@@maingamer6846 Can't speak from a fan's perspective, but I had a blast and wanted to know more about Kamen Rider afterwards. I came away with the impression that Anno loves Kamen Rider maybe more than anything. It felt like a movie by a fan and for a fan. Apparently they added a second date for US theater screenings so hopefully more people will be able check it out. Hope you enjoy!
There's a bit missing about Kamen Rider's creation that I thought I'd share. There's a manga called The Men Who Made Kamen Rider that's a non-fiction manga made by Kenichi Muraeda and Oda Katsumi that details the story of how the original Kamen Rider television show was made and the story behind the men who created and worked on it such as Shotaro Ishinomori and Toei Producer Tohru Hirayama. From what I could gleem from from others that I have found talk it about online, Toru was appointed as Producer for a work order to create a new SF/Fantasy series called “Maskman K” for the Execs and he needed a designer so he sought out Ishinomori who was already a big name thanks to the success of Cyborg 009 and had a very busy schedule. In the first 30 minute meeting Ishinomori sketched up a hero design called Crossfire based on the pitch that Tohru loved and showed the Execs who also loved it. But Ishinomori would call back later saying he was having second thoughts saying it didn't feel right and reworked it a few more times. These designs included stuff like a lion themed hero with the fire Kanji on his forehead felt these ones were too safe and wanted something his own and showed Hirayama a modified Skull Man he did for Tv. But while Hirayama loved it, the Execs didn't and while he tried to convince them by pointing to Golden Bat, the Toei execs just thought it was too risky. Toru tired to shop around to get approval from networks but it just was not happening. So Ishinomori decided to keep trying but rework the concept and tone down the stuff that the execs didn’t like eventually landing on the iconic grasshopper inspired look that endures to this day.
These days KR is more of a means to sell toys, but still an engaging watch. It's essentially a soap opera intended for kids with surprisingly mature content by western standards. Really enjoying KR Revice so far. =)
No.... nowadays it's a soap opera intended for the kids' Mom. That's why they hire beautiful young actors these days. When I work as waiter in Tokyo, I literally did hear some moms having lunch talking about the drama of the previous night Kamen Rider's episode 😂
@@isabellajemica It was told because these days moms actually accompany their kids more while watching kamen rider so it's better to invest through the moms using handsome young actors in order to make them buying the kids, kamen rider toys. "Over the top laugh".....well, as a casual fan of Tokusatsu media, if I can enjoy Baltan Seijin "laugh", I can certainly enjoy the over the top laugh of Kamen Rider's monsters.😄 Great video, man. Keep up with the videos about the history of Tokusatsu shows.
Back in high school we had to do an essay about what super hero we think we portray as. I wrote my essay about Kamen rider. No body in my class know who Kamen rider was or is… only three people out of 20 something kinda know what Kamen riders are. I had to mention that there was an US adaption called Masked Rider which use a lot of fight scenes from the original Black RX and a few scenes from Zo and J…. Marvel and DC was all what my classmate know’s about. I felt like an outcast during my presentation lol.
That's very relatable for me. When I first mentioned the word "tokusatsu" in front of my class friends I had to repeat it for an amount of times because they kept asking me "what again?"
@ yeah still not a lot of people are aware of Tokusatsu yet but it’s getting there. When I did my presentation was back in 2001-2002. The internet wasn’t that great yet lol.
Very cool video. I love the Kamen Rider franchise. Agito in particular has one of the best storylines I’ve ever seen in Tokusatsu. Also, some of you may remember Hiroshi Fujioka as the legendary Segata Sanshiro!
I just recently got into Kamen Rider and so I wanted to go back and see where it came from. Needless to say I started watching the original 1971 series and boy does it not disappoint. Yes the special effects are dated but the original show has a ton of personality and heart. Upon my first viewing of the original series, I had no idea it’s subject matter and tone were going to be as dark and adult in theme. With that being said, I absolutely loved all of the amazing action, fight scenes, and the over the top campy villains. There’s just something special about the first Kamen Rider show that I can’t quite put my finger on. Regardless, I’m a certified fan of the franchise and since I started watching the original series I also took the time to watch Kamen Rider the First and Kamen Rider the Next. Both films retold an updated version of the origin story all the while giving us something we haven’t seen before. Still being new to the character, concept, and overall franchise, I have to say that there’s so much to like, see, and unpack while navigating through all of the different iterations of the character. I’m so glade I gave Kamen Rider a chance because it’s exactly the kind of thing I love to watch. I also have to say that I loved your video and I look forward to seeing the next one! Take care!
