@@jeanrunkle1059 This guitar is pretty awesome if you want less of a "metal" looking kind of 8 string, in my opinion. The H-1008 definitely seems awesome, and the Evertune is something I've yet to try. I can't imagine you can get more tuning stable than that, but the "generic" metal aesthetics of the H-1008 is the only thing keeping me from diving in for it. The SC-608's slightly rounder radius does feel better for barre chording than the ultra flat radii, in my experience. The voicing options on the Fishmans also can really help it with effects heavy ambient guitar tones (mostly talking about the middle pickup's Voice 2, almost turns into like a single coil). I definitely understand that it's a Stephen Carpenter signature as that's what I'd expect from Deftones songs. I found with my SC-608, when I messed with the pickup heights to get them balanced on voicing 1 at least, the middle pickup was actually relatively far into the body. I've seen complaints about the middle pickup getting in the way when picking but I hardly noticed it once they were adjusted. I definitely could feel it sometimes if I REALLY dug into it, but it wasn't enough during normal playing that I noticed. I also love strats so I've kinda adapted my playing to not be necessarily in the middle of the bridge and neck pickups. I think the SC-608 has the most personality of those guitars and makes it that much more fun to play.
that fucking riff in the beginning where you go from open F# to open chord, then D to B power chord with palm mutes is just AWESOME. combined with the drums its sounds so heavy and rad 😤😤😤
Korea is my favorite deftones song. There is serious power behind Stephen Carpenter's guitar in that song, somehow maybe more than any other, which is a bold statement.
This is awesome, I bought this guitar probably about when this video was made, but I've been loving it and decided to see what other people thought about it. This video made me love the instrument even more, and your riffs are awesome. Deftones is my favorite band and it's the main reason I decided to buy this beast, it's my first guitar that isn't 6 string. It's so much fun! But I learned even more about it today, thanks for the fantastic video. And thank you Stephen Carpenter for creating my favorite sounds in the world :)
I am an old 80s metal head (still young at 51), just bought the 607b tele model and I must say...the finish is crazy. I have owned Jackson American made Sl-2 and customs my whole life, but these guitars at these prices... They are equal to or better than those. Next will either be the purple 607 or that 608..... great video. I actually like it when someone lets you hear the guitar and does a good job of letting the guitar speak for herself....
YASS! Sick riffs, sick tones, you're one of the best going right now man, you're making me awful tempted to get one for myself after being so impressed with the purple Stef 7
Thank you for putting this in my sights. I just got ky first seven string and have been getting into music that uses an 8 string that I’ve been wanting to play but couldn’t because I didn’t own a seven or an 8. I’m in love with the way this sounds. It’s exactly the kind of tone profile I’ve been looking to achieve. Thank you for your knowledge on some of this stuff
I own this axe and I love it. I’m not really a 8 string player, but this thing is so fun to play around on. The pickups are great and it growls like crazy.
my only itch was that im torn between this and the meshuggah you mentioned, and i was just waiting so badly for your verdict wich one you like the most :D:D
Couple of notes: Yes, I know, I love this guitar and I don't mind saying that at all... multiple times...haha! Also, the music in this video sounds good if you crank it ;) Mine didn't come with a case but they should come with a hardcase. Luckily the store I bought it from has ordered a case for me. I also forgot to mention that this thing is quite heavy :). I'm sorry for not demoing the neck pickup by itself but I usually prefer to focus more on the things that inspire me when it comes to writing music for demos and such. Hope you don't mind! :) Finally: that OH 212 ORNG pack may be an oldy but it sounds sooo good with this guitar and my Helix settings! Cheers!

Man, what a fantastic review! Usually such videos are either hit or miss but I really enjoyed watching yours. Very well structured and catching. I'm huge fan of Deftones (and Stef) and played most of my life on the SC607b, so I completely understand your passion about these guitars and can literally feel your joy playing this beast. Since this model was released in red sparkle, I've been wanting to have it in my arsenal, so hopefully it'll happen rather sooner than later. Last but not least and the most outstanding thing of this review is your riffs! Holy cow! They sound Defton-ish but with your obvious personal touch. In addition to this, guitar (as well as overall) tone is damn good. Looking forward to more reviews from ya! P.S. I'd greatly appreciate if you could tell more about your bass in this video (tuning, tone, etc.) because I'm a bit puzzled how to track bass for an 8string guitar.
Very nice and articulate riffing man! I do have the black model of that same guitar. I'm gonna try to lower the neck/middle pickup because I would say it sometimes get struck by my pick too. Nice review!
