...... with the caveats of: i already own a steam deck oled, so not TOO powerful (ayaneo pocket s / odin 2), but also android based with a 16:9 screen. i was very tempted by the RP4, but i wanted a snapdragon chip. the cheaper handhelds were also very tempting, and i did buy one for my niece (RG353PS). also 1080p for 1:1 local pc streaming
I had a retroid pocket 2 and ended up selling it because I didn't love the small screen. I love what I'm seeing with the 5, but a used steam deck is getting more affordable all the time too! Great video as always, keep up the good work!
You do truly excellent work here, Russ - best in the space as far as I’m concerned! Thanks for the time and effort - love your channel and can’t wait to get my RP5 when shipping starts later this month!
Thanks Ross - been considering the RP4 Pro based on your views of it being the best bang for the buck, especially considering its performance in PS2 emulation, which is what I normally do. But seeing this video, and hopefully your full, unvarnished thoughts shortly, is making me realize that the RP5 is probably a better bet for just a bit more.
I love the 16bit and GC color ways. I know the black is “clean” but it looks too much like an iPhone for my tastes. Game consoles should look fun, IMO!
You just made my Sunday. Thanks! I don't like how you have to bridge your thumbs over the sticks in order to get to the face buttons and dpad. They should have been offset a bit.
This video put me over the edge. Also I was leaning towards the black mode but the grey looks so gorgeous I feel it is worth the more noticeable black bars.
I ordered the 16bit. I have a first generation black vita and imo the blending effect isn't worth sacrificing a colourful device. I mean, it's okay, but I don't really want another boring black device. The 16 bit and gc colours are just too awesome :)
I have an RP4P but as soon as I saw the RP5 in the GC color, I had to have it. This impressions video makes me even more excited than I was previously. I may even purchase a black one to keep at work since it is more professional looking. Thanks Russ!
The RP5 seems like a perfectly balanced device in terms of price, performance and size. I also think it's cool that the RP5 has a bigger screen than the RP3/4 but the device itself is almost the same size. And overall design is also cool. I'll definitely get this one.
My one request is to show the sound of the bumpers. You mentioned it's not too loud but is a micro switch. Having quiet bumpers is one of the most important aspects for me, and I love when I can hear them in a review.
If I didn’t already have a Samsung Galaxy S20 FE with a similar chipset and screen I use for gaming then I would def be grabbing this RP 5. A lot to love for $220.
Right there with you. Between my phone and old hacked 3ds I'm not sure where these handhelds would fit in unless something really exciting came out. Neither of them are ideal (my phone is my phone, the 3ds's ugly TN screen) but knowing I _could_ use them limits how interested I'd be in actually buying one of these yet.
@ Yep. I got that S20 FE for $50 last year. Works good with the GameSirX2 and it was the last Galaxy to have a micro SD slot. I also have an Odin Lite and RGB30 so it’s hard for me to warrant spending more money though this RP 5 has me tempted haha. I use iPhone 15 Pro Max as my main phone and with Apple allowing emulators now that also is another reason I hesitate on getting another handheld. I might wait til next year when the RP 6 comes out and see where we are in the $200 range then.
this is the best time ever to be in this hobby and I love it so much. I already have 6 handhelds and I gotta keep convincing myself I dont need to buy everyone of them, I currently still play my Miyoo Mini every day out of the handhelds I own, still cant beat the portability and that beautiful tiny screen.
I really appreciate these videos. As much as i want to upgrade, I'm still really enjoying the 4 Pro so I think I'll hold off till the 6 personally. This looks amazing but I don't want to get into the yearly upgrade race.
Yeah I mean I can kinda understand if a person has "big hands" they might have trouble with the stick being that close to the Dpad but I honestly can't stand the Stick in the top position so this is ideal for me.
I don't need another one, I don't need another one, I don't need another one, I don't need another one, I don't need another one, I don't need another one, I don't need another one, I don't need another one, I don't need another one, I need another one
@@tabkg5802 Right that price is nuts, Android handhelds in my opinion are for portability over power. and the Odin 2 is the limit of size, anything bigger, running android is a waste imo.
Great breakdown as always. Once you've used the RP5 for a bit longer I'd love a comparison between the Odin 2 Mini, particularly on ergonomics. They seem to have pretty similar size and capabilities, so it'd be great to know if anything about the Odin Mini still justifies its higher pricetag.
Agreed, the main reason I will skip the RP5 is because the joysticks are directly underneath the D-pad and face buttons. You are constantly knocking into them. Fighting games will be a little harder to play. V shape controls should have been done, even if they had to make the device slightly longer. 🍻
@ I do not disagree with your logic, but hands are different sizes, so what works for you won't work for others. If you watch Russ, he has to play SF 3rd Strike with the very tip of his thumb. That is not super comfortable for long fighting game sessions. It's an honest take on a possible flaw in controls, Russ is right, it won't be a great fit for some. 🍻
You shouldn't judge, without having hands on experience. Vitas sticks are also direcly beneath the buttons, but it doesn't bother me at all and I never heard anybody complaining about this issue on the vita. Everyones playstyle and hands are different. Maybe it would bother you, but you will never know for sure.
@@Watamel0n fair enough, but before I spend money on a device, for me, I have to assess the possible pros and cons, as do you and most others. I know what I like for my controls, the chances are very high that RP5 will bother me a lot. But I agree that can't know 100% unless I try it. 🍻
Looks great. I have an OLED Steam Deck and an Analogue Pocket, both of which I love, but I've been wanting a sort of middle ground handheld that I can take on the go. Steam Deck is too big to lug around places and the Pocket is really fragile so I'm always afraid to bring it anywhere outside of the house. RP5 seems like it has the power, form factor, and portability that would make for a great on the go device.