Great review. Also, given the way that Shocker's cyborgs/monsters are created I always headcanon'd their weird laughs as being a result of how broken their minds are after Shocker's brainwashing.
Also, the "broken minds" can be a result of not only body modification and brainwashing but the way these monsters are treated by the heads of Shoker. I don't really know if the series focused on it but in the original KR manga by Ishinomori the Great Leader often threatened to end their lives if they don't accomplish the orders given to them.
Hiroshi Fujioka's care and respect about the character he portrayed is underrated IMO. Until now, he sticks to it and doesn't think of it as a one-off thing to boost a career.
As a person who started watching kamen rider last month and has already finished 9 (zero-one, ex-aid, saber, kuuga, ryuki, den-o, w, ooo, and build) i can say that it is one of the best shows that i've ever watch and because of that i haven't even a single anime episode for 1 month now. So far build and ex-aid is my most favorite series and currently i'm watching zi-o (i just want to watch it already 😂) and i'm waiting every sunday for revice.
Good lord, man. Hope your eyes are ok. Oh, any hint on when KR Build will slow down a bit? Currently watching it after Zero-One and 000 and it’s reeeally fast compared to these two
This came out before I was born. My first rider was RX and that had me hooked forever on this. Thanks for the childhood memories. Watching it now as an adult really strikes me different but I can really understand why I loved it so much as a kid.
I remember when I first watched Kamen Rider I was young and randomly going through the channels and accidentily found the Kamen Rider Den-o: I'm Born! Movie. I was so captivated by it even though I did not understand what the characters were saying nor the context but I fell in love all the same. I'm still a fan of the series both good and bad it has this charm that does not go away even as I grow older.
These are very well written video essays. I just ordered the Kamen Rider Black blu ray set as my first foray into Kamen Rider and getting pumped watching these vids. Keep up the good work!
Kamen Rider was the last of the big three TV tokusatsu franchises I delved into, having been a fan of the Ultra series for years (as a result of my love for Godzilla & giant monster movies) and dabbling in Super Sentai after the original Japanese versions of the Heisei shows started getting US releases. But Rider has quickly become my favorite, due in large part to the charm, insanity, and creativity of the original run. It's a dark, delirious masterpiece that never fails to entertain. And Takeshi Hongo is pretty much the perfect hero.
I'm glad you included footage from the first episode I ever watched. Specifically Chameleon Man, and the whole Nazi Treasure situation. I just saw Shin Kamen Rider in the theater and honestly seeing the original opening on the Big Screen was AWESOME!
I recently watched episode 6 of Ultraseven, and it was basically, "Hey, we're about to tell a story about mankind having to commit genocide against another race over a misunderstanding in order to save itself in about 25 minutes, are you sure we can do justice to this intricate and crushing moral dilemma in under 25 minutes?" "Eh -- we'll wing it!" Everyone except Dan is just kind of like, "Oh well! They didn't pick up the phone!" The one alien who's left over tries to destroy the Earth so Ultraseven stops them and they run off into hiding. The episode ends with Dan hoping to see the alien again someday with a smile on his face like he didn't just watch billions of people die in the cold vacuum of space or narrowly prevent a bomb from drilling it's way into the Earth's core to destroy the planet earlier that day. I don't hate the episode, I understand what it was trying to do, and I'm much happier that they bit off more than they could chew with a plotline like this one instead of being too conservative -- but at the same time it sets the tone for what I'll be expecting from classic tokusatsu from now on.
Been a Kamen Rider fan since Ryuki came out. I should consider myself extremely lucky to somehow acquire a bootleg CD of that Hitler's treasure episode, it's absolutely legendary lmao Starting off with a heavily experimental production, the franchise found it's root at being extra just for the sake of being extra, while proudly telling self-indulgent grim tales. Recent installments being more CGI heavy and with all the loud and gaudy toys still somewhat carries on that spirit, although not quite as endearing as a micro-budget 70's TV show can be.
I have a bit of a theory regarding the situation with the introduction of Ichimonji. Given what happened BTS with Hongos actor getting injured from a stunt gone wrong, they were pressed for time and scrambled to make adjustments. The addition of that special agent character I'm guessing he was basically given all of Hongos lines, I think. Anyway, I think ichimonji was always meant to be part of the show, but further down the line. It's possible Ichimonji was meant to be an evil Rider that does battle against Hongo for several episodes before Hongo manages to break his conditioning and they become allies. But the injury of Hongos actor necessitated bring Ichimonji forward sooner, hence why him being rescued and freed from Shocker was all done offscreen. It's just speculation on my part as I have no evidence to back it up, but that's just what I think was intended to happen.
