I’m 20k and 7 months into a 2023 v8 76. You have captured the essence of the 76 perfectly. It’s the most overpriced, rudimentary, poorly specced vehicle I have ever owned. It’s also the most endearing, fun and engaging car I’ve ever owned. It’s never leaving me…..
Fantastic review Sam. I’ve always liked these lifestyle/camping videos, please keep them coming. As for the 76, as you’ve said the very thing that makes it average is also what makes it so special. If this is the most fun vehicle to go camping with, it’s got my vote. I’d still go for the V8!
I gather that the V6 3.3 unit from the LC 300 isn't far off being whacked into this ??. It'll be A single turbo variant . Sold alongside the 2.8. We have 5 current model LC 70's with the 2.8 donk . Had them about 6 months or so , no problems towing etc . Yep they are rudimentary, but they are tough. Ours constantly cope with 45c + days in summer, dust, mud, , sandy or rocky terrain . No problems at all. All are fully kitted out with suspension mods, Sat Communications gear UHF's full Bull bars , steps, under side protective gear, LR tanks etc that adds another $12k or so to the purchase price . Not cheap, but they are pretty dependable & totally reliable
One of the reasons this new model is arriving in Australia with the 2.8Lt Four cylinder was that Toyota was approached by the Toyota Gibraltar Stockholdings Ltd (TGS) to provide a simpler Landcruiser 4x4 with an Automatic transmission as they are the Official distributer and supplier to the United Nations, and Non-Government Organisations around the World that have Female Drivers who had requested the Automatic Transmissions as well for ease of maintenance for their staff and as these new Toyota Landcruiser's have a large existing market for Toyota 4x4 Enthusiasts in Australia and Southern Africa and the Middle East
If you want 5 seats, longer wheelbase, huge storage, longer leaf springs, 180L fuel, and more headroom than any other vehicle, then buy the Troopcarrier. And all Troopys come with the tall 33" skinny tyres which I find better than the fat 33".
Personally I don't think Toyota made these for extreme 4 wheel driving like that. But as you say for towabillity it can't be beaten. That's why I've just order one. To tow our 3.5t van in out back tracks, without having to do all that gvm upgrade. I was looking very hard at the patrol, but decided weight and diesel is better. Great review...thanks.
I have a ‘92 hilux 2.2 and have been waiting for something a little more frugal and luxurious without sacrificing dependability and thus derivative looks the part. In Africa we drive and camp in big 5 country a lot, a vehicle that can get you out of those dangerous terrains is essential, I wouldn’t rely on any other brand! I would love to see its over landing capability as well. Very nice review 👍🏼👍🏼
Great review. By way of introduction Im a retired auctioneer been doing that for 37 years. Got a new company car every 5000-15,000km ive had just about everything. My personal choice has always been landcruiser. Ive had 40,60,75,80,100,200,300 5x v8 utes, one troopie and an fj cruiser. I hated the 300. Tinny rubbish. Sold the 79 series and bought a hilux as i wanted to see ig i could live with the 2.8/auto and I can. However I think toyota are taking the piss out of people like me. For me its about engineering ie fix the track issue. They dont. Why? Because theres been no other solid axle competitor (merc Gs are crap). So toyota just chuck a wiring harness in from hilux and give it the same “electronic features” as my SR dual cab. Big deal. Yes based on experience the landcruiser 70 tows better than a std hilux but its $20-35,000 more expensive and you have to ask “what am I doing? Ie is my vehicle fit for purpose?” For me the hilux needs a Bilstein suspension kit and thats about it. For the first time ever a grenadier or patrol or even a ford f150 is a consideration. If toyota can widen the track on the rogue to compete with ranger they can fix the 70. Ive still got miss worldfj45 1979 with a genuine 113,000k to remind me what a real landcruiser is. Not some hybrid hilux
Those new wheels are actually based on the 3rd gen 4runner limited wheels from the late 90s with the 5 pointed star design imo they were the best stock wheels this generation 4runner had in the U.S.
If your going to review a car mate make sure you actually check your facts, the 76 Series is the only vehicle in the LC70 line up that has tether points for car seats, they are above the rear barn doors.
Glad I saw this vid. Its a no for the LC for me...just from seeing the body roll and narrow rear track compared to the front. Yes, it looks fun though.
First comment, go me. I am seriously thinking of getting one. I am solo so thinking of removing back seats, just need enough room for dog. Can you tell me if it would be possible to sleep in back 185cm person if needed with rear seats removed. I also have a small flat bottom aluminum boat I would like to carry on top, do you think it's possible. I don't do any crazy technical 4wd work.
@@naysunhuang yeah that's my dilemma, I was attracted to the shorter wheel base and lighter weight of the 76. Really struggling with this, troopy or 76. Could easy go either way.
you probably will find it too small. If you move the front seats forward and get an extension you just might. i'm 181 cm and i've decided to sleep on the roof. in the back only in case of really bad weather.
To make it steer better on the street, use a heaver swaybar. TRD? Yes it will suck more rock crawling. Use quick disconnect swaybar links. I would suggest these rock crawling even with the stock swaybar. Drop some tire air pressure. Can't believe the snorkel doesn't seal. It's a bit girly if the interior can't be hosed out.
Well done for including the Tank 300 'comparison'. Imagine if you could remove the badges and ask non car people which one they thought was made in China. They would fall about laughing and point out that it is obviously the old tech agricultural dinosaur that was awful on-road and just okay off-road but not a match for modern Japanese engineering of the Toyota Tank. 😉
Lc76 cab chassis will be very similar price as ranger raptor, Ford comes with more power , higher technology and ride comfort. But if you ask me which vehicle I should chose definitely land cruiser.
Gees, the Pinnacle Fire Trail is a bit erroded since I was there last, need to go take a first hand look at it now. Funny how Tank 300 shows Toyota 76 up immediately. I'm very familiar with the hideous squirmy stomach you were suffering with the 76's instability, they are appalling on off chamber sections. Owed one, glad we opted out of it. Got into one of the very last series of GU Patrol it's far far better, on & off road, superior in fact. Sam, regarding the Tank, you forgot to mention or try pothole mode, (poor translation), it's meant to have an impressive affect on off road traction control apparently, superior to rock mode from what I've heard. Please try it when out again.

