On April 11th, 2023... The entire NHL changed with the outcome of one game. The Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins faced the Chicago Blackhawks in game 81 with playoff & draft lottery implications surrounding the entire game. With the chance at Connor Bedard on the line for the Blackhawks.. the outcome of this game would change the entire NHL as we know it.

Because Chicago wasn’t actually tanking. The players tried hard all year because of coach Luke Richardson. The players wanted to win every game and players didn’t actually wanna lose. We coulda taken guys out that were actually playing well like toews, athanasiou, raddysh, mrazek but Chicago didn’t unlike the ducks taking guys like zegras and Mictavish out of the lineup completely. Others were tanking, Chicago simply just sucked.

@@Blackhawkenjoyer Zegras (81GP) and McTavish (80GP) missed a combined three games last year. The Blackhawks absolutely, unquestionably tanked on purpose. Trading away young stars like Debrincat for three draft picks, trading away Kane, trading Dach, icing what was effectively an AHL team, etc. Like they tanked hard and purpose and got rewarded for it, just fucking own it. The fact that they are getting 1OA despite that fact and all the off-ice stuff with the Beach situation is absolutely fucked.
And I say this as a Sens who had no strong feelings about the Hawks or even skin in the game for the Bedard lottery.

      @Blackhawkenjoyer Год назад +12

@@mattfisher5402 trading players away is how you rebuild its not called tanking. At the end of the season those players were taken outta the lineup to lose on purpose weather it was 1 or 30 they still tried to lose. You must not know how rebuilding works. Trade away the older players to get good picks. And tanking is players and coaches legit losing on purpose. Huge difference. And stop acting like you care about Kyle beach because nobody said anything about 3 first rounders last year I went back and checked all the posts from than and nobody said shit.

Your team has multiple players with no image on the nhl site. Your team iced an AHL team while trading away your good players for no reason, and you got rewarded for it. Also, if you were to lose picks, it would've been this year. The three last year were traded to you do the league couldn't take them away. Also, sorry that Zegras and McTavish missed a combined 3 games, I'm sure that's really on purpose. Are you gonna attack Terry next for missing away games because his wife gave birth?

When people say they can't have an impact on the world around them , I always tell them they never know what their interactions with others will really do and you may never really know . The expansion San Jose Sharks in their playoff debut took down the president's trophy winning and soon to be Stanley Cup dynasty Detroit Red Wings in the 1st 8 seed over 1 seed in NHL history. Florida was a pretty good team that was a first place team just 2 seasons ago. The Sharks were a recent expansion team in an era where the league didn't reward you for being a new team like they do today. The Sharks were not anywhere near the caliber of team relative to the rest of the NHL that the Panthers are. That happened in '94.

My team wasn't even mentioned in the video, yet I suspect that this butterfly effect will affect them.
If the Penguins had won, then they would have been the worst-record playoff team, and thus in line for the 17th pick in the draft, pending the question of which teams make it to the conference finals (and thus automatically get the last four draft positions). If Pittsburgh was that fragile, then they probably would have lost to Boston in the first round, and stayed in 17th place in the lottery, unlike the Panthers who made the final four (and ultimately the final two), thus causing all twelve playoff teams that did not make the conference finals to move up a position in the draft.
My team is not one of those twelve teams, but the New York Islanders are. They had the second-worst playoff record among playoff teams, and were eliminated in the first round by Carolina. So they started with the 18th pick, but moved up to 17th because of this Panthers run which presumably wouldn't have happened if Pittsburgh had won against Chicago.
Why does this affect my team? Because the Islanders traded their first round draft pick to Vancouver, who later traded it to my team, the Detroit Red Wings.
Assuming that we ultimately select a player with the 17th pick (instead of trading it away yet again), then we will have to remember this game with respect to whatever success that drafted player has as a Red Wing, because if Pittsburgh had won then we would presumably be picking 18th instead, and that player might very well have been gone before our pick.

On behalf of the cities of Boston, Toronto, And Raleigh,
We can never and will never forgive the Pittsburgh Penguins for what they have allowed to take place the weeks and months following this game. All they had to do was beat a poverty draft lottery team, and they make the playoffs and save they're season. BUT NOPE! They really let a bottom feeder franchise take them out of playoff contention in one of the final games of the regular season.
And not only did you fail to make the postseason, but you have allowed the Florida Panthers to take your playoff spot, who would go on to... Knock out the historic record setting 65 win Boston Bruins in 7 games, Nearly sweep the first Toronto Maple Leafs team to win a playoff series since 2004, And hand Carolina their 3rd consecutive eastern conference final sweep.
This game will forever be a mark of overwhelming disappointment.

If the Leafs lost in the second round to the historic Bruins instead, they would not have fired Dubas rather than how they reacted by getting smoked by the eighth seeded Panthers. There is one fundamental flaw with the premise of this video. You don't seem to understand how the draft lottery works. Each team is assigned number combinations randomly, and the lower you finish, the more combinations you are awarded. Think of it like a regular lottery: the more tickets you have, the better your chances of winning.
If Chicago finished lower in the standings they simply would have had more number combinations allocated to them and it would not have made a difference in the outcome of the draft lottery.

Yea...no! Buddy had as much to do with changing the league...as I did! There's 82 games a season full of wins, losses, injuries and bounces. Some lucky, some unlucky!
Just like I taught my young players when coaching youth hockey, one call from a ref, one bounce lucky or not, doesn't decide games. What they do and don't do over 60 minutes or...in this case...over 82 games... Is what decides what happens. Just like in a game, it's full of chances and opportunities. Blowing a scoring chance, unforced turnovers, being lazy and not skating ur a$$ off to get back to the defensive zone....all are factors in the outcome of a game. It's never..... EVER...one play!
So no....Buddy had a good goal on a lucky bounce that had ZERO to do with Chicago winning the lottery.

