With Russ McKinnon's simpler approach on the kit, Rocco really shines on this date.I'm a huge Garibaldi fan but Russ does a great job with a very deep pocket.
Love this video. Amazing that everyone is doing the show in the front while Rocco is humbly soloing in the background without disrupting the rhythm. I`ll miss him...
tommy was , but there was only one lenny Williams , the background vocals these guys did on " your still a young man " are outstanding . they are often overlooked and they have always been terrific . ONE OF THE GREATEST GROUPS OF ALL TIME , !
@@chrisinfiesto835 I've seen them almost 100 times. Had many conversations with Rocco. What a nice guy. Not bad of a bass player either-lol He's sorely missed.
This should be a required part of music class curriculum in public schools. How to get a large, talented group of individuals to put their egos aside and shine as one stellar unit. Fantastic band. Thank you for posting this.
A great line-up, 10 members - from L. to R.: Greg Adams (tumpet); LeeThornburg (trumpet); Stephen "Doc" Kupka (baritone sax); Steve Grove aka Euge Groove (tenor sax); Emilio Castillo (tenor sax); Tom Bowes (lead vocals); Russ McKinnon (drums); Francis "Rocco" Prestia (bass); Carmen Grillo (guitar); Nick Milo (Keyboards).
This is from my favorite TOP album (Monster On A Leash). I have East Bay Grease and Tower of Power (with "What Is Hip?"), too, but this was my first. I love Toms Bowes' voice. I also enjoyed Russ McKinnon's drumming on this album. My only time seeing them live was on this (MOL) tour. Emilio's not a bad singer, either.
I was there & backstage, too & Onstage on this moving stage lift ramp on left side when Tom Fogerty performed Center field, they brought up about a dozen people for a song or two then another Group,Bob Hope was there too. 17 hour Concert Event after '89 Earthquake Disaster benefit show. Lydia & Cold Blood too. It was Super, under the circumstances of the situation.
with multiple pieces and parts , this band has always been outstanding , what gets missed are the terrific background vocals , just so right . and kim , there is only 1 dave garibaldi ,
Peggy , in my haste , tom was really good , under rated , like drummer083 says , but had a chance to see these guys , I think it was 1972-1973 at the Cleveland agora , the old one on east 24th street near Cleveland state university …… they were unbelievable, also saw " cold blood " down there ….another terrific under rated group , Lydia p was a killer .
I agree … Compare him to the stick of wood they have fronting the band in 2022. It’s embarrassing. He’s like Perry Como in contrast to Tom … LOL … Tom could really move and put a lot of energy out …
Robert Oetojo that’s pure passion and an incredible gift of a voice. Trust me, to sound that smooth you not only gotta stay off of chemical substances, but you gotta take really good care of those vocal chords, eat right and sleep right. It’s a fragile instrument.
True, but the song had been around longer than that. There's a clip on here of the horn section [with a painfully-thin Emilio on lead vocals] performing the song on Letterman in 1987 [Letterman holds up their then-current "Power" album during his introduction].
Sounds great to me.I'm not a keyboard player but If there is one thing that should have been better it would be the Organ. Nothing beats a B3 and a Leslie especially not one of the crappy DX7 type of keyboards that a lot of guys were using back then.. But I understand the logistics of touring with a B3 setup. And Bruce Conte is still my favorite guitar player the band has ever had. Les Paul/ clean tone. Jazz phrasing instead of overdriven rock licks. That would be a better fit for my taste I think the guys are playing their butts off. It's just that the 80s costumes are pretty goofy by today,s standards and they make them look less serious than the heavyweight players they were.
Not sure where they dug up the lead trumpet, but he was an embarrassment. Total disaster at end of You're Still A Young Man and covered up his pitch problems by shaking and smearing notes, especially in What Is Hip. Emilio must have been pissed.
Are you for real man? When Tower reformed with this new young band and new material it put them back on the map! I saw this basic lineup at least 4 times in the early 90s and they really kicked ass! I know Lenny Williams blah, blah, blah. He left TOP in the 70s. People need to get over that and enjoy each iteration of the band.
I thought Tommy Bowes was so underrated as a TOP frontman. Thanks for posting
Underrated by who? He did fine by me.
He wss Amazing!
He's my favorite TOP singer
@@hexedra2000 hes 3rd behind Lenny Williams and Larry Braggs. Marcus Scott at 4th.
Saw him with TOP at Slims. He was strong
33 years ago....Still searching for What iz Hip. Just saw Tower of Power last week in Monterey...Ca. Times change...But Hip is FOREVER.

Interesting incarnation of TOP. Always funky no matter who is in the band!

Agreed
Rick Stevens owns Your Still a Young Man.

Love Tommy's voice; great band of course; thanks for posting this!
Super groupe de R & B le meilleur pour moi. Je l’ai vu 3 fois en concert. A plus JOËL
Man, that Rocco Prestia can jam! Holy crap! Wow!
Listening 2 this; u can really hear him running up & down that neck! RIP Rocco 😔🙏🏼💜🙏🏼

ROCCO!

