The film is outstanding (very interesting and good shots, like from the cinema - ex.16:27) Steam locomotives are known for museums and tours. But I did not see anything like a railway bus (here "FIAT" & old military truck 4:17) by the way the idea: It's good to create a new perspective, for example, always mount 2 camera like a car camera over tracks (like car accidents for continuous recording).
Italian engineering socks. I had a motorcycle - Motto Guzzi - the worst electrical equipment Magnetti Marelli socks. But there are parts of Africa (like Northern Somalia, ) where they do not have even small gauge railway.Mario
The railway looks well cared for, apart from some station buildings, these aren't very important the way they run the trains for tourist purposes now (altough a lot of locals seem to take oportunity from the train running). But some of the problems encountered tell the mechanical maintenance is not completely up to level yet, a blown washout plug means the thread on this had been worn and should have been recut before such an incident happens, it can easily be done because they have conical threads and can be recut several times, provided you have the right tap and die. Luckily they dropped the fire before the crown sheet got dry, but the boiler took a serious blow with pressure and temperature dropping so quickly, you can expect leaking tubes, flues and stay bolts after this.
Coal is carried to the rear of the footplate. Because of a shortage of coal it was delivered to the loco in sacks. (see my YT video Eritrea 2009 part 3 at 10 mins) I do not know if this was how it was delivered in the past, additional information from others would be most welcome.
Eritrea is located in the Horn of Africa in East Africa. It is bordered to the northeast and east by the Red Sea, Sudan to the west, Ethiopia to the south, and Djibouti to the southeast. The railway runs from Massawa on the Red Sea coast to the capital Asmara 118 km inland.
Thanks ! I knew where Erythrea is, but my question was about the location of this part of the railways ; I guess it's not so far from Asmara. Does it still exist ? politically and economically, this country is, along with N Korea, about the worse place to be on earth There was also a line between Asmara and Keren, but it seems that mostly the rails have been taken away ; there where as many work of tunnels and bridges too.
Non e' un errore. La scritta litterina e' fatta apposta. Litter in inglese significa spazzatura. Qualche buontempone -sto usando un eufemismo - non si e' reso conto che quella LITTORINA sta operando dal 1935....
Don’t jump to conclusions, you weren’t there. The locos were in very poor condition through years of neglect. Eritrea had suffered a long and costly war with Ethiopia. Few trained staff and no money for maintenance. Everybody had worked miracles to keep them running for us. The boiler washout plug that failed was not the fault of the footplate crew

Its Littorina ... not Litterina ... tx
Thanks for the correction
the name comes from Littorio,it was built under Mussolini
Eritrea has trains?
Littorina e non litterina.
Already noted by Andrea Corno (below)
