- Backpacking Australia East Coast 🇦🇺 Episode 8📍Ayr (SS Yongala)
Next stop on the Greyhound bus is Ayr. Not many backpackers stop here (in fact, I was the ONLY one on my bus that stopped here) but scuba diving fans will know that this is where to stop to dive the SS Yongala - one of the best wreck dives in the whole world. I stayed right next to Yongala Dive Shop at the Alva Beach Tourist Park.
This video was filmed in March 2023.

FAQ's
How do you afford to travel? - I now earn a full time living through creating these RUclips videos, affiliate links, selling digital products and my clothing line. I used to simply just work any temporary job I could find to save up to travel! I budget the money I earn meticulously to reach my savings goals using www.backpackin...
Is travelling solo safe? - I would argue the answer is almost always yes! As long as you use your common sense and you follow your own government's guidelines about travelling in that country. I have made several videos on backpacking safety on my channel.
Do you have plans to settle down? Yes, I'm currently saving to purchase my first property in the UK and I'd love to have children one day. I doubt I'll ever live a completely 'conventional' lifestyle by society's standards though, as I often have my own preferred way of doing things.

A GEM..! This vlog is definitely that.! The wait at the bus stop.! I even at one point felt transported into a classic western movie..the motorcycle ride..the sunset..you made a vlog in an ghost town a interesting..and I said this before..you have an unbelievable talent as a cinematographer. Those under water footages were topnotch. .! Congrats.!
Thank you so much 🥰🥰 this comment means a lot ❤️🥹
Beautiful dive. Thx for sharing!! 🎉🥳🎉
Hello Christianne, thank you for this video it was so calming! I have been watching lots of your Australia videos lately as I deeply miss this beautiful country. Thank you for sharing!
Hello! My pleasure ❤️ I’m so glad you enjoyed it ☺️
Ohmigosh, your dive footage was absolutely incredible! Loved the sublime soundtrack which matched the schools of barracuda perfectly! Honestly your vlogs would put any professional filmmaker to shame - just brilliant and enthralling content! 👏👏😎
Thank you so much 🥰🥰 your comment means a lot ❤️
Awesome video Christianne! Just got my working holiday granted yesterday and just wanted to thank you for all your incredible guidance and recommendations. I never would have had the confidence to say "I can actually do this" if it wasn't for your videos. Cheers love and happy travels!
That makes me sooo happy❤️❤️ well done!
Spectacular dive footage!
❤️❤️
Gorgeous!!
Excellent!
With your vlogs about Australia and precious Thailand vlogs you convinced me to learn to scuba dive! I’m going to learn it at divers den in cairns when I’m there!
Amazing 😍😍 I have a video scuba diving with divers den coming up at the end of the week!! 🥳 they are amazing
Most beautiful dive I have done
I am always blown away by the underwater footage you get but that was something else. So many fish and a turtle although how you didnt puke when that boat was bobbing is miraculous
Thank you so much! This location made shooting underwater very easy 😍
Hahaha honestly I’m shocked I didn’t puke either
@@BackpackingBananas i nearly went just watching the video
Which go pro is this and we’re you. Using a red filter?
@@magdajez GoPro Hero 11 and no red filter (but it has been colour graded in editing!)
Great video wonderful Christie!!! 💖
Thanks Sean ❤️
I'm watching this from Alva in Scotland (tiny village, sadly no coral reefs 😂), hello to my aussie counterparts!
HA, I knew it! This was my guess in the last video!! I was the only one who made a stop in Ayr as well😄 Had to wait quite a bit as well, guess this is just the Aussie way of living 😅🤙 Good to see, Steve is still there 😆 He was my instructor as well. The ride to the wreck and the break between dive 1 and 2 was quite bumpy, not gonna lie, but I got lucky and adjusted quite quickly 😅 The dive was just amazing and your video brought back so many good memories!! It was magical to dive right next to all these big, beautiful fish and the sea turtle 😍😍 Highly recommend this dive if anyone is interested! Worth a stop!