The 70’s are great cars, but they are just the biggest rip off they’re $30k+ over priced, paying the new car with all the latest tech for a 30 year old car with a hilux engine in it, not putting shit on the car, just the price tag.
The 70's series and the new LC250 Prado needs the LC300 enjin and 48V, they allready save costs on the old interior in the 70 series with old tech, this is just a Hilux and Toyota is milking you.
Why did the Card show Drive Away $50990 when you said it was $79k?? The LC 70 series is just a total Sh!tbix and nobody would buy it - and yet they do. Can’t understand why as it’s pure rubbish. The V8 sounded nasty anyway.
People buy this, because if the car breaks down in the middle of nowhere you die! I put my life on Toyota because it has proven its worth... Now the Tank is ... Just like China

It's not overpriced if you'll keep it forever, a 30000 Korean shitbox that's junk in 5 years is overpriced
This kind of car, you hold on to it like an old watch. Then in 30 years sell it for $15k.😂

Hope they eventually put the V6 diesel in the 70 series. That would be elite with the auto.
@sounds_like_pain3345 it's apparently on the Toyota radar. No time frame given , but maybe late 2025 at the earliest. Hopefully before .

There are top tether anchor point for kids seats - they are above the barn doors. Just no isofix points.

Always thought car makers should offer a ' sleeper ' pack to covert many cars into a bed.😅 pleasant dreams.
probably better off with a troopy for that. much more interior space.

I wanted a future proof vehicle but as a new father the fact that it doesn't even have cup holders in the back is a deal breaker.
Wish it had the honeycomb grill like the XB Falcon😅.
