- An sampling of the world of Nelson Sullivan in the 1980s edited by Robert Coddington and presented at New York's New Museum as a part of an exhibition about the East Village. Videos bu Nelson Sullivan
i do think there's something beautiful about the fact that when highlighting who HE is, he chooses to highlight his friends and the admiration he has for them, their talents, their career, etc... it says volumes about the type of person he was, kind and humble.
So true 💯🎯
You want the truth? Most LGBT people are broken. They were broken from a young age, which is why most of them seem to act child-like. And as children are, they're pure. They're in arrested development. Problem is that victims usually end up having their own victims so the cycle repeats itself. Like a virus.
Makes me so sad at the end that Nelson was so happy for 1989 but then both he and Christina died that year, it makes you realise how quickly it can call be gone. Thankful for his legacy which means he lives on forever and Christina does too
Amen. 🙂💜
Nelson's videos bring joy and sadness all at once. Thank God he was around.
Life is so short, so unpredictable, so precious. I love you Nelson, thank you for everything you shared with us.
Nelson gave us Time Travel. Brilliant.
Thank goodness for Nelson’s forward thinking so we can take a trip back to the 80’s anytime we like 🙌🏼💕
Just one minuscule example of life on this day in the 80s think about our whole history and what people went through every day of every second of Life Span it's insane
Wow....what a visionary and pioneer in so many ways....he was tuned into a whole nother frequency of consciousness!
I was born in '75, I remember the style so well, I was a lucky kid, my mom always let me dress in my own way, I can remember taking my normal clothes and making them into something magnificent to match the style these awesome humans had...
"I was Street Trash and there weren't any streets..." Nelson's dry wit brings me back to his videos.
What a wonderful human being. If only we could all be like Nelson! It would have been so fun hanging out with him and his friends! 💖💖💖
Look like no one’s been here for a while. I was born in 1969 and born and raised in NYC. Worked in Soho @ Arise Futon. Had GREAT times. Survived Covid. These videos are fantastic and bring back so many memories.
The original vlogger...the OG

The ending made me cry. I’m so happy I stumbled across these beautiful videos from a wonderful man. I never met you but I feel I knew you R.I.P. Nelson Sullivan. ❤️😘 your alive in all that have watched your videos and all that you met in the 41 years you was alive. 💕
what a legend nelson sullivan was =]
Matthew Gunning lol legend in the gay world u mean 99% of straight people have no idea who this freak is
*dana woolaver* Why do you care? Why are you trolling his videos?
*BTW:* Nelson was very well-known on the NYC scene. Also, after his death, Swiss TV did a short docu on him and his revolutionary video work.

When you're so busy being young, there's no time for anything else.
So true.
I love what Nelson says about New Years 1989, I was born on the 3rd of February that year, just a month and a few days later.. That made me feel really good, and sad at the time.. When he speaks about Fire Island in 1979, and what he had hoped the new decade would bring.. My early childhood was a mixed bag of great times that are marked by tragedy. By the time I was 6 in 1995 all of my mom's best and closest friend's had died of AIDS related causes.. It was terrible.. But only recently her and I were discussing the wonders of modern medicine, and how different our lives would've been if the advancements in life saving treatments had been available even 3-6 years sooner. But now AIDS is not a death sentence, AIDS is manageable and that in and of itself is a miracle. Now others like my mom and those in the position of the families of those who were afflicted, no longer have to live in limbo; They don't have to be afraid..
Just like being gay, now it is (for the most part) socially acceptable, it is a positive thing to come out and be yourself, and that's amazing. The way things changed so fast in my lifetime, I cannot believe it.. I feel like in the mere 10-15 years it took between my birth and the time I hit puberty, the whole world changed on an epic (industrial revolution) sized scale.. It's just amazing to see, the lives being saved daily, and the kids who are growing up with everything at their finger tips, and the US actually has made steps towards universal healthcare (it's sometimes unbelievable).. I genuinely believe things will only get better, no matter what the political state of our country is. We always persevere and in the end, what is right and fair and just always prevails (no matter how long it takes).. I love my country (not my gov't), we are (as a whole) good people here. And I am proud of us..
Sakura Blossom shame how downhill are country has become fucking sjw and people get butthurt in the smallest little things
dana woolaver Oof, mah feels, ima report you for that! Only joking.😁 You’re absolutely correct, though. It’s a fucking shame, as Oscar Wilde once put it, how our country has gone from birth to decadence without civilization in between. We’re a nation of crybabies and thugs at the same time-these self-entitled, lazy, directionless, unmotivated SJW’s will whine and cry about everything not going their way and if you stand up to them, they’ll jump you with bike locks and splatter you with urine and feces. There’s no such thing as honor or self-worth or integrity with these types-though they preach socialism on one hand they’re the most selfish, greedy, lazy, and ignorant people living in our society. They’re constantly angry at those who succeed in life. A simple businessman is a criminal to them yet it’s businessmen (and women) who put the clothes on the backs of these fools, but they’re too stupid to make that connection. The best antidote for these ranting little children is to take away any platform they may have and to ignore them completely, just like you would take away a toy from a child who’s misbehaving. Let them piss and moan all they want and let it fall on deaf ears. If they cause any destruction of property, then it’s on the police to deal with them.