I grew up watching KR in asia as a kids. Never forget the distinct sound effects. The original show was charming and quirky. I remember that wanted the belt so bad.
6:25 for those who are wondering, those ladies are female shocker combatants, their role in shocker is to abduct those who would be augmented into shocker cyborgs or potential enemies of shocker.
Ah, the coffin episode. Where Hongo is behind Shocker, who have two of his friends, somehow gets to their secret destination ahead of them, uncovers the secret treasure coffin, dumps the treasure somewhere, puts himself into the coffin, reburies himself while STILL in the coffin, and makes sure it doesn't look recently disturbed, again still in the coffin. Or as one video puts it, the best ambush in history.
This was a very nice surprise to find on my recommendations feed. But it also reminded me that for some reason I still hadn’t subscribe to you even after watching some of your Ultraman videos back in the spring
Tokusatsu genre always an odd ball to the rest of the world. Too violence for kids but too childish for adult. I love it. I will wait for you to continue this video with Kamen Rider 2.0
So, I first got into Kamen Rider around a year ago, my friend wanted me to watch some episodes with him on discord, and honestly speaking I literally did not care, I thought it was going to be just japanese power rangers like Super Sentai... Boy how wrong I was, my first Kamen Rider was Gaim, and it did not let down, seeing Kouta's whole arc from a carefree teenager that does dance competitions to a god that controls helheim and found a whole planet for it to live was just really good, I loved Baron's and Micchi's storylines too, the suits were cool and the effects were awesome, plus the humor and faces Kouta makes were always funny to me, I was not prepared for what awaited me, Build was next and I thought, "Oh, I got so engaged with Gaim's characters, how could I possibly like the new ones in Build?" The first moment Sento appeared on screen, I was already in love with him. Banjou, Kazumin and Gentoku were the funniest characters and all had their own badass moments, It's actually the first time in a while I cried over a fictional character, both Kazumin's last party and Gentoku's final stand against Evolto were the greatest things I saw. Then we watched Double and immediately fell in love with Philip and Shotaro, While I didn't like Terui that much I loved how serious he was in a show where most of the time, comedy is the main topic following along a good storyline, Drive was my second favorite, the humor, the talking belt-san and enemies were good, Heart is a character I couldn't bring myself to hate, Brain was a mix, I loved and Hated him at the same time, Medic.... We don't talk about her, I hated her and actually felt happy when she died, though I must admit, it was a cool scene with Tridoron Overdrive and Ultimate Heart fighting against Banno's machine. Speaking of Banno, a really hateable and well written villain with a good implementation to the storyline. Mach and Chase were funny in their own right, Mach being the absolute obnoxious idiot, yet somehow one step ahead and Chase being a cold but just enemy at first and then becoming in my opinion, one of the best characters in the show was a surprise to me, I felt bad for his death and how it affected Gou's character, plus knowing Roidmude couldn't be remade almost made me cry, but he didn't die in vain as with his signal bike he helped Gou defeat his father. Currently halfway through Zi-O and thinking of watching Revice, Kabuto, Decade, Ex-Aid, Wizard and Fourze, though I don't know who to start with first.
6:46 Seeing that brings something to my mind: Imagine a Shocker worker, at home preparing for bed, looks out his window and sees those glowing eyes. He'd either react with shock O_O or groan with a "Really~!?"
Ichigo after punching the 100 shocker combat man Ichigo:you coming to fight like the 100000th time haven't you learn what will you no one all of your friends and allies you fight alongside will die think Jerry the shocker combat man think what will you have after 1 second Jerry the shocker combatman: I'll have my drip and my homies along side me Ichigo:......screams jumps away
currently watching the episodes, i mostly do it because the main hero looks so badass in his costume. that, and it is great for a quick laugh at some of the strangeness of it, but it is pretty fun so far
I really appreciate that most of Kamen Rider's attacks were just judo style throws over the shoulder. Definitely gonna have to fill this hole in my tokusatsu lexicon.
