yes! my scuds also eat every plant i give them and are great for creating greenwater. i've seen a few videos where others have used them specifically for this purpose and my own scud culture is a fabulous source of greenwater.
These are not shrimps but rather fresh water aquatic isopods, their land dwelling cousins are called rolly pollies, pill bugs, and sow bugs. They are only distantly related to crustaceans (shrimp lobsters, crabs,)and belong to the Arthropod family. They may be more closely related to Trilobites and horseshoe crabs. They do have a deep sea cousin that can get up to a meter long. It lives on the ocean floor eating any organic decaying and dead matter it can find.
Scuds thrive in all my aquariums with fish and without. Room temperature and indirect sunlight. The baby scuds feed on algae. The adult scuds feed on any and all food. Here is a playlist of my videos about scuds: ruclips.net/video/JPhvcTBTl_g/видео.html
This is fascinating. Could someone help me identify what I have in my experiment fish tank? I filled it with pond water and thought I had scuds, but they don’t look the same. Thanks 👍
I use iNaturalist app for this purpose. Take pictures of those critters (up to 4 pics) and run it through this app. It would give you some suggestions and there are people with knowledge on this matter that can help too ;) Here is a video about this app: ruclips.net/video/9Pk3yDkAjNI/видео.html
Showing just to show makes no much sense to me. However, I do show most of my aquariums in videos where I explain aquarium care - light in particular. So, in those videos you can see my aquarium stand with a couple dozen aquariums on it as I keep it - not just for recording videos if that is what you want to see ;) Here is the latest video where it's all showing at the end: ruclips.net/video/WiNcCY4GdS0/видео.html
Scuds usually move around...I've seen them stay still (resting I suppose) hanging on plants. I could not see what they do on the bottom of the aquarium covered with gravel, unless they get between the wall and the gravel.
Does detritis from scuds produce high amonia concentrations and evetually kill them? Can I keep than without duckweed in the tank, changing water once a week?
Bacteria, algae, aquatic plants and plants growing with roots in water seem to be doing fine job keeping healthy balance in my aquariums with scuds. Ammonia certainly did not spike high enough in my settings to kill scuds. You can use any aquatic plants - duckweed is just one of those that I've been using. I don't change water in my aquariums. So. I cannot tell you for sure if changing water once a week will do any good in this regards. Try and see how it works for you either way ;) All the best on your adventure!

What do you use algae (greenwater) for?

Freshwater shrimp are amongst my favorites.

I like cherry shrimp for that matter.
i think you should add more in water root plants, so the water doesnt get as cloudy for easier viewing also to see if they will eat some of the root
I have more videos coming about scuds and...I don't want to spoil it - you will see it all this Summer ;)
Do scuds eat hair algae?
Not really. They would eat it only if there is nothing else to chew on.
Nice 👍
Thank you!

About scuds, what is the temperature, food, environment and sunlight do I give to them?

@@4me 👍
Do they need a light or normal room light will do just fine?
All my aquariums get only indirect sun light coming from the window - seems to be enough for scuds, plants, fish and everything else.
Where can I find scuds in nature?
You may be able to find them during warm season in lakes and ponds. I have not seen them in New York yet. But they should be here too.
@@4me Are they found in rivers?
@@filamas Yes. Warm season is the best time to look for them as it is for most critters.
😍

Is it normal that they lay on the bottom of the aquarium on one side and move their little legs?

Are scuds terrestrial ?
I keep scuds Gammarus. They are aquatic.
Do you think they would eat blanched veggies?
They eat everything!
Are your scuds still alive?
Yes. I have small populations of scuds in each aquarium with fish. I stopped culturing Scuds in separate from fish tanks a couple years ago.
I suspect they prefer dying plant matter over live plants not aquarium plants vs terrestrial
It seems so about dying plants.
