My son graduates from high school today. Class of 2018. I've been a single mum for 15 years. This was the first song that popped in my head. I used to jam to this in the 1990's. Great message. Great music. Here's to freedom for this old goat single mum. We both get freedom now! It's a great time. I'm going to listen to this song 20 times today in celebration.
I remember buying this single after school. Running home and playing it full blast in the living room. My mam came back from work and absolutely bollocked me as she could hear it from the car. Happy days. I was 28 years old.... Great band.
When I got kicked out on my birthday for turning 18 years old, this song came on the radio as I drove away from Hell. That was the BEST Birthday present I could ever have; Freedom! By any means necessary, retain your rights; fight for it. Do not let anybody con you out of it, either. Watch Boyz n Da Hood, again. Tre's Dad was not playing about what not to join. The point is: Do NOT allow yourself to be property. Enjoy. Love your life and please, do not be afraid to live. Thanks for the memory!
Chico Science, bem lembrado.
This song is one of my favorites, not only bc ridiculous nostalgia, but bc DAAAMMMN how can you put this song on and NOT rock out 👍 We've all had this feeling at some point in our lives and there is nothing else like it😘❤️🎉👍
I woke up at 6am the other morning with this song in my head and had to come find it. (easier to find it here that dig out my cassette :) ) This song puts me in the best mood. Life rocks!
Found this on popdose's list of 100 greatest cover songs. I'm a major Stones fan and I hadn't heard the Soup Dragons much before; I like it a lot. The cover definitely adds in the funk and the backup singers in the chorus are perfect. Nice stuff. Stones covers seem best when they don't try and match the dirty and grungy feel of classic Stones and just make the song work for them. This one definitely fits!
+Rennita Monsen Thank you so much for this comment. It was driving me up the wall trying to figure out where I heard this before. Now I remember it was because it was from the TMNT VHS tape I used to watch a billion times! I had no idea the title changed to "Big Girls Don't Cry..." instead of Step Kids. This brings back memories for sure.
Same here! I was watching the step on video just now and even though I only knew free from some tv commercials the happy mondays song immediately reminded me of the soup dragon one!
i have a hair salon in dublin...and a mate i havent seen in ages called in with his hair like these dudes....and it was refreshing.......the 90s rocked.
This is part of that whole sound of my generation, we had pure electronica dance music kids n indie kids and soup dragons and happy mondays broke down the barriers
it had its time, we love it and we move on.....still love to hear this screamadelica lsd stuff and it has stood the test of time along with a lot of the music in that period. nice grooves, good sentiment and a free good factor...all good to me
mY GOODNESS!! Brings me back to my Erasmus term in Newcastle upon Tyne. Glorious time! "The Boat" disco. I'm sure my mates will remember it and songs like this we heard and danced there.
I remember when upon hearing this at the age of 10 music became really exciting and this sounded like the future, the sun shone bright and the rebellion in music became one with love on its sleeve..,The Mondays, Roses, The Scream et al, made that moment feel like forever and thats why the beauty of those days will never age or fade
Hahahahaha I haven't heard this or seen this video for a million years. This is one of my favorite tunes ever :) Thanx! :) I'm happy now, And I'm free :)
This song must be a mindfuck for any foreigners who still think we Scots walk around in kilts with bowls of porridge. Mind you, I quite like a bit of porridge.
I'm probably going to piss some people off with what I'm going to write but I don't give a shit; it needs to be said! Here it goes: When the Soup Dragons album "Lovegod" came out in the summer of 1990 I thought wow, this (as well as a few other alternative/post-modern acts) was going to be the defining sound of the 1990's and I really looked forward to it. The 80's was over and most pop and hair metal bands had run their course and change was in the air. Then came Nirvana the very next year with its bipolar doom and gloom angst-filled whining about his dull depressive life, then things really took a shit! Virtually every band like the Soup Dragons was gone by the mid 90's all in favor of this grunge bullshit (or what I call Seattle sewer music) only to be topped off by Kurt Cobain putting buckshot through his head a few years later! I'll confess, I to embraced grunge at first but after a year or two I had to put it down. Grunge killed off many great bands like the Soup Dragons and the after shocks can still be felt to this day in much of the talentless bullshit we see on TV! Sorry, but grunge was to music what Charles Manson was to female guidance counseling!
Phayzyre105 Yeah, this music makes me feel happy and I question the validity of grunge when the philosophy of its greatest exponent was suicidal, bi polar, self hate, world hate and many more negatives. Not least that it was terrible!
Iain Harris Amen Iain. Apart from being the suicide capital of the USA the city of Seattle is for all practical purposes a shithole! Twice I had to go there for job related purposes but I would never live in that gray dull dreary depressive hell. And speaking of Seattle and music....a buddy of mine went there a few years ago and he told me that if you thought that grunge sucked back then the music scene really sucks in Seattle now! He saw one act and said "it was a freak-show deluxe with everything from performers jumping around on stage in their underwear screaming incoherent vocals into a microphone over loud over-distorted guitars; shoving beer bottles up their asses and smearing chocolate and (what appeared to be) feces all over their bodies!" He immediately left after witnessing that; I would've also! All I could think was damn, people actually pay money to watch that bullshit!?? No thanks, I'd rather watch paint dry than to see that!
Phayzyre105 Seattle sounds like it sucks! The music scene there sounds like it has devolved further! Maybe they could take it to another level and start cutting off their genitals and throwing them to the audience (could only do that once) and do a bit of general self-mutilation! Yeah, rock n roll, man! Now the music we're into is about positivity, love, fun, freedom, having a ball. That's what I want from music. I feel bad for Kurt, he was messed up, but is being messed up and glorifying angst a good message for this already messed up world? Did it inspire angst-ridden teenagers to take their misery a step further? I knew someone who said he was Gothic and had 'Gothic moods' and would sit in room and cut himself, dreary music as a backdrop. 90's went from being the ecstasy of Soup Dragons, Happy Mondays, Primal Scream, The Farm et al to that misery. A lot of my friends were into Nirvana so I had to put up with it more than I would have liked, some Britpop bands brought back some of the jolly spirit of said bands, but how cool the Nineties would have been without Grunge!
i remember when this song came out, listening to it on the beach near a place called yamba with my friends , wasted, feeling like i was sinking into the sand, stars above, bonfire not far away and the waves breaking on the sand. why wouldnt Gary King want to capture that again, if i could I would. Long Live all the Gary Kings of the world. Dont be afraid to feel freedom.
August of 1990; Cambridge, England at the Studio School. Irak invaded Kuwait. A bunch of classmates from Kuwait took this song as their national anthem! GREAT SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHERE ARE YOU SAUD AL-RASHED?????? Still missing U

