Thousands protest ‘invasion’ on divisive Australia holiday

  • Thousands of people have rallied across Australia calling for its national day celebrations to change.
The Indigenous community and its supporters say the arrival of the first British fleet on this day in the 18th century marked a day of genocide, and a public holiday glorifies the invasion.
The debate about Australia Day is part of a larger one about increasing recognition for Indigenous Australians and giving the community a greater say in national decision-making.
Al Jazeera's Sarah Clarke reports from Brisbane, Australia.

Aboriginals have the same genes as the first human to step foot in Australia due to being isolated here when the land bridge melted. Doesn't that make them colonizers or immigrants ? They definitely aren't native & did not evolve here.

      My point exactly.
Humans are indigenous to Earth. Migration is a natural process for all life. On Earth Colonization is just a 4 billion yo natural evolutionary process, nothing abnormal at all. It's normal for animals to defend their claimed territory as does a lion but the land does not belong to them nor is it illegal to fight & kill them to take it, it's a natural process all living things follow. War is natural, the strong survive Evolution 101.
People need to remember, we are animals guided by our instincts, not supreme beings above the laws of nature.

When I received racism throughout my whole schooling my spirit became broken. When I watched all my sibling’s receiving racism my spirit became broken. First Nations Australians have freedom of movement and equal rights. Their children aren’t prosecuted in military courts like Palestinian minors are under Israeli military law, they receive a Children’s court under ‘Civil Law’ with all the same rights as everyone for a fair trial.
They don’t have military with guns swarming around their schools or put through checkpoints.
They have a 100 000 Aussies pulled onto the street each Australia Day chanting to end this colonialist holiday. It’s akin to a 100 000 Israelis marching for the Palestinians (Nakba day ) on Israeli Independence Day.
Your comparison is pathetic. The similarity is the British arriving, just as Israel was granted by the Balfour declaration, and it upset the traditional owners and created genocide of 10 000 + ( 1788) but at least we’re owning up to it ! Israel doesn’t discuss the Nakba it hides it.
And by the way Israel supplied the South African Apartheid police with military bullet proof jeeps and arms during international sanctions which is why South African whites who fought against Apartheid ( my family included) and Black South Africans stand with Palestine,. As well they are removing settled Arab communities from their land ( Sheikh Jarrah, Masafer Yatta) like South Africa did to non whites ( District 6 etc) bringing back painful memories of Apartheid for my fellow black South African friends.
