The original song is not used in the process. I tab out the instrumental parts in Guitar Pro and throw the midi file into a program which gives it the 8-bit sound you hear - so no vocals are necessary!
I've listened to about 7, 8 BDM 8-bit songs till now, and what I've noticed is that I won't be surprised if they're played in dungeon maps or boss battles.