Sounds like we had a very similar experience! 😅❤️
Looks like you found a little gem of a spot there,
So glad to have stopped here 😍🤿
Love your vieos
Thanks 🥰
What mount do you use for your GoPro? Is it a selfie stick or something else?
When you dive like this, can you borrow an under water camera from the company or do you need a private gopro?
Hi Christianne! I loved seeing the waterline showing when going halfway and all the way underwater at the same time when you were going all the way underwater, and then seeing the waterline showing when coming all the way out of the water with you! I loved it!😘❤️💕🥰👍🙂👙🐠🌷🐳🐋😍💧💦🌊🐟🐬🌺🌸
I think you’d really love those GoPro domes, Thomas. Waterlines galore.
@@BackpackingBananas Yes I do! I also love your bikini swimsuit that you wear when your swimming underwater!❤️💕🥰🐳🐋👙🌷🐠😍💧🌊💦🐟🌺🐬🌸
Interesting intro and outro music... Loved the dive but did you spew? Lol
Thankfully I didn’t spew! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I went to Ayr when I was travelling in Australia in 2010. Literal tumbleweed blew in the road as soon as I stepped off the coach. Such a strange town, I thought I was in the middle of a deserted town in a Western film 😅 Town highlights KFC. Even the pub had saloon doors.
Hahahaha omg seeing a tumbleweed would’ve had me cackling sitting at that bus stop. It did feel like that ! 😂
What a great dive site 👍 if you wasn’t sure at first you would not say it was a ship wreck, I’ve had a few long rough RIB trips to dive sites in Egypt and they can batter you. Any more Scuba videos in Australia coming up ?
Yess! I have one more diving video on a liveaboard in the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns coming up in this series ☺️
@@BackpackingBananas great 👍 look forward to seeing what it’s like. we did a weeks diving in Oman and found it to be some of the best diving we have done, beats Egypt & the Maldives - the fish life seemed bigger and larger schools but less sharks for some reason ! Too bloody hot though 🥵
@@ahillvfr woweeee, I'd love to dive there one day!
Hi backpacking. Loving the series. Do you wear anything to protect your ears when going diving ? I know ear pressure is common when going deep, which can cause ear drum rupture or ear infections which in turn can cause hearing loss. Last thing you need is any of those. Your too young for a hearing aid or tinnitus. Protect at all costs. Best wishes guapa.
No, it’s not normal to wear ear protection (I’m not even sure if that exists) when scuba diving. You do have make sure you are descending steadily though and frequently equalising.
Love your videos! I'm going to Australia in 1 month! Can't wait. But I'm wondering, what SIM Card are you using for internet access all the time? :)
I have a pay-as-you-go Optus SIM ☺️
Did you shoot the underwater with a gopro with a dive case or another camera? the footage was stunning
Thank you! It was filmed on my GoPro Hero 11 with a dive casing and I colour graded the footage in Final Cut Pro ☺️
Weird seeing the bath tub in the hull take lot of wind cover jackets
Loveing coming with you, i was in ayr last week, just a wee but different, (not approprate, but good views lol ) thanks again
Have you ever dived the Monuments at Yonaguni island in Japan?
I’ve never been to Japan, that sounds amazing though! I should add to the bucket list 😎
What level dive do you need to be to do this dive?
Minimum Open Water with a deep orientation dive. (But ideally advanced with a bit of experience) as it can be quite a challenging dive.
Can they supply Nitrox 32?
Yes.
Probably you pickup driver was at the pub. 😂
the little shed room thingy you stayed in is called a donga here in aus.
I did not know that 😅
46 dollars sounds expensive for a dorm.?
🍌
The dive spot for wrecks is the Titanic, but let's not go there if ya know what i mean. 😜
Titanic is definitely not on the list for best wreck dives 💀
