Thanks for the comment! This is another instance of the same rule you see in εμβόλιο and παράλιο. In words that end with -ιο, like φυλάκια, the ια in the plural is pronounced -ι-α. Compare with φιλάκι-φιλάκια.
Around 6:00 with the "hidden consonant" discussion, the linguistic term for this is "Palatalization" because the sound of those consonants shifts towards the palate (center of the roof of the mouth).

This is an excellent video, and I'm very relieved to discover that I am not crazy, there actually are cases when the combinations are pronounced in different ways, depending... on so many things! I am only on my 27th day of trying to learn Greek from scratch using duolingo and easy greek, and I am still far away from being able to pronounce any of this correctly, I'm still painstakingly struggling with the alphabet, but it is good to know that one day will come when I can start to apply your tips.

Also, I thought what you said about the sounds being unconscious for native greek people was significant because it reminds me of how much we can absorb by hearing.

Don't use 'sympathetic' in this context. In German, you say "sympathisch", in French "sympathique " for being nice - in English "sympathetic" means something altogether different, more like being 'empathetic' - you feel for somebody else's problem/difficult situation this word is a FALSE FRIEND ! ..
Well that was interesting thx. I did wonder why sounds like ng as in άγγελος aren't always pronounced that way. I do think I personally prefer it if it is 😅 Cuz it makes the etymology a bit easier to understand and remember in relation to my own language. But good to know it's more common in Athenian dialects. Never thought much of παραλία being para-li-a and not *par-alja. Probably because Dutch pulls those sorts of things all the time as well xD

I did gloss over a bit by the time I got to that segment as, as warned, it's very advanced pronunciation and my general level is not that advanced. So I just watched that segment a dozen times more. If I got that right the trick is that the exception still applies despite the accent not being on iota? So εμβόλιο ending in li-o and not -lja. Which google translate gets wrong then, but that's not surprising and I take its translations and pronunciations with a pinch of salt anyway. I know this episode was rather tough... As I mentioned in the video as well, this video is a bit more advanced. If you're just starting out I wouldn't worry about it too much right now, you can come back to this video later. Is there anything in particular I could help you with or clarify for you?
Yes it is, specially in the beginning. Greek phonology is hard but it can be mastered. Also, this is a video for more advanced sounds and patterns so if you are in the beginning, you can skip it. The good thing is that Greeks are amazing when it comes to music so you can listen to the way they pronounce the words in a more clear way. You can use their music because when they sing, they tend to pronounce the sounds more clearly, compared to when they speak because Greeks speak fast and the phonology couldn't be heard so much for the untrained ear. I personally recommend older Greek music (not folklore music because there you go in dialects territory which is it's own can of worms) for that exercise. It is also fun! What I was doing personally is that I was listening to the songs together with the lyrics and I was memorizing how exactly the words sound. I was also repeating them as they were sang by the artists themselves. After some time I started analyzing the sounds and started to hear the patterns myself. This exercise helped me a lot to understand the sounds and the musicality of the Greek language. The reason why I mention this is because the singers were overpronouncing the phonemes because of the limitations of the recording technology at the time. I don't recommend younger artists like Greek rappers or trappers because they tend to mumble which is not good for learning Greek phonology since they follow a global musical trend that has been around in the last 10 something years. With some trial and error, you will learn and eventionally you will start to hear the small hidden χ in the word "ποιος" and many many more.

There's no rule when lia is li-a and when it's lja. It's easier to learn it by heart word by word.

Καμία σχέση. Οι περισσότεροι ομιλητές το λένε με απερρίνωση. Είναι ξεκάθαρα θέμα προσωπικού ύφους. Καθαρευουσιανισμός η αναφορά στο δήθεν σωστό.
Σε οποιαδήποτε σχολή θεάτρου κι αν πάτε, οι κανονισμοί είναι αυτοί που ανέφερα. Καθαρευουσιάνοι οι ηθοποιοί; Έτσι είναι, αν έτσι νομίζετε
