It is called a sea food boil and is served in a plastic bag . Seafood boils are a big thing in America … so you had a North American experience! Different culture , different presentation 😀One of the advantages of being abroad is that you can go on a culinary adventure… and expand your culinary repertoire

It’s polite and good manners to carry a small gift for your hosts… can be flowers, wine, fruit, something you have baked or things for the kids… normally get something they will appreciate and use. Wrap it, put it in nice packaging or gift bag.. I always avoid being the one always receiving… people in this society have so it’s just a token of appreciation of their hospitality.

It is always polite to bring something if someone invites you to their home for dinner. I recall a friend of mine had a loss in the family, I brought some food and she was very appreciative because her fridge was empty.

I'm Nigerian and in my family, I observed how adults always go to visit people with bread or banana or any other gift item. Even my husband does the same, so I feel it's an Igbo culture, not sure. Or just something done out of courtesy.

It's just a courtesy to go with something, especially if you are going with your family cuz that will be a lot of food they'll spend to entertain you all. So I just see it as little compensation and I do it happily.
You just said that was your first meal of the day, after the guests had left. Curiosity.... You didn't eat with the guest?
I don't eat sometimes too, though the rest of my family will eat with the guest. But I worry inside if it looks bad.

It’s not a must but it’s nice to bring a hostess gift when being hosted. Some popular items are. Bottle of wine, a fruit platter, a desert or a nice smelling candle. Amy of the above. It doesn’t have to be elaborate 😊It’s just a little show of appreciation for being hosted