@@dwoolaver1549 sad and its keeps going backwards with the orange clown
@@maddog8356 preach!! 👍👍👍
@@JasonFlorida yeah blame the orange man....who you gonna blame in 2023?
Still find myself coming back and watching Nelson's videos. Ahead of his time.
Iman, Mugler/ Herrera/Leibowitz... and not to mention Willie Nijia that was one hell of an event....The amazing late 1980's
Nelson Sullivan you are just brilliant no other words can describe you !! If you had not passed you would of done great things in today's world, you are a time traveler in your own way I just love you ! And want to give you a big hug
But he wouldn’t last the year. How tragic all of Nelson’s wonderful plans for the future never came to fruition. Just imagine if he’d still been around today-he’d rule RUclips and beyond.
I have been watching your tapes for days Nelson!! thank you! ❤💛💚💙💜 rip
I am happy that Nelson was about the people, the scene going on. He was like a child full of wonder and is still showing his life and surroundings. He really cared about others, that is plain to see.He was such a witty laid back guy. I am from SC and have been through his hometown of Kershaw, but the next time i am up there, i really want to see around the place he lived. He was a very very special person. I think everyone feels connected to him in some way that watch these videos. Big hugs to you Nelson ...i know you out there somewhere.
The editing and the final scene touched my heart. So beautiful. 💓
Nelson would be 74 this year, I'm sure he would have made it commercially and by all rights should be living out his autumn years in comfort...R.I.P Mr. Sullivan.
I looked it up for you Nelson and fans!
Samuel Sullivan “Sunset” Cox (1824-1889) was born in Zanesville, Ohio, and served his home state as a Democratic Congressional representative from 1857 to 1865 before being unseated. After moving to New York in 1866, Cox served again in Congress for several terms from 1869 until 1889
The statue is in Tompkins Square
Sculptor Louise Lawson’s statue of Cox, unveiled in 1891, depicts him orating before Congress.

I wonder if the statue was torn down by the SJW's?
@@wiseguy9202 why? Because he supported slavery?
@@user-pw9td8fb6b and? Good or bad, is still part of American history, and a reminder. You can't delete it.
Thank you Nelson, you've inspired another artist from thirty years on. Wish I could have met you...
This is one of my favorites so far. I adore this man and am so grateful for his work.
Seems that Nelson had such a kind heart,
gentle soul, and genuine presence.❤️😘❤️
Thank you so much for the many hours of film footage!👍
Glad that someone put these videos out. We all love Nelson. I wish we all had a friend like Nelson.
I like how Nelson captures picks up on small things and makes them interesting and then chronicles his friends time during the 80's, and his introductions, his relationships with them and managing to organize it so well that you feel you are watching a day in the life of Nelson Sullivan and friends and family including his dog black out, the bird store, the restaurants and clubs he frequents along with occasionally trips outside of N.Y. The most interesting of his subjects were Christina. May she RIP.
I watch this because I was happy in the 80s,but not any more.So I pop here to feel happy again
I'm 54 and agree with you.
Happy new year 1989 Nelson ,glad you guys made it home safe .
Oh Nelson!! A bit before my time but I love your videos. Wish you were still doing your bit! You were truly a beautiful gem. I especially love the videos with your family..singing Biblical tunes.
But each video of yours, is wonderful!
Love on!🕊️🕊️🙏🏼❤️
Incredible how he says my life is pretty interesting and I want to share it all with you. And that there wasn't even a "you" to share it to back then, other than VHS tapes.
Absolutely fabulous!
Sullivan may have been the first vlogger
Nelson was before his time! Thank u sir!RIP
I cant get enough of his videos!😍😍😍
Nelson had the foresight to see the meaning in capturing what he did. Fenton and Randy were definitely passed the torch, he deserves more acknowledgment!
80s NOSTALGIA!! 🇺🇲👍🏻
i love nelson so much and this channel! please don't ever stop posting videos!
Sasha Paige *They will have to at some point, eventually there won’t be more tapes to post*
I think I saw somewhere that there is at least 79 days' worth of footage...? I may be wrong about that.
I've heard 1200/1500 hours
Of Nelson's friends, Eddie Braddock intrigued me with his posting stock-market info everywhere, although I doubt he had a nickel to invest. At least the quality of his automobile suggested he didn't. I believe he's in California now, dealing in some sort of internet currency.
"I tell ya, I wish I had time to show you all those tapes"
OMG Deee-Lite!!!! Pouring champagne lol
RIP. Nelson
Thank God for letting me find Nelson
THANKS FOR SHARING EVERYTHING WITH US NELSON! I HOPE YOU ARE ABLE TO SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE YOU TOUCHED WITH THESE
Excellent video. And to see all those legends, including Leigh Bowery, made it all the more powerful.
