      These animals were born in captivity, descended from orangutans that were rescued many years ago
      They have a healthy lifestyle, with all the food and medical care they could need
      They have a state of the art habitat that more than exceeds the capacity recommended for captive orangutans
      this included large green outdoor areas and dry indoor areas and can freely move between them throughout the day
      Hopefully with the essential continued work zoos like this and conservationists do around the world
      one day all great apes will be safe to live and thrive, in their natural environment, the wild

      Normally I might agree with you. However there are poachers who kill these animals for fun, sport, money etc. Those in regular zoos usually live on rock or concrete. These here are taken care of. They even have Veterinarians who can help. They don't have that in the wild. It's usually better to weigh the pros and cons. I will also say that I'm sure there are some places that are horrible and shouldn't have them. I think they should all (zoos etc. be looked at on an individual bases. The zoos I went to years ago never had their animals living in a place as nice as this. And these are not locked into small cages. They are kept in groups so they have each other. etc.

    • @ApeTracker1
      @ApeTracker1  6 месяцев назад +10

      Yes it is a sad reality that they are declining rapidly in the wild
      It is the amazing and essential work that great accredited zoos like Chester do, that give these magnificent animals hope for the future
      With the goal that they may once again thrive in the wild
      All zoos in the UK are monitored and have to be up to standard with expert animal care and facilities, including minimum size of enclosures for the animals they hold and many like Chester greatly exceed these facilities
      The Realm of the red ape where this family of Bornean Orangutans live, along side Agile Gibbons, is widely considered the best facility in the country.
      This habitat has an overall exhibit size of 4920m² and consists of 3 x 10 metre high indoor enclosures and outdoor spaces. T
      he apes have 24 hour access to the enclosures and are not required to retire to a specific sleeping area at night. They also have areas that they can hide form visitors if they want to.

    Do they “wean” their babies from breast feeding?

    • @ApeTracker1
      @ApeTracker1  6 месяцев назад +1

      Orangutans have the longest infant development period of all the great apes and most prolonged nursing period of all mammals
      At around 3 months they can start to eat soft fruit in addition to breast feeding
      At first their mothers help by grinding the food with their teeth then giving it to their baby to chew
      At about 1 year babies can start to solid food independently
      Orangutan mothers begin to Wean babies - the transition from nursing to solid foods at around 3 - 4 years of age
      but it has been estimated that orangutans can breast feed for up to 9 years especially in the wild
