    Sometimes makeup do expire, but a lot of people only read the 6m 12m shelf life and assume it’s expired after, that’s just there to protect the brands, doesn’t mean it expires after that time, it means that they can assure you it will be fine for at least that amount of time

    • @mediocrebankai
      @mediocrebankai 2 месяца назад +30

      Exactly. Even things like qtips or plastic pipettes in our lab oftentimes will have an expiry date just because one is required. Its something that covers their butts legally. Doesn’t mean a blush is automatically bad the day after the expiry.

    • @MrKonnoasami
      @MrKonnoasami 2 месяца назад +15

      yea it's a common misconception that the shelf life is the expiry date. The problem is they don't label the expiry date so you're left on your own to assume something has gone off. Funny enough Korean makeup and Chinese makeup (like all their products even eyeshadow palettes) legit have an expiry date written on the item. Even tells you the date and month on top of that! We need to adopt that for sure. Clearly they're aware of when things will go off.
      Anyways, my makeup expires when I say so LOL. Except my korean and chinese makeup I guess cause I can't avoid it and be delulu lol

      Expiration dates aren’t regulated. At all. The FDA requires companies to determine the expiration date. Which means that the numbers that companies put on their bottles will be the most advantageous to the company. Im a chemist and I can tell you that there are thousands of chemicals out there that will literally never change composition if kept away from heat and light. Most of those will be dry ingredients (think eyeshadows, blushes). I’m of the opinion, that if it doesn’t change in color, texture, smell or cause a reaction with my skin…it’s good to go.

      That might not apply for mascaras. I once had a mascara that was due to expire in 6 months and it caused major eye inflammation when it reached 3 months ( i bought it new). I must say if I have a mascara sitting open for more than 3 months either i use it with caution or i throw it away if it smells bad...

    the argument that makeup cannot be "underconsumption core" because it is a "luxury" is a bit odd to me. like yes, technically, none of us need it! but aspiring to some sort of pure practicality and frugality feels so Puritan... can't get behind it personally lol
    a lot of my makeup is definitely older than stated expiration dates, but that's part of why I keep very few cream/liquid products. powders tend to be so much more forgiving!

      I never thought of it that way. I am frugal and make practical purchases, but only because it allows me to keep my money. I started asking "if I lost my job, would I regret this purchase?" and my emergency savings built itself.

      It’s important to throw out expired liquid products because it can give you a fungal or bacterial infection especially if you apply it to, or it somehow gets into broken skin. Powders can be cleaned with 70% alcohol, but they can also accumulate bacteria or mold especially if they are kept in a humid environment like a bathroom, or if someone just lives in a humid region. I don’t believe people should sacrifice their health for an underconsumption core trend. Also, I throw out all of my makeup that I have been using when so get pink eye because it’s just so easy to get a reinfection.

    I am guilty of using items older than a year. I can usually tell when something is expired. The texture or smell will change and that’s my cue to toss. I have never used up an eyeshadow or nail polish but happy to say I use up foundations (I only have 2-3 at a time), concealers, powders, and blushes. So I’m focusing my no buy efforts on eyeshadow and anything I know I won’t use up.

    • @ellerchu
      @ellerchu  2 месяца назад +35

      Some products do last longer than a year, so I don't think its a big worry. I also draw the line once it starts to smell or change texture - especially with clean beauty!

    • @serafia_
      @serafia_ 2 месяца назад +16

      Nail polish is basically almost never too old. Some people even bring back old polishes from the 1900s! But even with them is the fact that often if something is actually wrong the polish will tell it to you.
      (So don't throw out your thick and/or clumpy polishes, just get nail polish thinner and they're like brand new ❤)

    • @TheLilyGraceLife
      @TheLilyGraceLife 2 месяца назад +9

      @serafia_ I've had the exact opposite where my nail products have expired really quickly. Eyeshadow palettes just don't die. I think I need to declutter some, though, as I'm running out of room, and I don't actually use any of my lower end eyeshadow products since I got the natasha denona glam palette. I may keep a few because I want to do videos with them or because I need them for shows or the odd fancy makeup day but there's a ton if really crappy neutral palettes I could get rid of.

    • @mediocrebankai

      Same, but I keep it all super clean and organized in a cool dry room. I tend to use eyeshadow and powder for years, powder products last longer. However if its an eyeliner, mascara, or lip gloss like a product where the entire tube gets contaminated by a wand? Those get tossed much quicker.

      Speaking on my behalf
      I store my makeup items in makeup bags and then into an old back pack
      To limit exposure from sunlight
      Wipe makeup packaging time to time
      Wash makeup brushes regularly
      ( Edit: I tend to go towards powder products as well)

      Something you can do is trying to wash your hands (especially if you use your hands to apply products). Very similar to keeping brushes clean. Though sometimes I think it’s not worth the time and effort to try and extend shelf life, especially with things like mascara, eyeliners, lipstick, and things of that nature.