Great work, Nelson.🙏
🤘👌
Well, that was incredible. Thank you
R.I.P. Nelson!❤❤❤
It is true that cameras has such a magnetism, thanks to you I can feel I am there. You guys were pioneer in many subjects, and many had call
You creepy, fuck !
You were kind of sad remembering how society had chance. I can’t imagine now.
Rip in peace sweetheart Nelson Sullivan
Vlogging before it's time
laviaslavic1 wow haven't heard that on any of his vids
Just think Nelson would have loved it now!! With technology and how much the Rainbow movement has changed 💜
Love you Nelson x
Never could stand the sight of Musto - ICK!
I wish I could go to that time and hang out with Nelson and meet everyone
I think I'm in love with Nelson. Is that weird?
I've enjoyed looking up the posters you see pasted on the posts and the different neighbourhood stores...Key Food location in a couple shots here is still open!! It is a huge chain now.
For all the drag queens freak shows and razz-ma-tazz, Nelson was best just being a home with Blackout or in Atlanta or home in Kershaw...
Agreed. I liked dick too. He was a kind man.
Ballroom Culture in this video!!! Willie!!
Everyone's new hero. Nelson (John) Sullivan
Power of a camera. Love that 😁
Secure people like RuPaul, are always the ones who succeed....being insecure sucks.
OMG! He got Willie Ninja vogueing and Leigh Bowery!
Feels sad remembering he s gone soon
The time when everyone said "fabulous" in every conversation
Oh wow so awesome to see Lee Bowery!!! And vouging has come a long way these days!!
8:27 Nelson was right about that in ways he didn't even realize :)
He yawns often in his videos. I wonder if there's a connection between that and his eventual and tragic heart attack.
Probably staying up all night too.
I love the addition of one of the many incidents where Sylvia acted like a twat towards Nelson and his camera and he just kept on filming... Though they definitely used one of the more tame and civilized moments
spicy recording !!
That black& yellow jacket looked nice on him
Nelson, Sullivan's, I listened too him's chatted, and also... realized he's not new, Yorkers, becuz...becuz...accents, or maybe he's, residences, of area's, Manhattan, maybe he's its... not should, also he's intelligently, and talented,
Le rough thing is that videos were recorded about 1983 to 1989...man we are talking 40 years ago. It's very crazy. Is Nelson a passenger from the future?
*All of Nelson’s friends except Dick Richards and Rupaul were purely obnoxious to me. I always wanted to find out more about Christina though, which is impossible because she doesn’t seem to have a last name. I know it’s impossible but I would love for science to one day figure out a way to revive those who have passed, like many years before. I often wonder if this was possible, would Nelson be the same person? Would he be horrified at the amount of time that’s gone by?*
RIP Christina. Christina's name was Chris Smith.
Captcha Neon yes... Look up Chris Smith and you'll find some things. Also, you should check out another channel on RUclips called Retro Room. That channel has a lot on Christina and other club kids. Also, you could check out the Peeww with Michael Alig and Ernie Glam. (It's on RUclips also). They discuss Christina at times and give insight to a lot of what went on during these times!
🤖🤓
Chris Smith or Christian Smith was Christina's name. She was absolutely fascinating and I can see why Nelson wanted to record everything around him. OG vlogger of the 80s. RIP
Christina's real name was Chris Smith. He was an autogynephile who affected a German accent. His style was appropriated from Christa Päffgen (known as Nico) from The Velvet Underground. IIRC, he was a teacher who quit his job because he wanted to pretend to be Christa and become famous even though he wasn't particularly talented. He had mental health issues.
What's the name of the guy at 19:22? I believe I met him a few times while in Paris in the 80s.
That ending segment about 1989 was really hard to watch.
Can you chronicle Nelson's videos from the first to the last? I would love to watch them as he progressed in time. His life was not only about the gay scene. He let us look into is life. I am so glad I had a chance to watch these videos,
Walking around doiing a documentary on yourself, or what’s known today as vlogging.
He knew
1:29." Walking round doing a documentary huh " ? " It's more fun on this side of the camera anyway " ! . 🤔😆
Dean Johnson.... i see where amber rose stole her style, lol
Can someone point me towards the vid of his friend drawing with chalk on the sidewalk, near the start. I’ve seen that dude in vids before and I just knew he’s some sort of savant/genius. 😂👍

"The Now Explosion" derives from Showbiz Pizza "The Rockafire Explosion" you know the animatronic band back then that entertain kids but we now know the pizza place as Chucky Cheese today. Good one Larry Tee lol
Happy New Year ♡
Anyone know the nelson video with the clip at 1:45 with eddie
“I have to look him up” - where? There was no internet. He was ahead of his time in an eerie way
Some of us remember libraries full of books, with card files telling us which books to look in.
@@keithnichols7926 I'm old enough to remember those days as well.
