Guys, I think a great investment for the channel would be a slo mo video camera to capture the swing and especially the impact moment for better educational content. Just a suggestion from a subscriber. Keep up the great work!
This video was by far the best explanation of how the shaft influences delivery. I'll admit I was very skeptical especially given the huge discrepancy until the awhaw moment where Ian talked about how soft makes you want to keep your hands ahead because of how it feels. I've had that experience with a rental driver but that never dawned on me.
I’ve been playing the La Golf AXS red graphites in my irons for a while now. The comments at the end fit why I chose them. I actually needed a slightly higher ball flight but steeper decent angle and the stiffness of the graphite axs red got me the ball flight I wanted while still leaving the tip a bit softer to allow for the feel to still promote a hands-forward swing. The profiles you can get from graphite are more flexible and customizable, IMO. I am a fan.
Just goes to show you need to be custom fit properly, meaning you need to go an outfit with hundreds of shafts not just 3 or 4. I did this last year and have dropped from a 5 to 1 handicap. This channel inspired me to do this.
I was thinking after seeing both shots that something needs to blend them both together because, although PX wasn’t optimized, it was consistent. Would love a follow up video if weight is added and how that changes the LA shaft to be as consistent as PX. Good video!
Drew is a beast. For those individual with his kind of "speed" yes the word "normal" has no place. That said, those two shafts each do serve a purpose. Should Drew even need to get such height in-order to have the desert angle so that it does "stop-on-a-dime" due to the balls angle of decent on very, very fast green...then he know what needs to be done. PGA Pro have to deals with such green on par 4's when hey are coming in from 215-225 yards and they need the ball to drop as if was a wedge coming in. It is vital to keep that in mind.

@@trashawnbritt4681 even if you just get a basic 7 iron fit and go from there you will be fine. I went to golftec, it was okay…been playing a year now and I shoot 85-90 from the tips. I do want to get a thorough fitting tho for every club

Driver: Callaway Rogue tripe Diamond/ Accra TZ RPG 472 M5+ and it goes far
I get the same results when it comes to driver shafts. The “higher launch” shafts tend to launch lower for me and produce lower dynamic loft than the “low launch” shafts. I play Ventus Black 6x tipped .5” because it’s the only shaft that I time well and consistently strike. With the Ventus Blk my average peak height is 112; with Graphite Design IZ I can barely get to 80 feet peak height.
The problem is no where stocks a variety of graphite iron shafts for you to try (UK). I play Project X LZ 5.5 hard stepped but I still launch the ball high, this shaft was the most consistent for me. I hit a lot of balls a suffer with joint pain, if I was to re-shaft a 6 or 7 iron, what graphite shafts should I try ? I would like to ideally bring the ball flight down.
Interesting and listening to Drew, it was key that he knows exactly what is going to happen when he uses steel vs graphic. Lead me to a couple of quick questions. What would have been the results or should I say delta's, if Ian would have hit some balls. Would the launch angle and spin been that radically between the shafts. I suspect some differences but, not as big as Drew's. Which poses the summary thought of mine; Is steel or graphic better. I suspect depends on the player.
I still have Modus in my irons but have been experimenting with graphite in wedges first. Steelfiber i95cw in two of them and Recoil 110 in the other one. I like the feel of the Recoil much better.
He was hitting the PX LS very solid and straight. Delofting his irons several more degrees would be an option with the PX LS. I'm guessing that's why Bryson plays such strong lofts. The problem with that is getting irons that are 4-5 degrees strong with correct CG and sole grind. Very interesting. Edit. Just got to the part where he talks about Bryson's lofts.
Great video on the comparison. Do you think this would apply across the board for other golfers? My irons spin a lot as well. My 6 iron gets into low 140 ball speed as well and literally will go 130+ feet in the air and would love to lower spin and height on all my irons as well!