    I really liked this trend at first but it quickly became hateful. It started with people having 1 of each type of product and encouraging thinking before you buy. It had a shift of people showing their 3 year old mascara and no Stanley cup saying they are better than you. I think moderate consumption is the way to go. We all have things we like that aren’t necessary but we shouldn’t be shamed for a hobby.

    i think the problem with saying we don't need makeup is it doesn't address the misogyny in our society that makes makeup a necessity. yes, theoretically we don't need makeup, but in day to day life there are things that people do or say that make us realize that we need to wear makeup. such as someone wearing makeup regularly, then not wearing it one day, and having multiple people ask if they're sick or if they didn't get much sleep. in terms of job interviews, internship interviews, etc. makeup is a necessity. it shouldn't be, but for women, part of looking fully put together and professional includes wearing makeup. it's why so many older women won't be seen without makeup on, and it's how the makeup industry is sustained. the misogynistic idea that women must wear makeup to look their prettiest or their best has been so deeply ingrained into our society that it's a normal, natural thought to have about ourselves or others. and there's absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying makeup and enjoying the beauty industry, i just think we need to talk more openly about the dangerous and disrespectful ideals the beauty industry stands on.

    • @jessicaharrison4719
      @jessicaharrison4719 2 месяца назад

      Makeup is an investment, because there is still an underlying assumption that if you don't do your makeup in a specific, society-approved way, you are not caring enough about the work or your fellow workers or the work environment. Wearing makeup (in that specific way) earns women higher tips, has women more likely to get and keep higher paying jobs, and just overall affects women's financial security.

      I think you make a very true and positive point about using cosmetics for the sake of temporarily enhancing your appearance for a particular NEED; in comparison to buying makeup to ENJOY it. The whole "unboxing" aspect to shopping is definitely OVERCONSUMPTION to me. So UNDERCONSUMPTION should be buying makeup even if the packaging isn't "worth it". 😂

Powders tho, I am guilty of using them long past the expiry date. I'm trying to use up the products I have and buy less so I can hit the pan on all my make up before it expires. I've been influenced into buying post of it 😭😭

  • @laur83
    @laur83 2 месяца назад +12

    tbh a lot of makeup will easily last over a year. depends on the preservative system and the environment where the makeup is used and kept. ie “clean” brands will generally expire faster, and having your makeup stored in a humid place or just living in a humid environment probably won’t help it to last longer. and we need to watch out for liquid and eye products especially when it comes to expiry. but it generally isn’t necessary to toss your products immediately at the 6, 12, 18 month etc mark if they still perform well. if they perform as they did when you first got them, haven’t changed in smell, consistency and appearance and don’t cause you any reactions, then it’s probably fine to keep using.

    I have a lot of products that are over 2 years old, some of the palettes, blushes, highlighters and lipsticks/liners are 5+ years old. My foundations are max 2 years old and they seem fine, so I continue to use them. I always use up certain categories, namely brow pencils, face powders, skin tints, liquid eyeliners and mascaras. But I can almost never finish blushes, highlights or eyeshadow palettes. i did somehow manage to actually finish a fenty highlighter but only because i was using it as an eyeshadow as well, which I do with the rare beauty highlighters as well.

    When I was a teenager my dad would buy me really nice expensive perfumes as gifts. He traveled a lot for work and would often buy a perfume in whatever country he was visiting. He typically bought me one per year, and since I didn't wear them daily, my perfume collection just kept on growing. I'm 28 now and I have 12 perfumes. My most recent perfume is from 2015. I have no idea how old my oldest one is, but I'm guessing it's from around 2007. I honestly have no idea what do to with them so I just keep them. They don't smell bad, but most of them are floral which is not my preference. They're also too old to sell (though I may be able to sell some of the discontinued ones to collectors).

    I think the point that most of these underconsumption videos are trying to make is that the goal should be to have only a few products, and to use each one up before you buy another, instead of having so many things that they expire before you can use them up. If you purchase that foundation (for example), the goal should be to use it until it can't be used anymore. I remember when most people who wore makeup only had two foundations, a summer and winter shade, now it seems like it is normal to have a whole bunch of options in various finishes. It only seems gross because with a larger collection it would take longer than the expiration date to finish a product, but the expiration date only tells you when the preservatives start to lose efficacy, not when the product is riddled with bacteria and dangerous as some seem to be implying. I guess my goal with makeup is 1) identify which products I use for everyday and use those whenever I do my makeup. 2) Use up what I have in those categories and do not repurchase my favorites until I do that. Using up can also be throwing out due to a change in smell or texture that leads me to believe that the product is no longer safe. 3) Only purchase what I need or will use. This may be more things than for most people since I perform onstage and often need more colors, but I don't need to buy everything that I like or that excites me. 4) Relearn viewing makeup as utilitarian. For a couple of years, it was my creative outlet, and I let myself purchase more than I needed. But my main outlet is performing, and that is available to me again. I don't have the time to keep up all of my hobbies right now, and purchasing makeup is not the hobby I want to have, using it is. I can't unsee the image of all of my unused products that go bad ending up in a landfill somewhere, multiplied by the number of people that, like me, starting overpurchasing because of consuming online content and using shopping as a coping mechanism during a stressful time. I can't go back and stop myself from buying what I have, but I can reduce the size of my hoard and not purchase anything I won't use going forward.