Moreover, with Pittsburgh loosing, and Florida going to the playoffs instead, it changed the lottery % of Montreal to win the Connor Bedard lottery, as apparently, Montreal arrived second by 0,3% stats result behind Chicago. So in other words, if Pittsburgh would have won this game, Bedard would have been in Montreal. And following their own list, Montreal would have chosen Pellikka as defenceman with the 15th pick. They would not have Newhook, but would have chosen Quebecois Ethan Gauthier on early 2nd round. So that goal of Robinson changed history for Montreal, as that instead of Reinbacher and Newhook, they would have Bedard, Pellikka and Gauthier. Chicago would have had Mitchkov and Reinbacher would probably be ending in Arizona, leaving Philadelphie with Leonard and so on.

Arizona lost their 1st & 2nd round picks in 2020 for giving prospects physicals outside of offial NHL combine facilities. The Blackhawks cover up a rape of a player who was then harassed by players on the team over being a victim. (Nice leadership, Toews.) However, after all that came to light, they not only kept their 1st round pick, they got the 1st overall for a generational talent. Funny how when the Hawks sucked & the scandal came out, all the Chicago fans were outraged & very boldly declared no further support for the team. Fast forward where they watch Chicago get the 1st overall pick & there's a record-setting number of tickets sold immediately after the draft lottery announcement. The NHL dropped the ball on this. I guess Arizona isn't a big enough market to skirt violations on where prospects can be screened. The league takes a stand & says, "No, you dirty Coyotes! You will play by the rules!" An original 6 team in a market that the NHL sees as a cash cow gets the, "Dammit, Chicago, that's your one warning on covering up a rape & sitting back while your players torment the victim for being a victim. If you do it a few more times, we're taking your 6th & 7th round picks in the 2030 draft away. We're serious." Bettman making the NHL look like clowns again.

First time I've ever been happy of the result of the Penguins losing as a lifelong fan.
Bruins get embarassed by Florida (Bruins would have smoked the Penguins this year sadly) Florida beats Toronto and Florida loses to the Knights for the cup. Bruins are going to be a shamble next year. Penguins dump Hextall and Burke and get Dubas. It couldnt have worked out better unless Anaheim had got Bedard instead of fuckin Chicago.

This up there when a player for the Buffalo Bills in the 1970s where a playing dropped an easy touchdown pass in the last game of the season. This put the Bills in last place where they drafted OJ Simpson the next year. OJ met Nicole in Buffalo, OJ of course didn't do it, Rob Kardashian defended OJ, and today, all from the dropped touchdown pass, the Kardashians exist and "literally" doesn't mean literally anymore.

so many penguin fans crying this year about missing the playoffs by 1 point after having the longest streak in North American sports (although in 2015 they almost missed just 2 points ahead of Boston). They must feel like they've taken their success for granted lol and don't realize the might get back in next year or in 2025 we'll see.

I never buy the idea of 23 men, collectively trying to lose games so an organization they may or may not even be playing at in future seasons can get a good draft pick. I don't think that's how these people operate at all. They go out there to try to win every game they can and let the chips fall where they may.
Now maybe the coach can be convinced by the GM to pick a scuffed lineup, but once the players hit the ice, all bets are off. Those guys go out there to win. Period. Those 23 guys picked for the lineup, don't care about Bedard. They've got their own careers to care about.
And besides, as we know now; Bedard went to the Blackhawks regardless, and even if Chicago had lost this game, who knows, maybe Bedard is a duck instead.

Fun video ... with one flaw. Buddy's goal put the Hawks in third place and they drew the lucky lottery odds. BUT, the odds wouldn't have been affected by that goal. Say they lost. That doesn't mean Anaheim might have got the third best odds. So, while the goal ended up causing Pittsburgh to miss the playoffs, the goal had nothing to do with Chicago getting Bedard. The rest though, is fun to speculate on.

LOL! I thought only the Chicago media and fans saw this as a thing.
Career journeymen D man Buddy Robinson alters the course of hockey history by scoring one of a small handful of goals of his career.
There was a collective groan from Hawks fans when that puck went in, as this was seen as hurting their chances for the first overall pick.
We were watching jealously as Anaheim lost what, 13 straight to end the season?
Little did we know that the third worst record was the golden ticket in this years lottery.

Well as a pens fan this can be good and bad. Bad cuz the playoff streak ended but good that Heckstall and Burke are gone. That was ridiculous trading a 2nd for Grandlund who did nothing is so bad. Now with Dubas idk if I like him yet or not. We’ll see. I wanna see Sid Geno and Letang compete in their later years but idk if they will or not. Signing Jarry to a huge extension seems like a huge mistake. But we’ll see. I said that the whole playoffs. Florida shouldn’t have even made the playoffs and they almost won it all.

The Devils blowing a 3-1 lead in the last few minutes but then winning their final game of the season in the 2018-19 season in overtime. If they had lost that game they would have ended up picking 5th instead of 1st and Jack Hughes would be a LA King.

As a lifelong Pens fan, I can attest to the number of times some guy who should be selling marble countertops at Home Depot gets into the opposing crease and plays like Patrick Roy against Pittsburgh. I don't know if that happens a lot to other teams, but it happens to the Pens a lot, especially in the last few years.
