Adagio for Strings is a work by Samuel Barber arranged for string orchestra from the second movement of his String Quartet, Op. 11. He composed Adagio For Strings in 1936 while he was spending a summer in Europe. In January 1938, Barber sent an orchestrated version of the Adagio for Strings to Arturo Toscanini. On November 5, 1938, a selected audience was invited to Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center to watch Toscanini conduct the first performance; it was broadcast on radio and also recorded. Initially, the critical reception was mixed. The New York Times' Olin Downes praised the piece, but he was reproached by other critics who claimed that he overrated it.

Compressor cuts off loudness above say 0dB, and makes everything that was quiet become loud now. End result? The sound becomes strong, indeed, but you also lose "air". Besides, ears scream "enough" after a while :D Also, this is Barber's Adagio, this is not some stupid pop loudness-war song... Cheers! :D

Agreed. It has been "brick walled", and it shows. The piece has lost a huge amount of the intensity of emotion that gives the original so much power.