...... with the caveats of: i already own a steam deck oled, so not TOO powerful (ayaneo pocket s / odin 2), but also android based with a 16:9 screen. i was very tempted by the RP4, but i wanted a snapdragon chip. the cheaper handhelds were also very tempting, and i did buy one for my niece (RG353PS). also 1080p for 1:1 local pc streaming
I had a retroid pocket 2 and ended up selling it because I didn't love the small screen. I love what I'm seeing with the 5, but a used steam deck is getting more affordable all the time too! Great video as always, keep up the good work!
Would love to see something similar to the amount of power in this in a clamshell eventually. Hopefully Retroid will revisit the form factor
clamshell? like the ds? ds emulator confirmed?
You do truly excellent work here, Russ - best in the space as far as I’m concerned! Thanks for the time and effort - love your channel and can’t wait to get my RP5 when shipping starts later this month!
17:28 Thanks for the measurement on 4:3 content! It’s nudging me toward the RP5 (4.5”) over the upcoming 406H (4”).
Which one did u end up getting?
Great review! Love your the Dismemberment Plan shirt, too
You just made my Sunday. Thanks!
I don't like how you have to bridge your thumbs over the sticks in order to get to the face buttons and dpad. They should have been offset a bit.
Wow. This looks amazing! Can't wait to get mine. 🎮
Great video man. I’m super excited for my RP five now. Thanks.
We need a loop video of the face button pressing comparison for some ASMR goodness.
I have an RP4P but as soon as I saw the RP5 in the GC color, I had to have it. This impressions video makes me even more excited than I was previously. I may even purchase a black one to keep at work since it is more professional looking.
Thanks Russ!
"gritty" "bumpy" the word you're looking for is "knurled" / "knurling", Russ - same pattern they use for dumbbells and barbells to improve grip
Time to finally put in an order on my first Retroid device, I think. Thanks for the informative video as always, Russ!
Been waiting for this ❤
The RP5 seems like a perfectly balanced device in terms of price, performance and size.
It's so loud it causes the games to delete saves and use 100% of the ram
Amazing device and review - you are so awesome at this btw!
Those attention to details is what makes a Retroid device so good. Watch and learn Aya Neo...
Retroid devices are so good because they're owned by the same people that make the Odin 2/Odin 2 mini
Thank you for measuring 4:3 screen output! That means so much to me!
I’m a die hard 4:3 guy so the mini is more of what I want but I really like the 5 as well. That screen looks really great.
I picked up the 5 mini for everything up to PS2/GC. If I need a device for something more then I'll grab the regular 5.
Gracias por esta gran review, como siempre de 10. Tenia la duda de coger la odin portal o esta RP5, y ya me la has resuelto! A por la retroid!!
Outside walking Russ is my new favorite Russ. Been waiting on this review. Thanks. Going to order as soon as I can decide on a color.
"A wild Russ appears!"
@@TheRealAlpha2 hahaha! Perfect!
Russ yet another fantastic review, very tempting xmas present to myself
Mine's S21. I have no problems with it other than its dismal battery life.
this is the best time ever to be in this hobby and I love it so much. I already have 6 handhelds and I gotta keep convincing myself I dont need to buy everyone of them, I currently still play my Miyoo Mini every day out of the handhelds I own, still cant beat the portability and that beautiful tiny screen.
I always love the shot of you turning off the camera after the intro
Someone called it an “ear tickle” and I can’t get it out of my head now 😂
just preordered it, my first retroid pocket since the first one - this looks like a winner!
Ok, yeah this handheld model looks really nice 😃

Wicked time
Our favorite Dutch youtuber!
Wicked in the building !
I personally prefer the RP5 console model
I really appreciate these videos. As much as i want to upgrade, I'm still really enjoying the 4 Pro so I think I'll hold off till the 6 personally. This looks amazing but I don't want to get into the yearly upgrade race.
I'm definitely going to get it because of the PlayStation controller thumb stick layout
Yeah I mean I can kinda understand if a person has "big hands" they might have trouble with the stick being that close to the Dpad but I honestly can't stand the Stick in the top position so this is ideal for me.
@@TheRealAlpha2 Yeah, Xbox/Nintendo's controller layout just looks stupid, PlayStation's looks nicer (symmetrical) and is more logical.
@Retro Game Corps looks good so far and thanks for giving an idea of what it can do with the other unnamed emulators!
I don't need another one, I don't need another one, I don't need another one,
I don't need another one, I don't need another one, I don't need another one,
I don't need another one, I don't need another one, I don't need another one,
I need another one
Great first impression!! Can’t wait to get mine!!!
Bezel-less... 😍😍😍
Take notes, other manufacturers. This is how it's done!
I was all set to order the RP mini, now I think it’s going to be the RP5 😮, looking forward to the review video Russ.
Odin Portal with the 7" OLED is gonna be even better. That screen already has amazing colors even from here.
Seems great too but the price is 💀💀💀
@@tabkg5802 Right that price is nuts, Android handhelds in my opinion are for portability over power. and the Odin 2 is the limit of size, anything bigger, running android is a waste imo.
Double the price for what exactly
Just get a steam deck at that point lmao
The portal screen even has 120 Hz. Goodbye bad input latency :D
Hah, i could watch these videos all day lol
great work, keep it up!
Your videos are always bangers man 😊
Great breakdown as always.
If you hold it right your fingers will not be over the sticks
Same. This is so close to perfect for me. I wish the rp5 had the layout and shell shape of the rg556, that’s the dream.
oh boyyy you just gave me the idea to switch the color temperature setting on my rg 556 to warm and it looks soo much better now. thank you :D
