Australia mass demonstrations: Protests oppose violence against women

- Tens of thousands of people have rallied in cities across Australia demanding action to end gender-based violence.
The protests are in response to a sharp increase in the number of women being killed.
Al Jazeera’s Um-e-Kulsoom Shariff reports.
Vicky Ward is the Victorian state minister for prevention of family Violence.
She says people are more confident in coming forward to report incidents of violence.

I am quite horrified by the numbers of Aussies who are against a ceasefire in Palestine. I wonder if the misogyny (killing of women) and the racism are connected. The same people who are racist are probably also misogynistic.

@ImaadUddin-qx9im It does because of the hypocrisy of the PM, pretending to care about women while supporting their murder in Palestine.
Also, poverty, lack of available help with mental illness and housing and financial stresses have a lot to do with societal problems, which the government has all sorts of control over, so to say "It's not a problem with the government" like he did is complete BS.
Here's the thing for me, I have lived and worked in and through the Northern Territory on and off for around 15 years. Whilst in the Northern Territory I have worked in a number of paid and unpaid roles in welfare and community services. My qualifications are in this area. Domestic violence in the Northern Territory is horrendous, a regular occurence. Indigenous women are getting beaten up and killed regularly. However, these incidence's hardly get a mention in the national media?! Some caucasion woman on the east coast, in one of the capital cities, get's murdered or beaten and its front page news???

It never does. I grew up in Alaska, and the Alaska Native woman had the same problem, usually from partners severe drinking. The actual Native culture there was never a violent one until the white man came there and brought alcohol . I think it’s racism, what else can I think? Minority women at all, and it’s already bad enough for white women at that. All over the world women have been oppressed forever. Look at India’s horrible problem, the Congo. I’m an old woman now, but through my years in the military it was horrible constant sexual harassment and rape.

As an Aussie, just wanted to say thank you to AJ for reporting on this issue, especially coming from a fairly oppressive conservative-Muslim-majority state (and owner of AJ). Whomever was the editor who made this brave choice, thank you. The more we talk about it, the less accepted violence against women (and kids) becomes.
While this is true, it’s worth pointing out that they would never make a video on women’s rights in Qatar, which are far, far, far worse than any Western country on Earth

In Sydney in 2023 there were about 20,000 cases of DV by males against females. DV of females against males was 1/2 that number. In Sydney, population 5,200,000 there are about 2,500,000 males. Do the math and you find that DV made on females represents about 0.08% of Sydney males. The vast majority of Sydney males do NOT do DV! So why call it “gender-based”? Most males (99.2%) is Sydney are NOT guilty of DV. Gender is not the issue. Normal men and women need to work together to understand this thing from the point of view of mental health, male social education, and options to find and address the reasons why 0.08% of males do this. Don’t blame EVERY male. You will lose their cooperation. They have been through the testosterone-fuelled toxic environment of male adolescence. We need to understand it and find solutions as men and women together, in the interests of all females and males,

You cannot protect or educating young men and women by protesting each other. You need better awareness programmes for both men and women. If u only treated men it will lead to isolated men, and they will not contribute to the marriage positively. This must be handle carefully.
