    I got 2500 litre pond and I put a 300W aquarium heater in and I’m amazed at the results, I’m getting 15 at the lowest and 17 most of the time, In the bitter cold the fish are as active as ever and always wanting food, If you want your fish to keep active during the cooler months and be able to treat for flashing safely an aquarium heater in the centre maybe the way to go, Hardly notice the electricity cost either

      Hi yea I have heard those work quite well not sure on running costs it’s difficult to justify with these big utility bills
      Hopefully next winter I can get something in place thanks for the comment all the best Mike 👍🏼👍🏼

    Hi did u have a problem putting in a bottom drain with spin drifter.

    • @jiffsterkoi
      @jiffsterkoi  2 года назад +2

      Hi Kevin that particular drain is not a spin drifter just a retro with a air line coiled over it but I must say it made a huge difference compared to just sitting a pump on the bottom
      All the best Mike 👍🏼

    Hi what pump are you using and is it cheap on running cost great pond by the way

    • @jiffsterkoi
      @jiffsterkoi  2 года назад +2

      Hi Barry I am using a 20000 vari pump so you can tweak it too what suits your pond then , you really only need to turn your pond over max once per hour 👍🏼👍🏼

    Good update mate 👍 the bottom drain will do a good job for u but like i said it has a big job as your pond is fairly big. Maybe the airstones u took out cud be placed in the pond sides/corners n the air current will help to force muck into the bottom drain for u. Hoovered my pond today as my pre winter routine n i barely got anything from the floor but did it just incase there was sedament/koi teeth etc laying about. Ps its advised to still use air in winter but u can use less. Keep us updated 👍🐟😊

      Hi ric mate thank you it seems to work better with the air on early days but it looks good so far I could reposition the other air stones.you run air all winter? Cheers mate will keep you updated

      @@jiffsterkoi yeah air all year coz iv got a nexus 220 n a portable botton drain. The air on the bottom drain creates a current to help your bottom drain suck up the muck. So yeah i just leave mine on on a timer off for one hour on for two hours 👍

    Hope the bottom drain is performing well, they are a good addition to have.Really pleased with mine, I dont have air on all the time now the temp is dropping, If you use polycarb sheets you may need to span pond in timber over that distance or I suspect they will sag especially if water or snow builds up on them.

    • @jiffsterkoi
      @jiffsterkoi  3 года назад

      Hi martyn all good so far happy with it, yea I don’t usually use air in the winter may knock it off next month
      Polly carb does look quite flimsy like you say I will need to build a wooden frame for support 👍🏼

      @@jiffsterkoi I framed mine and put hinges on so I could open it up if its a nice day. Mine is only twin ply which does the job. You can get thicker stuff but its more for wind chill and to stop debris really for me.

    Like you I have lilies and other plants in my pond, so have never added salt to the pond. I take my fish out and give them a salt bath individually, this allows you to keep a closer eye on how the fish is reacting. A 3m x 2m sheet of polycarbonate going to be heavy and unwieldy, wouldn’t you be better off with 1m wide sheets. Stay safe and well.

    • @jiffsterkoi
      @jiffsterkoi  3 года назад

      Hi Steve yes salt is a consideration your right about the polycarbonate haven’t ordered it as yet pretty expensive for what it is

      @Technologyadvisor1 2 года назад

      @@jiffsterkoi what did you upgrade too. James the koi whisperer did a video on this bottom drain a year ago and said the fish could hurt themselves on the top of it. So he went back to a pump. I have seen some videos that show you can adapt the bottom drain top with a curved 45 degree pipe whats your take on that?

    • @jiffsterkoi
      @jiffsterkoi  2 года назад

      , fish can knock on anything you have in the water
      I have never had a issue I keep rocks on the shelf in mine to make it feel natural.
      I upgraded to PVC pressure pipe with a short piece of pressure hose to the drain ( it is in my upgrading pipe videos)I don’t think the fish are that dull if they want to avoid something they will .
      Ultimately the less in the pond for them to hit the better I guess but I have never had a issue personally

    • @jiffsterkoi
      @jiffsterkoi  2 года назад

      I got to be honest I just had the pump sitting on the pond floor before fitting this
      It definitely made a difference in my pond but I do have a 20000 pump on full bore you will still occasionally need to sweep the floor with a soft brush . I have a underwater video on the channel with it running .
      You won’t beat a proper under ground 4 inch but retro drains are second best I would say 👍🏼

  • @ampthetex

    I thought you would have gone gravity fed, and not pump fed., to save all the larger particles getting mushed up by the impeller?

    • @jiffsterkoi
      @jiffsterkoi  2 года назад +1

      Hi Steven , when I fitted the retro I couldn’t go gravity without drilling a hole in the wall below pond level for gravity to work .
      I know gravity has its advantages but had always been pump in pond for years . The drain gave a big improvement 👍🏼

    Hi, does the retrofit bottom drain decrease the water flow?

    • @jiffsterkoi
      @jiffsterkoi  3 года назад +1

      Hi I have not noticed anything the flow when filling my filter tubs is as fast as it has ever been
      If anything since I have started upgrading to pressure pipe it seams better
      I do have a 18000 litre per hour pump on mine
      Hope that helps 👍🏼