Another great video exploring the properly technical stuff others daren’t touch 😉 I have to say, though that - as Drew admitted towards the end - he hit the PX so much better and straighter than the graphite so perhaps there’s scope to further improve the graphite set-up? Personally, I’d love to be able to hit a 6 iron 200 yards and have the ball touch the stratosphere on the way.
Interesting outcome. Steel seems more consistent I have to say. Small sample size though. Also 64 degree lie on a 6 iron, quite upright traditionally, but I admit more upright feels better and I wasted a lot of time trying to stay flatter through impact.
As others have said the steel was a better shaft. Seems the head is the problem. He needs a less lofted head but with the same bounce and shape of a standard head. I would think 2 degrees. Bending the hosel doesn't fix it. Even though you're a big fitting company you're still limited by what the major manufacturers are willing to offer. I don't think you guys got this right but it's still interesting and great to watch. This is why club fitting is still a fair way off being 100%.
Did you go through a club builder to have the shafts replaced? The only thing I’m confused/caught up on at this point is getting the total weight of each club normalized
I switched to graphite for injury reasons and will never go back also used to hit my steel shafts very high and now my trajectory is so much more useable.
Funny how Ian mentioned the Ping findings on better players and softer shafts.... it's similar to what you will sometimes here with Driver face control... For right handers with a right miss, some people will tell you to address the ball (or adjust the hosel) with an open face, as opposed to a closed face, because the brain and body will intuitively act to help shut it even more... In this case the softer shaft helps the player by them "feeling" it's loading too much, and holding onto it that little bit longer to influence dynamics... WILD
Just got my hands on a used set of Mizuno irons with the LAGP L Series shafts and they are phenomenal! I am now looking at purchasing two more sets of shafts to replace the KBS and DGs in my Srixon ZX7s and Wilson CBs. Can't ever have enough clubs, right?
I went from DGx7 to MM125TX. The only steel I’d ever entertain in the near future would be back in the wedges. T100 heads of anyone cares. 124 driver SS. My 6 iron is 100 give or take
Is there anything else available comparable to these LA golf shafts? Would the MMT125TX shafts provide similar lowering of dynamic loft and spin for someone like Drew? I also struggle with balloning balls on full swings with irons, so this shows I should maybe go towards graphite.
The MMT 125 tx plays almost identical to a PX 6.5. I didn’t find them to reduce spin much at all over the stiffer steel profiles. They are smoother, but didn’t alter launch angle much for me either. I play PX LS 6.5 now and they brought down all launch angles like 1-1.5 degrees I will be trying the LAGP , at least one shaft in 6i to try
I had elbow issues 3 years ago so went to Aerotech i110 and eventually FC115 shafts. Elbow started feeling better so when I ordered my newest set of irons I ordered them with PXLZ shafts which is what I was in before. Nope. Can't go back.

ive been fitted twice into graphite shafts since 2019 but unfortunately refused to wait the 3-4 months on those particular shafts. silly move considering it was night and day difference for me personally in favour of the graphite
Cool video but not sure about this one. No need to swing a 6i 105-108 mph and 95% of players (amateurs of course) can’t anyway. I understand to launch and spin was higher with the steel. But his dispersion was better with the steel (in this video at least).
I would’ve like to see some off speed shots and see how the graphite shafts compare to steel… not as good I suspect. We all know scratch golfers don’t hit 100% all out shots with every club and graphite has a tendency to really perform differently with partial speed shots from my experience.
Not anywhere near Drew's speed, but am also looking to try graphite in my new irons. Have to do some testing to see about MMT or recoil or whatever else I guess....