Truly amazing guitar. Who could not be inspired playing this? I have been trying to convince myself that LTD isnt killing it with these signatures... But between this and the Buz-7... Good lord.
Hi John, both voicings are of course active. Just by tweaking the design of the PCB wavers in the pickups different frequency ranges are emphasized hence the "Voice". I have the Tosin Abasi set in my Ibanez RGA8 and I am very happy with those. I like the thorough review of the guitar. You have great licks as well. Thanks, dankjewel.
Yes I know but voicing 2 sounds more like a passive pickup and voicing 1 more like an active pickup so I just call them that :) Never tried the Tosin's but I'm sure they're great!!
According to the dunlop interview a few years go, he was indeed using a .080 for drop E but did not like it. I don't know/remember if we went back to .069 or tried .074. I agree with you that .074 is nice for F# on a 27" scale. I also use that gauge on my 30 inch scale. .074 is a bit light for Drop E but I tried 0.80 on a 27" scale and did not like it.
Just bought this beauty today! Super excited for it to come in. I was really sure of it, but this in depth video really solidified it. I’ll be back once I get it in with some personal thoughts. Thanks for the vid!
Back with an update. This is by far the best guitar I’ve owned. I’m in love with it. I’ve been lucky with a couple nice high end Ibanez Prestige’s and such along my journey, but this is for sure my favorite. The pickups are amazing, even thru my temp line 6 solid state amp. They are better versions of EMG’s, and the passive voicing is really nice. Immediately had access to all sorts of different tones, and it just feels and plays amazing. Plus the finish is gorgeous. The ONLY thing I will say is the middle pickup was getting in the way of picking, lowered it just a smidge and now it’s perfect.
Great video, tones and awesome playing. I am hoping one day you can make a video comparing the other high gain Fishman pickups like (Modern vs Devin Townsend pickups etc..) Thanks.
Thanks for this video! Can you please comment on the difference to the older (black) 2013 (?) model of that guitar (beside the different pick-ups and the sparkle finish)?
I want an 8 string one day, and this one is one of the top choices for me. Deciding between the higher priced Ibanez rg2228 or this one. Any suggestions?
It depends on two things. Neck feel and pickups. If you like clarity and a skinny neck. Ibanez. esp is a bit thicker than an Ibanez neck and the biggest difference is the fish man pickups.
Nice review! 8 strings aren't really my thing, but if I were to get one, this would probably be it. The riffs at 5:37 were really evocative of Deftones, good job. The "clean(ish) chords" section had almost a Toska feel to it. What is providing the little melody line behind the guitar, keys or another guitar with a lot of effects?
Thanks! That's just one guitar through Helix Native and an OH IR. I had some subtle chorus in front and after the amp (which was the 2204) and also some delay and reverb. The other music is just synths.
I love this guitar, nice review. One thing I find a bit confusing is that the active/passive pot has opposite configurations for the bridge and middle pickup. For the bridge, pull up for active, push down for passive - the middle pickup is the opposite, pull up for passive and push down for active. Mine is also extremely noisy, and I'm not sure if it's because of a wiring issue, the hot pickups, or the resonant body. But even minute tapping on the body - like BARELY touching the body - can be heard through the amp (even with the strings muted, because it's the body itself that's resonating). Lastly - I'd love to know more about what amp model, pedals, EQ, etc. you're using with your Helix! I'd buy your presets if they were available somewhere :) Thanks again for another awesome video!
What's weird is that just as with the bridge pickup the middle pickup is louder when pushed down. I haven't had any issues like you mentioned. I used badonk for the rhythm tones with the OH1-05 IR from the cab that I mentioned. No boost but just some pre eq in front of the amp. That's it! The crunchy clean is the 2204 amp with some effects. Same IR.
Id love to own this guitar the only thing that bugs me is the painted neck my hands tend to stick so it hinders my playing but if i ever get one ill take some sand paper to it to make it feel more satin since i wont plan on selling it

Good question I have about this guitar, would it be playable for a guitarist with smaller hands? I play a Universe 7 string so far have adjusted to the larger neck width and added string but noticed whenever I do attempt playing an 8 string my hands just aren't big enough to play it comfortably.
I’ve read a couple of reviews that mention rough fret edges on these. How was this one? And yes, this thing should absolutely come with an included case. Great job as always
Before you begin - and I won't be the least bit surprised if you've brought this up yourself - I hate where the pickup (selector) switch is. Other than that, the guitar looks incredible. Now, I'll listen to what you have to say...
One of the best-sounding 8strings on the market, nothing more to desire
From the best band ever, his 7 string tele is also epic.
I'm stuck between this and the H 1008 baritone evertune. Also I like the ibanez meshuggah signature
