People, this is for Mid-day and the series is called Milestones 'Mumbai'. When speaking about Mumbai, one cannot ignore the influence real estate has on the city's activities. Sorry you're annoyed, but the only thing you should bother typing is 'thank you'. You're welcome.
It's the media which demarcated movies as commercial or parallel cinema. over time people associated with the demarcation. but at the end of the day, there are awesome movies which are commercial & some crap movies in parallel cinema, the audience will go watch a movie that's good, be it commercial or parallel. the advent of multiplexes created a renewed platform, which gave a breather to parallel cinema and also changed the nature of commercial cinema. commercial cinema was made with ingredients that would fill single screen cinema theatres. so the commerical aspect dictated the form of the movies. most ending up as crap products for mass consumption. these two stalwarts are examples of people who stayed true to their craft. kudos to them. latest bane of Bollywood is mediocrity in scripts and story. but then you come across gems such as andhadhun etc. which turn the tide. content is improving. but the 80s was aperiodic where commercial cinema was crap and at cinema was at its peak. amazing talent such as om puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Dipti naval, Farooq Sheikh, Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi gave some superb performances. so it's a really interesting evolution.
Filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap and Sudhir Chaudhary have used parts of cities very much in their films as a main part sometimes. Their films are because there were those cities. There wouldn't have been Dharavi if not for that slum areas of Dharavi in Mumbai, neither Masaan if it would have not been Benaras. So interviewer is in that aura too, and he knows there is life there in cities, that's why he is asking some real question rather than about their own personal lives!
There are two types of 'rich' people. One who are genuinely rich and the others who write books about 'how to become rich,' lot of these books are bestsellers. These authors make a fortune out of telling people how to become rich and dabble into personal investment training, stock marketing consulting etc. space I believe Anurag Kashyap is type two here. He constantly tells you how he revolted against the system, small town background, how he excelled, struggled and made great films. In reality, Kashyap has not won a single international award (Cannes, Oscar, Bafta, Berlin, Venice, Sundance, Golden Globe etc.). I am not seeking foreign validation but broadly it gives you an overview of how impactful, avant garde, revolutionary a filmmaker is. Yes, he was a judge in few but that's absolutely irrelevant. He is all style but no real substance. His movies just come and go without a dent. Honestly, I would have loved and adored someone like him to represent India in the international platform to make us proud. Someone who'd make one cracker of a film in two/three years. But, alas, he has taken the easier route...of impressionism. Basically, a low budget production enabler under the garb of intellectualism, experimentation and unorthodoxness. Albeit, a different Mahesh Bhatt of our age.
Are you trying to be different just for the sake of it? Because the way you are thrashing him certainly sounds exaggeration! He challenged the star system by casting good actors and kinda led the underground guerilla cinema.. He might be losing his touch with his recent films but he certainly was experimental and path breaking with films like black Friday, no smoking, dev d, paaanch. In dev d, the places were hip, the visuals were trippy, there was some psychedelic elements in subtle ways! He might not be in his best form but he certainly will find a way to survive and thrive and hopefully keep astonishing us with his cinema too
@@sejwalvishu His cult status is over hyped. He himself is branding and marketing his own cult. He did not challenge the star system by choice, he himself says he did not have money so hired new faces. About Kashyap leading underground guerrilla cinema, i don't know, we can debate. Yes, Black Friday has few flames which could not become engulfing fire in his later movies. Directors slow down with age, shows mediocrity with ill health but Kashyap at a very young age leveraged his image which unfortunately reflects the lack of serious film talent in our country. Just like Tamil films, Hindi films (two most important) too are stuck in shocking and pleasing the gallery in the name of good cinema.
