems to be in a class all its own tone wise. Thank you Terry for giving us the comparison . Well done!

My daughter bought a Baritone Mango UKE in Hawaii for her wedding gift to her self! (Haha) it’s so warm!(full?!?) Just as you described- and then I did hear as you played the higher treble in the KOA…great examples! Thank you! I need me a UKE!

The Koa for strumming and the Mango for picking, definitely the latter for me.🎸🎶❤️

It was so close it was hard to decide, but, I think I like the Mango just slightly better. I would be very happy with either one. LOL

Yes I think koa a little bit brighter. I like Mango looks slitly better.

The Koa almost sounds like the sound is sitting inside a little more. Mango just seems smoother and even as the sound projects. I vote mango.

Thank you very much for the comparison, Terry! Yes, I think that the Mango sound is warmer and, to my ears, much more "manageable" - specifically because of the midrange. That's just me.

Koa has huge bright treble but a deep mid. I love the mids on the koa but not of the brighter treble to that extent. Both are gorgeous instruments. Mango seems to be very even toned. The sound a bit brighter but it’s even all around.

It's personal preference, but I have never liked the sound of Koa. To me it sounds muddy. I have always liked the sound of Mango. I owned a KoAloha Mango KTM-00 for a while and it is a very nice sounding instrument.

I would play Jazz and Blues on the Koa and Pop or Hawaiian tunes on the Mango. Then again the blues might sound awesome as well on the Mango.

Totally agree with ya! To me, koa has a warm, mellow tone, but it's brighter & punchier compared to mango. I do love the look of the mango, though 😊 I wonder if there's a uke with the mango look with koa sound somewhere? 🤔