Regular steel vs Stiff graphite shafts. Is their stiffness pretty much the same? I'm a newbie to the sport, just a little over two months. With regards to shafts, I currently have irons with Steel Regular flex shafts. Although the label on the shafts say S FLEX so not sure if I'm really swinging a Regular flex. But anyway, I'm thinking of changing to lighter Graphite shafts because of my slow swing speed and a bit of hand & shoulder pain, but I'm not sure what Flex would suit me better - Regular or Stiff? I'm thinking since graphite is a softer shaft already than steel, maybe Regular would be too soft or whippy so I'm leaning towards Stiff for a graphite shaft. I do have Stiff shafts for my driver & 3wood which I'm fine with. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance
Can someone explain to me how as Ian put it at 10:32 that the steel shaft does “the same thing dynamically every time” isn’t the winner here? While Drew’s graphite shaft is causing a horrible pull hook? Then he chuckles in disgust as his steel shaft strikes go down the middle albeit 10-15y shorter. What am I missing here?
His launch and spin are dramatically higher with the steel. He may be better off with steel its debatable but He hates that floaty high spin shot. He mentions it at least 11x a video lol.
Two things, 1. It’s never the distance that matters. It’s the height and spin. A 150 foot peak height with 7k+ spin is unplayable in anything but perfect conditions. 2. It was VERY difficult for me to switch back and forth between the two clubs. The more I hit the steal, the more challenging it got to hit my normal club.

@@get2steve oh no I don’t take any of this poorly. The shot tracer on film didn’t do the ball flight justice at all. In person the steel was so high it’s laughable. It didn’t come across as well on screen as it did in person
Learned quite a bit, thanks. My swing improvements and knowledge has increased tremendously, so my next fitting I’ll be prepared and not let the fitter have his way. Plus I’ll be sure to get all of my fitting numbers and take them with me.
What a talent for sure, does he play pro golf. I swing it much slower than Drew and have made a living from golf for more than 40 years. Golf is more than swing speed.
Question is, is this gonna be as available as an X100 for example any time soon? Without it breaking the bank? This is eye opening for me, I play X7’s and still struggle to keep flight down some days.
The difference between the shafts is ball flight (launch angle and peak height), not distance. The steel shaft would be almost unplayable for Drew in windy conditions (or he’d have to get very creative with knock down shots)
Because Drew generates so much speed that the extra 1000-1500rpm of spin create havoc when there is wind present. I swing my 6i 101-102mph and I can feel his pain even with my shower speed. No need for the ball to apex at 140’ if there is plenty of decent angle with 110-120’ apex Wind has a huge effect on a ball with extra spin
The problem with most watching is the price. None of us can afford to change shafts in our clubs. Hell, we can't even afford good clubs period, much less ones with custom shafts! My clubs were bought in 1998 with steel shafts, and besides the recent grip change, are just like they were factory fresh. I wish companies made clubs at a more reasonable price so more people could afford to buy clubs. It is absolutely ridiculous to spend 1500 bucks on a full set of used clubs, just to be able to play.
I've extended my clubs another inch so I'm 1.5 over standard, I was thinking I need to get graphite shafts maybe 20 grams less than my 120s to compensate for the heavier swing weight of D5.5 that im at now. thoughts?
Shaft weight does not necessarily relate directly to swingweight. Swingweight is dictated by the balance point of the shafts. I have a set with 95g Fujikura Pro Iron shafts in Tour S that swingweight higher than another set with 130g Modus 125 X flex.
why do i swing my 6 iorn 103 and my driver 120....124 legit swinging out of my shoes, stock is 118.... i am not fit for my irons or driver, but my numbers are near where they need to be when i dial back driver is at 2800 6 iron is at 6000. something is off
I did too, until I saw it in person. That’s why when we were indoors I turned our screens off so Drew couldn’t see the result. I was shocked to see such a difference.

I am sure there are still things to be learned by the high swing speed players, maybe I am alone in relating more to Mike's speed. As such I don't watch a 152 SS player video and feel like there is something in it for me as far as equipment guidance/ purchase. I do understand many might feel differently.
Where can I get these shafts? My swing speed is up there. 137-140 mph with my drive. 200mph balls speed on GcQuad, same for Flight scope. My iron swing speed is crazy too and I balloon the ball.

Love your channel and have learned a lot. But best demo guy is Mike: right handed and driver SS 100-105, matches your most common demographic. The semi-pros who are left handed or who have driver SS of 120+ seem like irrelevant testers of equipment for the average "Joe". Why do you often present guys like Drew and the others with SS > 115 to 120. I assume many are like me and like more relatable testers?
He really doesn’t, remember this is a sample size of about 8 shots we’re showing. He’s had months of playing golf with each and he MUCH prefers the graphite. At his speed you can’t add as much dynamic loft as he does and still control your ball.

