Strange F800GS problem

  • I recently purchased a G650 XChallenge, so I haven't used my 800GS for about a week. This evening my 800GS didn't want to start.
It eventually started when I opened the throttle completely while pressing the starter button, fuel pump and/or pump electronics maybe ?
Went for a ride and all was fine, but now every time I start it, it hesitates for a second, whole dash goes dead, then try to spin the dials the wrong way, starts up and then seem to do another "computer check" ? Computer looks a little confused ?
Been serviced probably around Feb/March this year .. so according to mileage it says it needs another service, but not due for an "annual service"
About 40k miles on the clock.
    Any ideas ?
Maybe jealousy and depressed now that I bought an XChallenge ;)
*UPDATE* ... was my stator/alternator in the end not charging the batteries ... more info: www.ukgser.com/...

the manual for 2008-2012 model does not say that two dots are only for quick warm up of the heated grips. so it is only the case for 2013- model

I've heard of people having problems like this because of old kinked vac. hoses to the throttle bodies from the idle control valve. Should be behind the airbox, but if you take a look and they are kinked, you can shorten them up and bit and it will idle better.

stator is in the engine on the opposite side of the clutch (at least on this motorcycle) that generates electricity that charges the battery. There is a flywheel that spins around the stator when the engine is running which generates the electricity.

  • @andreels
    @andreels  11 лет назад +5

yes, was battery, but the root cause was a faulty stator not charging the battery.

(Sorry for my english level. I am not english)
I had the same problem when having low battery. Only that. Your bike works well. Try a long ride. One better solution (in addition to the previous one) is one battery charger/maintainer. It keeps the battery charged during the long periods of time the bike is not used. It cost 100 euro (aprox), but indeed it is one of the best investments. I have the "optimate 4 dual programm" for 10 years ago. In Amazon, 60 euro. The best perchas ever made to maintain the three motos we have in our family. I hope this message helped you, my friend. But the most important: your moto has not any problem. Keep the battery full of charge and that's it. Ah, and keep also your fuel tank full of fuel. It also helps cocina with other kind of problems.

haha, yes I see, could also be the rectifier. There are other checks you could do to. think i have outlined what I've done in the ukgser thread in my video description. If it is your stator, much cheaper to get the rewounded than buying a whole new unit from BMW. good luck !

Test the battery with a multimeter. If the voltage is around 12,5-13,5 with the engine turned off, your battery is charged.
Then start your engine and test the battery again with a multimeter. If the voltage goes up to more than 14,4 (or up to 19-20v) you have a regulator malfunction. Replace it and test again.
Does it blow the light bulbs?

Of recent, last three months, I have this same problem and not only at start up. The engine would shut off as I'm on the freeway at per se, 70 mph. I'd press the starter as I'm coasting and the engine would run again same as nothing happened. It happens once or twice per day. And yes I just replaced head light bulb. The bike F 800 gs 2011 got tested about a week ago ( End of September 2018) in BMW Burbank, but the chief of service told me that the computer had NOT showed him any error codes. I have over 44K miles, is that about the time when Regulator/alternative current rectifier needs replacement?! Thank you for your attention!

And is not my stator as I replaced it March this year 2018. The new stator and the new lithium Shorai battery work fine. Did the measurements on them.

Mine did exactly the same...the battery ran dead 3 times over a period of a year....could somewhat revive the battery but not completely...
With start up the voltage would drop below 10V thus causing the ref counter to cycle again....change the battery and problem sorted instantly...😊😊

If it hasn't been ridden for a while then the battery could have lost it's ability to hold charge. Try taking it out for a good LONG ride.
Dos the computer have an auxiliary battery? Try replacing it if it does.

