Life Inside a Medieval Castle (Cross Section)

  • Medieval Castles needed to be multiple things at once. They needed to be reflections of the leaders they represented - large and stately, suitable for housing the most important people in the world and surrounding them with luxury. But they also needed battlegrounds and strong fortifications that strengthened the defences of a town or city - therefore deterring invasion. The focal point of the towns and cities they defended, the Medieval Castle needed to not only house and support the land it owned, but stand as a signature and representation of the wealth of the crown and its nobles. Sending the message to invaders: 'You will not win here.'

    The castles that you have showed you can also see in Balkan peninsula as well, believe it or not. The rumor says that there is one Medieval Caste in Serbia. The location of that castle is near Novi Sad, Serbia.
    Besides the castles that were built near sea, and lakes, some of them were built on rivers as well. What I'm about to say is that some fortresses were also built as well. They were built near river Danube. The fortress that were built on river Danube are Kalemegdan in Belgrade, and Petrovaradin in Novi Sad. Petrovaradin fortresses has white clock. The big pointer shows hours, while smaller one shows minutes. They called that clock a drunken clock. And these pointer helped sailors when sailing across river Danube to see what time is it. Although one thing I might add is, that Petrovaradin fortress was built in 1692, by one French architect.
    Believe it or not, King Richard The Lion Heart was healing his wounds or illness in sanatorium in Balkan peninsula during the crusades. That sanatorium is near city of Novi Sad, and there is a commemorative plate there.

    Interesting and very fascinating. I did not know that Wales had so many. Life in those castles, even for the lords and nobility, was not nearly as comfortable as our lives today. They had little knowledge of hygiene, germs, contagions, infections, healthy diets, et al. And so many of them were illiterate. Medieval life in a castle seems so romantic to us, but few of us would trade our modern lives to go back and live in those times.

So many of its roads are still in use today. Here in the US it's so boring there is nothing really anything exciting historically wise here. 0:30 For a fact: For people in the medieval ages, there was no real difference between castles and cities. That's why many german cities have the ending "-burg" (castle), like Regensburg, and why people back then sometimes called their city-gates "Burgtore" f.e. It's also where the german word Bürger (citizen) derived from (Burgherr; eng.: castle lord/inhabitant).

    • @ashleytaylor7621
      @ashleytaylor7621 13 дней назад

      do you know why this was? you haven't explained the fact that when a castle was being built you would have camp followers that needed to build houses do continuously work on the castle and create a tiny village in order to create the castle or motte an bailey for instance the motte and bailey even though simple history doesn't understand what a motte and bailey is ( a trench and a hill) the village is what is created first then they dug out the motte and then with that dirt they built the bailey and then when that was done they then started to make the keep and the fortifications that's why its called burg in German. you are very welcome for doing your job for you.

    In this video, you mention how hygiene was important to control diseases. Very true, but during the middle ages, people were unaware of the connection between hygiene and disease.

      @@ashleytaylor7621 Taken from Wikipedia: "Basic forms of germ theory were proposed by Girolamo Fracastoro in 1546, and expanded upon by Marcus von Plenciz in 1762. However, such views were held in disdain in Europe, where Galen's miasma theory remained dominant among scientists and doctors"

    Are there any battles in keep (last defender) that successfuly won by deffenders? Any known battles?

      it depends on whether its a castle or a motte and bailey, if it was a motte and bailey no, if it was a castle no..... they would just give up there may be a couple cases in a castle siege that the defenders held out for so long that reinforcements arrive maybe but generally if the attackers have got to the keep you are fucked because all of your food all of your arrows everything you need to survive a siege is outside soooo if the attackers are smart all they have to do is wait a week and you will be so dehydrated and hungry you will just have no fight to carry on so no obviusly in history theres always cases that show the 1 in a million but if you have the entire fort you can then start re building everything that was destroyed and wait out the last defenders what would be the point in wasting men in trying to take a handful of dead men and lords or ladies?? i would also like to point out that hand to hand combat inside a keep was hardly ever done because its so hard to defend a keep you need to defend the stairs problem with that unlike a rampart the attackers have a clear shot at your feet and you cant defend your feet so if youre an attacker its literally like shooting fish in a barrel.

      short version: if you had been chained to a wall and been starved but at any time you can just say stop and it all stops you just have to pay for them to give you everything back, why when the guard asks if you want this to stop, would you spit in his face?