  • @ashenwalls3558
    @ashenwalls3558 2 месяца назад

    I literally just replaced a bunch of my makeup. My foundation, concealer, and eyeshadow were all around 4 years old. Sometimes I feel bad throwing stuff out that hasn't been used enough to see the pan, but at that point it's well due and it's nice to have something fresh. I do try to be mindful and pick palettes that fit my needs and have some crossover, so I can use eyeshadow in stead of buying a separate highlight product. So right now I think the oldest thing I have is a tinted moisturizer that's a little over a year old.

    I agree with you to a certain extend. One thing I don't agree with is luxury means it's not underconsumption. If someone buys one eyeshadow palette, one bronzer, one lipgloss, etc, but make it luxurious... It's technically not underconsumption cause the whole thing is not named properly. It's normal consumption and I'll all for it. They buy the amount they need and use it up? Wonderful, nothing goes to waste: product or money. Then they can buy another one. They are happy, the environment suffers less. A win (not for the companies cause they thrive on overconsumption 😂😂😂).

    as much as i appreciate underconsumption being the trend now, i hate that in a few weeks something else will take its place. i've been on an underconsumption journey since last year because it was actually necessary. i saw the amount of money i was wasting on things i didn't actually like nor need. i was so overwhelmed with the amount of of options i had, makeup became something very stressful.

    Well done. This trend seems to cause a lot of people to get so angry! I really like your take :) The assessment of minimalism influencing us millennials to get rid of [too much] stuff was spot on. I ventured into project panning after that and never looked back, so underconsumption core makes much more sense for people like me who over consumed at various points and need a mental break from being marketed to all the time.

So therefore there's a way to have a makeup bag/collection or anything and do it more efficiently or thoughtfully

    Ok unpopular opinion here : minimalism and owing less are not the same thing. How? If becoming minimalist requires a person to throw away things ( most clothes end in landfills and not thrift stores) , then it is not owing less, it is wasting resources unnecessarily. Underconsumption might be one of the solutions but i must say I hate when they name it a trend and not a tool. Also, while I love decluttering, I think keep spares of appliances, tools, cosmetics - instead of giving them away- is saving money and resources should these objects break down.

    • @ellerchu
      @ellerchu  2 месяца назад +1

      Well two things can be true; minimalism is owning less which then can turn into wasting resources.
      But that is why the unconsumption core is more appealing to “normal” people bc its not about giving things up but keeping things and making the most out of it (so you don't keep buying more).

    I thnk consumption in capitalism is subjective. When talking about vanity, you only need a foundation, powder, a lipstick, one eye palette that can be used as blush and hightlighter and eyeliner, a mascara. But If I want a pink, orange, neutral, etc, colors of each, that's nothing wrong if it. What's unnecessary is having a thousand of the same thing and not even touching it, not even opening, while you could repurpose it giving the unopened to someone.(Don't donate open used makeup to strangers, no need to go further). The thing is that no matter what, most products you won't be able to used before expiration. Some can be used for longer some are just ew😅. Brands should make smaller amounts for less prices.

    Personally, I love the underconsumption trend! Bring back consuming things at non-obsessive levels :D Hopefully it’ll mean that these brands start reasonably pricing their products instead! Ever since buying stuff obsessively became a trend prices skyrocketed and have not come down... So Sorry influencers but wages for regular folk are not increasing and yet prices for makeup and things people like to indulge in once in a while are increasingly becoming unattainable and that is causing an exclusivity problem! We need to bring down these companies several pegs or else they will continue to price things ridiculously for no reason other than greed, while at the same time draining our one and only earth from its alarmingly depleting resources!

      Theres plenty of budget brands and enough sales on the higher end brands that makeup companies as a whole won’t lower prices overall, or care if makeup junkies stop buying (because the average person is already “under consuming” when it comes to makeup), because they make crazy profits anyway esp with their costs of production. People who also buy budget makeup are not the average mid-higher end range products target customer, so they don’t necessarily care if their products are unattainable. If anything it helps their branding more, because then their stuff seems luxe and wealth-coded (which their target market absolutely loves).
      Makeup companies are also 1 step ahead by formulating trends and concepts that they get people to spend money in. It’s not a coincidence blush and skincare products have been rising while eyeshadow is falling and every brand has released multiple collections of the former. When those trends die out they will create new ones that get people to spend. The only real factor that gets people to consume less is recessions and those don’t last forever