welcome to the club. BMWs ain’t what they used to be before the introduction of the K bikes. it’s not just German motorcycles. Just look at the cars problems. Look at Volkswagen. They’ve been fined over $1 billion for knowingly cheating on emissions tests. Look at a BMW car. When you take that thing to the dealer for a “mileage routine service check” you better be sitting down when they hand you the bill. Heaven help you if you have an issue.
i’ve had one BMW motorcycle of my dozens and dozens of motorcycles over the decades. I thought I deserved to have the best at least once. Boy was I wrong. I am never going out on that limb again.
Long time buddy since high school back in the 70s loved BMW convertibles. He was buying returned lease vehicles to error three years old. He would buy the extended warranty from some warranty company.
on one of his BMWs, the roof would not go up. Not covered, $3800 out of pocket.
his drivers seat frame broke. Not covered, $900 out of pocket.
drivers power window stopped working. Unknown cost to me, not covered.
The automatic transmission shift knob/that comes up through the floor between the front seats can be put into a manual mode so you can manually shift the gears.. not covered, they were all breaking, so they were on backorder, not even salvage yards. Had any left to sell.
his battery went. This was before battery prices went through the roof around 2016. The battery cost over $300. Because it was for a very special car, a BMW.
he would take the car into the dealership for routine maintenance schedule, he never got out of there without spending at least $1500..
they would do things like flush brake fluid. They would charge for the labor, then they would charge for parts, then they would charge for shop materials, then they would charge a disposal fee, and then they would add sales tax.
The BMW motorcycle I had was a K 1200 LT. I called the dealer to ask how much it costs to have the brake and clutch fluid changed. Because that is very important on a motorcycle with ABS brakes that has a system like BMW with servo pumps controlled by a computer that send the brake fluid to the calipers. I’ve never had a motorcycle that does that. And there were warnings that if I get air in the system, the brake system completely shuts down. so don’t even think about attempting it yourself. That was the message on the Internet.
so I called the local BMW motorcycle dealer and asked how much just to change the brake fluid
$750 labor, plus parts, plus shop materials, plus disposal fee, plus tax, the first opening is about 45 days from now..
having been a motorcycle mechanic, I did the job myself. It took me about an hour because I had to learn how to do it. It cost me about six dollars for brake fluid, plus $34 for the very special BMW tool to work the slave cylinder bleeder port on the slave cylinder for the clutch. BMW is known for making very special tools that only the dealership has for certain jobs on BMW vehicles. As a matter fact, I know a BMW car mechanic. He said there is a running joke among people that work in the service departments of BMWs dealerships. That BMW is a company that makes tools, and cars to fit those tools. That guarantees you have to take your car to your dealer for service ..
they are pretty cars, very luxurious, they handle well they have good power, good brakes, but you have to marry the dealer when you’re on a BMW anything.
ewan mcgregor , The Star Wars actor, and a friend Charlie had a multi week, television series, entitled, long way round. They rode BMW, GS motorcycles around the world from England across Europe, across Mongolia and Russia, over to Alaska, don, across the United States, and back to England.
. they were schooled on what it takes to do, basic maintenance on their motorcycles I believe that was at the factory or at one of the big dealers in England. Both riders were gearheads in real life, and they knew how to turn the wrenches and ride motorcycles. They had a chase van filled with spares and cameramen and supplies, they had a third motorcyclist that was a cameraman that rode with them.
they would get onto some of the roads that are pretty rough, mainly dirt roads it’s across Mongolia, the road of bones in Russia, and they kept falling over. And throughout that series, they kept saying, these are the wrong motorcycles for this trip…
In Mongolia, one of the machines had a brake problem. These machines have ABS brakes computer controlled. When there is an issue with either the front or the rear brakes, the system completely shuts down, and you have no brakes, front or rear. You cannot turn the ABS off, so you will have conventional normal breaks. after talking to engineers at the factory by satellite, telephone, trying to fix the problem whatever it was, they ended up loading that motorcycle onto an ox cart or something like that, and transporting it to the closest train station, and sent it back to England without brakes. They couldn’t fix it. They ended up buying a Jawa motorcycle locally in Mongolia, and gave it to the cameraman, and one of the main riders took the cameraman’s BMW. The cameraman was on that Jawa literally riding circles around them on those horrible roads. They remarked that that is the motorcycle they should’ve been riding, a Jawa not a BMW GS.
BMWs have become so complex, that the machine must be plugged into a diagnostics computer for servicing..
BMW motorcycles sure ain’t what they used to be, and I don’t know what the cars have become. My buddy that has had three BMW cars, was paying $155 a month for one of those car warranties. He spent over $12,000 out of pocket to fix things that were not covered by that warranty on those three BMWs. He had one after the other. .. There were many many things that broke on those BMWs that was covered by those extended warranties. But those were generally not very expensive repairs that they covered but not the big ones. things like a temperature sensor on the radiator, and ABS sensor on a rear wheel, a valve cover issue. I don’t know what it was exactly.
my friend still loves BMW convertibles, but he had to give them up because it was too expensive to keep them on the road. In 2018 he ended up buying a Chrysler minivan. He hasn’t even had to put air in the tires on that thing yet.. No problems at all after five years ownership of that minivan. Just tires filters and oil changes.

I've had the same problem for about 2 years now, it gets worst in winter. New battery didn't solve it. Did you manage to solve it?
My dealer suspected the starter, but couldn't remove it (completely stuck by corrosion, I drive everyday all year : rain+salt).
Today I pushed it out myself with an electric hammer, then I broke one of the long screws while opening it. I just ordered a new one : 371€! :-( I hope at least it solves the issue, so it stops losing consumption data after each reset.

  • @hankgs
    @hankgs 13 лет назад +1

BMW Factory batteries are notoriously short lived. Usually, there isn't even a turn of the starter, it just goes dead flat, without warning... Happened on my 07 rGS and it was still under warranty and I was given a new battery from the dealership :)

and the batteries ain't cheap either. if you have a volt meter, check the voltage on the battery terminals while the bike is running. if it gives you around 14+ volts, your stator should be fine.

Same issue on my F800ST 2009. Often I had to press hard on the starter switch to get it to start, then many times it tried like it was a dying battery with lengthy pauses before it would start. Solution is 1- Get the battery out and charge it fully over night then check it holds a charge. 2- clean the battery terminals. 3- Clean the battery lead ends super clean with sand paper to they shine 4- clean the starter / kill switch gear, unscrew it and blast in electrical cleaning spray 5- locate the starter motor behind the down pipes and clean the connections also with the spray. then see the difference!