Love me some Tower of Power!
Rocco's licks on this tune are from another world! Dig it!
Emilio is the man!!
I wish they had more shots of rocco going off on his bass!
my thoughts exactly
Rocco sounded like he was having a good day.
Thank you for posting this great concert.
The tower of the horns and the vocals!
Love Monster on a Leash! This version of the band still was tight as hell!
Tom Bowes on vocals!!!
larry Braggs and MR WILLIAMS MY FAVORITES for the front line
Love this group really!!
That blonde sax player I believe is Stephen Grove aka Euge Groove.
How did the video production manage to ignore F. R. Prestia that much all along ? I'd distribute some slaps.
,😂 agreed

The original Tower of Power members went to
Kennedy HIgh School in Fremont. They were Jody Lopez and Emilio Castillo.

These are SO TRUE❗LOVE ME SOME T.O.P.❗
Tommy was a darn good singer for the band.......
Down to The Night Club was my anthem.
Listen to Tom’s vocal on You’re Still a Young Man ❤

T.B. might be my favorite T.O.P. vocalist. Sad he wasn't with them very long.
Tom Bowes the best vocal of all time of TOP. Drive, professionalism, intonation, timing perfect vocal for TOP.
I agree … Compare him to the stick of wood they have fronting the band in 2022. It’s embarrassing. He’s like Perry Como in contrast to Tom … LOL … Tom could really move and put a lot of energy out …
Lenny Williams is number 1.
then
Larry Braggs
Tom Bowes
Marcus Scott
I like Tom, but have you ever seen Lenny Williams? To me Lenny was their quintessential front man. Just my opinion.
omg so MUCH ENERGY T. BOWES JUST LIKE HE IS ON STH.. BUT IAM SURE WAS NATURAL HIGH
Robert Oetojo that’s pure passion and an incredible gift of a voice. Trust me, to sound that smooth you not only gotta stay off of chemical substances, but you gotta take really good care of those vocal chords, eat right and sleep right. It’s a fragile instrument.
Wow!
My favorite lineup!! Energy beyond!!
So wat is name of lead singer in this concert...first time I've seen him...really good moves too...love the voice wow
Larry Watts -Tom Bowes; did 2 albums w/ TOP..... 🤙🏽😎
this was not 1989-more like 1991 or later.' believe it" didnt come out til the Monster on a leash album-1991

Anyone else notice that Carmen Grillo's pinky finger on his right hand is in a huge bandage?
Sonzão 💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃🇧🇷
It was a 17 Hour Loma Prieta Earthquake Benefit Concert with many bands,Cold Blood,too.,excellent,too.
I saw them in Manteca CA when they had this lineup.
Tom Bowes, my favorite lead singer .. that band is awesome LIVE!
Al Chez.🎺
Frederick Marylands Steve Grove on first tenor. Lee Thornberg on high trumpet.
McKinnon and Prestia shines, Wow!
If I am not mistaken this was a concert for the 1989 Bay Area relief - I was in Santa Clara watching this on one of the local stations

Sounded good to me,in da 4th row.
Been following TOP since I saw them open 4 The Doobie Bros back intone summer of '73 & in my opinion; Tom Bowes was the best front man so far! 🤙🏽
We should appreciate the great stage presence of Lenny Williams and Larry Braggs too.
I was there.-(Da4throwkid)
let me just say your all badd ass just wish you guys would sing sparkling in the sand
and clever girl a lot
more often lol.
I don't know which trumpet player was playing the solo at 13:58 but he had a hard time !
Steve Grove(Euge Groove) on lead tenor...Russ McKinnon on drums...looks like Carmen Grillo on guitar...not sure if that's Lee Thornburg on trumpet....
Al Chez. Played with Paul S. on David Letterman for many years after ToP.
Looks Like one of Lee Thornbird's first performances with the band. Notice the music stand.
+cberry42 But Lee was with TOP by 1987.
+cberry42 It actually looks like Al Chez, not Lee Thornburg
I think Tom bowes is a very good singer for a White Guy I think he has a lot of soul he's very entertaining lots of good Showmanship
yeah its al chez
C Johnson its NOT!
17:15
Is that Steve Moore on drums?!
Who is the trumpet player with Greg Adams?
Lee Thornburg
who drumming on this crew? not david..
Russ McKinnon. Went on to work with Barry Manilow among others.
The lead singer looks like the villain from karate kid 3
a1 drummer but not david G

The Lead Singer didn't he play in the Karate Kid part 2 as the Karate Instructor ?
p that would be a negatory. Tommy is a great singer but as far as I know for the 10 plus years I have known him he has never been in any movies
Somethings off about this era for TOP. Vibes off. Granted, the mix is horrible here but Im only 'digging' Rocco and the horn section.
We're you there,?I was and it was excellent.