Did you play this while you were next to a railroad? Can you imagine that band doing a music video of that song next to one?

My theme song after my divorce was final. It was a huge party, and we blared the Soup Dragons!!
Decree Absolute is a wonderful thing. It's the enforcement of the injunction order that's the problem.
How come divorce costs so much? Because it's worth it!
Hee hee - COOL!!! dj
This is my theme for my divorce (liberation) party celebration.
ahhh....the things that make the heart grow stronger...
It was such a treat to hear this song on SiriusXM. Almost 30 years now and I still remember it from the trailer for Step-Kids.

What old souls with such a groovy sound oh yeah ❤️ Been my happy song for many years! ❣️
As much as I love the Rolling Stones, I like this version much better than the original.
It's been years since i heard this. Love it.
I was born in 1988, and heard this song when it first came out because of my aunt. Funny how everything in life comes full circle...

Same here! I was watching the step on video just now and even though I only knew free from some tv commercials the happy mondays song immediately reminded me of the soup dragon one!
I played this cassette from start to finish again and again and again until it sadly disintegrated. I was free to do what i want. So I did.

Gary King has a working cassette. Maybe you can dub a copy from him.
Sounds like you weren't afraid of your freedom 👍
i have a hair salon in dublin...and a mate i havent seen in ages called in with his hair like these dudes....and it was refreshing.......the 90s rocked.
This is an original Rolling Stones song written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, back in 1965.

The Stones did it better than anybody.

This song must be a mindfuck for any foreigners who still think we Scots walk around in kilts with bowls of porridge. Mind you, I quite like a bit of porridge.
Rob Fraser
The kilt is rather sexy to me .
How bout them bagpipes?😁
Scott’s eat porridge?
I grew long hair to be like these people in the past when I was in my late teens. Love it!
I'm probably going to piss some people off with what I'm going to write but I don't give a shit; it needs to be said! Here it goes:

Totally agree. This is pure joy hated miserable (bi-polar, spot on!) grunge! This type of music was what made my youth!
Iain Harris Just calling it the way I see it my friend! Grunge will (for me) forever be an indelible stain on great music.
Saw the Soup Dragons at the Theatre of Living Arts in Philly. One of the best shows!
i'm not free but i try to be all time and it's a realy hard job i can tell you
i remember when this song came out, listening to it on the beach near a place called yamba with my friends , wasted, feeling like i was sinking into the sand, stars above, bonfire not far away and the waves breaking on the sand. why wouldnt Gary King want to capture that again, if i could I would. Long Live all the Gary Kings of the world.
Dont be afraid to feel freedom.
And anyway, I not scared of admitting the Clangers spawned the soup dragon!
My sister had a clanger collection. I use to abuse them, she would abuse me.