Love watching Drew swing. I certainly will never go back to steel after switching to MMT 105TX. My club speed is only 92 though with a 6.

I switched out my KBS taper steel shafts for UST Mamiya recoil graphite...no looking back and about to re-shaft my wedges.

Would hard-stepping the steel shafts help get him in a lower window? It looks like his strikes were better with steel than graphite.

All i got to say is, he was very accurate and consistent with the steel shaft. Maybe he should try to tweak the shaft or the head.

Agree with Drew. Switched to MMT125TX under Ian’s recommendation on a TXG livestream Q&A. Never going back to steel.

@@TheVsa17 Yep. Mike at TXG built them up for me. They swingweight a bit heavier than expected but that's just the nature of the MMT's.
122mph clubhead speed with a 6 iron lol.....I can't even get anywhere near that with a driver never mind a 6 iron

Cool video but not sure about this one. No need to swing a 6i 105-108 mph and 95% of players (amateurs of course) can’t anyway. I understand to launch and spin was higher with the steel. But his dispersion was better with the steel (in this video at least).

I would’ve like to see some off speed shots and see how the graphite shafts compare to steel… not as good I suspect. We all know scratch golfers don’t hit 100% all out shots with every club and graphite has a tendency to really perform differently with partial speed shots from my experience.
Any plans to test & review the Dynamic Gold Mid X100 Tour Issue Shafts?
Not anywhere near Drew's speed, but am also looking to try graphite in my new irons. Have to do some testing to see about MMT or recoil or whatever else I guess....

Funny though Drew was more consistent and the shot tracker was dead straight every time. Looks like something in the middle of both of these would be perfect.
Regular steel vs Stiff graphite shafts. Is their stiffness pretty much the same? I'm a newbie to the sport, just a little over two months. With regards to shafts, I currently have irons with Steel Regular flex shafts. Although the label on the shafts say S FLEX so not sure if I'm really swinging a Regular flex. But anyway, I'm thinking of changing to lighter Graphite shafts because of my slow swing speed and a bit of hand & shoulder pain, but I'm not sure what Flex would suit me better - Regular or Stiff? I'm thinking since graphite is a softer shaft already than steel, maybe Regular would be too soft or whippy so I'm leaning towards Stiff for a graphite shaft. I do have Stiff shafts for my driver & 3wood which I'm fine with. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance
Can someone explain to me how as Ian put it at 10:32 that the steel shaft does “the same thing dynamically every time” isn’t the winner here? While Drew’s graphite shaft is causing a horrible pull hook? Then he chuckles in disgust as his steel shaft strikes go down the middle albeit 10-15y shorter.
What am I missing here?
His launch and spin are dramatically higher with the steel. He may be better off with steel its debatable but He hates that floaty high spin shot. He mentions it at least 11x a video lol.
Two things,
1. It’s never the distance that matters. It’s the height and spin. A 150 foot peak height with 7k+ spin is unplayable in anything but perfect conditions.
2. It was VERY difficult for me to switch back and forth between the two clubs. The more I hit the steal, the more challenging it got to hit my normal club.

@@get2steve oh no I don’t take any of this poorly. The shot tracer on film didn’t do the ball flight justice at all. In person the steel was so high it’s laughable. It didn’t come across as well on screen as it did in person
Learned quite a bit, thanks. My swing improvements and knowledge has increased tremendously, so my next fitting I’ll be prepared and not let the fitter have his way. Plus I’ll be sure to get all of my fitting numbers and take them with me.

What a talent for sure, does he play pro golf. I swing it much slower than Drew and have made a living from golf for more than 40 years. Golf is more than swing speed.
I have 95 club speed with 6 and hit it really high. Would going graphite help me or does it not translate to everyone?
The moral of the story is...Get fitted.
Question is, is this gonna be as available as an X100 for example any time soon? Without it breaking the bank? This is eye opening for me, I play X7’s and still struggle to keep flight down some days.

