  • Just your ordinary, average week in the farms of New Zealand. An ad that stirred up a fuss at first, this word having not been uttered in a NZ commercial break before, but soon changed the meaning of "bugger" for the whole country forever. Australia would air this ad with no setbacks whatsoever. Directed by Tony Williams at Zero Filmes.

Oh, this never gets old, and it never will. I never could understand the furore; my mother grew up on the West Coast of the South Island and that word was just an ordinary part of their vocabulary. Halariously, beautifully done.

Would recommend the 'Toyota Hilux Bulls' advert if you haven't seen it. Another NZ classic.

The Toyota ads back then were brilliant. Sometimes the ads were more entertaining than the TV shows...

It's sad that over 100 people complained about the use of the word bugger but none of them complained about what happened to the cow.

The word bugger always meant this, but has a few other use cases. Its very versatile. The ad didn't change the meaning the word for the whole country. Stay in NZ for a few months and you'll find out what i mean pretty quickly.

    bugger在旧时指的是对男性那个.就是jijian.由此发展成后面对有这类行为的男性的称呼.
    而日文的八嘎「ばか(马鹿)」意思是混蛋,傻瓜,白痴,愚蠢等意思.
    两者只是同音而已,并没有文化上的渊源。

Google translates it as: "In the old days, it referred to men. It was jijian. From this, it developed into a name for men who have such behaviors.
In Japanese, "ばか (red deer)" means bastard, fool, idiot, stupid, etc.
The two are just homophonic, and have no cultural origin."

Yes Sherry but this is English, English language. There are no queers in Japan anyway. Bugger is used as an adjective and not a noun.

Ironically when it first aired in New Zealand, the NZ Broadcasting Standards Authority received numerous complaints in regard to the word "bugger" used in the advert. Fortunately the Complaints Authority ruled that in the context of the advert, it was unlikely to cause widespread offence. I believe Australians werent quite so uptight about it when it aired there. The registration history of XM7797, the Hilux in the advert, shows that it is still on the road.
