  • On September 18, 1971, the West Springfield Terriers varsity football team opened its season against the Tech Tigers at Clark Field. Within the first quarter, the Tigers first scored on a 25-yard pass from quarterback Willie Starks to Mike Clime. A successful two-point conversion by Starks game them an 8-0 lead. The Tigers scored again, this time in the second quarter, with a 19-yard pass by Starks to Eugene Blakely, giving them a 14-0 lead. The Terriers responded with a one-yard touchdown run by halfback Rich Bienia, making the score 14-6 at halftime.
    However, neither team was able to score in the second half of the game. Near the end of the fourth quarter, the Terriers made one last drive to try and tie the game. Quarterback Dennis Koziol was picked off at the 10-yard line, however, allowing the Tigers to run the clock out and win the game 14-6. The Terriers varsity football team finished their season with an 0-9 record.