The difference between the shafts is ball flight (launch angle and peak height), not distance. The steel shaft would be almost unplayable for Drew in windy conditions (or he’d have to get very creative with knock down shots)

Why would you want to hit a lower and longer mid iron on an approach shot or par 3 ?
Because Drew generates so much speed that the extra 1000-1500rpm of spin create havoc when there is wind present. I swing my 6i 101-102mph and I can feel his pain even with my shower speed. No need for the ball to apex at 140’ if there is plenty of decent angle with 110-120’ apex
Wind has a huge effect on a ball with extra spin
The problem with most watching is the price. None of us can afford to change shafts in our clubs. Hell, we can't even afford good clubs period, much less ones with custom shafts!
My clubs were bought in 1998 with steel shafts, and besides the recent grip change, are just like they were factory fresh.
I wish companies made clubs at a more reasonable price so more people could afford to buy clubs. It is absolutely ridiculous to spend 1500 bucks on a full set of used clubs, just to be able to play.
I've extended my clubs another inch so I'm 1.5 over standard, I was thinking I need to get graphite shafts maybe 20 grams less than my 120s to compensate for the heavier swing weight of D5.5 that im at now. thoughts?
Shaft weight does not necessarily relate directly to swingweight. Swingweight is dictated by the balance point of the shafts. I have a set with 95g Fujikura Pro Iron shafts in Tour S that swingweight higher than another set with 130g Modus 125 X flex.

why do i swing my 6 iorn 103 and my driver 120....124 legit swinging out of my shoes, stock is 118.... i am not fit for my irons or driver, but my numbers are near where they need to be when i dial back driver is at 2800 6 iron is at 6000. something is off
I don’t believe for a second his club head speed is 122mph. There are players on tour who swing their drivers that speed
As they mentioned in the video. That was an outlier, but the ball speed was probably correct at 140+.
I find it very hard to believe that the launch angle changed that much from a shaft change. Maybe if it was a degree or two, but not 5...
I did too, until I saw it in person. That’s why when we were indoors I turned our screens off so Drew couldn’t see the result. I was shocked to see such a difference.

I am sure there are still things to be learned by the high swing speed players, maybe I am alone in relating more to Mike's speed. As such I don't watch a 152 SS player video and feel like there is something in it for me as far as equipment guidance/ purchase. I do understand many might feel differently.

6-iron at 108 swing speed. If I hit 101 on my driver I feel like I'm doing pretty good.

I have had five low back surgeries and I can’t play steel shafts. I love my graphite shafted irons. I will not go back to steel.

This is all fine and well, but how many amateur golfers swing a 6i at 108mph?
Where can I get these shafts? My swing speed is up there. 137-140 mph with my drive. 200mph balls speed on GcQuad, same for Flight scope. My iron swing speed is crazy too and I balloon the ball.
certified providers/fitters. they are very expensive.

@@NettechZelkova No, rebar is what Bryson used, so I suppose the closest thing to that available on the site is the Bryson signature series shaft, but that's only available in one length it seems
You don't need to be a club fitter to see he hit the steel way more accurate. I'd like to know his stroke average too.
Please test Taylormade P790 vs the New Cobra Forged Tec Irons. Very similar in design. Should be a great comparison. Thx. Mark

Love your channel and have learned a lot. But best demo guy is Mike: right handed and driver SS 100-105, matches your most common demographic. The semi-pros who are left handed or who have driver SS of 120+ seem like irrelevant testers of equipment for the average "Joe". Why do you often present guys like Drew and the others with SS > 115 to 120. I assume many are like me and like more relatable testers?
What about people that are faster? Just don’t do videos to help them out?

He really doesn’t, remember this is a sample size of about 8 shots we’re showing. He’s had months of playing golf with each and he MUCH prefers the graphite. At his speed you can’t add as much dynamic loft as he does and still control your ball.

It looked like you're having better control with the steel shaft than you did with the graphite shaft. And that is what I hear is the real difference.