I remember Watching Kamen Rider Ryuki Back Then on Spacetoon I used to Call it Dragon Claw (مخلب التنين) Before knowing it has an actual Name which is Masked Rider, I also Remember watching a Gameplay Walkthrough Video of The Kamen Rider Agito PS1 Video Game On My old Tablet, Coming Back to This Series and Knowing That Agito and Ryuki were from The Same Franchise Made Me Get Shocked,And This was the Time I Became a Fan of This Series......Anyways Great Video I Will Be Waiting for more
ALL the sound was dubbed in those days. Every word of dialgoue, all the sound effects, everything because they didn't use sound cameras. And after the first few epiosdes it was a stuntman in that Kamenr Rider custome, in fact same guy did Kamen Rider, Kamen Rider V3, Kamen Rider X, Kamen Rider Amazon, Kamen Rider Stronger, Skyrider, Kamen Rider Super-1. And then in the ZX special he played the monster's human form. Of course when more than one Kamen Rider in a scene they had extra stuntmen but the main Rider was the same guy in each series.
I just finished the original series for the first time, and it roped me in more than I expected. The Ultraman influence is strong, but the original concepts it brought to the table still can be felt today, (like the magical girl transformations etc that you mentioned.) While it was an "all ages" series, kids to adults have loved it ever since, (including the adult otaku community.) 😎
I think the Showa-era Kamen Rider was the best, with the creepy villains' laughs, outrageous costumes, and low-budget special effects. It also showed how a cyborg like Takeshi Hongo could be heroic and compassionate at once. 😊👍🏍️🏍️
This is just me, probably, but for me, those "kaboom"-sounding sound effects whenever Kamen Rider lands a punch are like the auditory equivalent to the "POW! UGH!" flashes in the Adam West _Batman_ TV show.
This series is so fun man and later episodes really pay off seeing Ichimonji and Hongou together after watching so many solo hongou and ichimonji episodes is so damn hype

With Kamen Rider celebrating its 50th anniversary, like a certain green man from the future, let us IWAE and P.A.R.T.Y.

Heisei Kamen Riders are the best, especially Agito, Ryuki and Faiz. Meanwhile, Neo Heisei Kamen Riders are just trying to be more like Super Sentai
i teared up during the interview where Fujioka talked about his injury and rehab. Man is the Classiest of Class Acts. they just dont make Men like that anymore.
Kamen Rider Build is probably one of the best modern series right now and it also does the whole "Main character getting experimented on" that Kamen Rider 1971 did
i can definitely recommend it to both old and new fans
+ Sento Kiryu (Kamen Rider Build himself) is so fun
I like that series too

My first Kamen Rider was 01. Caught up on everything prior and am now enjoying Revice every week. In the mean time I watch Super Sentai.

No coz I'm i n the uk
Can't wait to see Anno's reimagening
After I'm doing watch most of the Ultra Series, Kamen Rider is definitely on my list
Now's the perfect time thanks to Zero-One coming out on Blui-Ray in Jan.
It's impossible to find 😢
These days KR is more of a means to sell toys, but still an engaging watch. It's essentially a soap opera intended for kids with surprisingly mature content by western standards. Really enjoying KR Revice so far. =)
No.... nowadays it's a soap opera intended for the kids' Mom. That's why they hire beautiful young actors these days. When I work as waiter in Tokyo, I literally did hear some moms having lunch talking about the drama of the previous night Kamen Rider's episode 😂

"Over the top laugh".....well, as a casual fan of Tokusatsu media, if I can enjoy Baltan Seijin "laugh", I can certainly enjoy the over the top laugh of Kamen Rider's monsters.😄
Great video, man. Keep up with the videos about the history of Tokusatsu shows.
I've always seen it as a shortcut to show how unstable the brainwash and rebuild of the shocker kaijin and grunt were
The Baltan laugh is great. It's also annoying which is why it's great to see Baltan get smacked out of laughing.
This a great Kamen Rider Introduction for new people!
I have loved kamen rider since ooo’s
Now here's Kamen Rider
Very cool video. I love the Kamen Rider franchise. Agito in particular has one of the best storylines I’ve ever seen in Tokusatsu.
Also, some of you may remember Hiroshi Fujioka as the legendary Segata Sanshiro!
Always found Agito quite dull honestly.
Bruh 9 season times 50 eps times 23 minutes? Jesus how do you have so much free time?
Good lord, man. Hope your eyes are ok. Oh, any hint on when KR Build will slow down a bit? Currently watching it after Zero-One and 000 and it’s reeeally fast compared to these two
@@ЕвгенийМихайлов-у4у For me it slows down when the war against Touto and Seito started, and when Sento's true identity is revealed.

This came out before I was born. My first rider was RX and that had me hooked forever on this. Thanks for the childhood memories. Watching it now as an adult really strikes me different but I can really understand why I loved it so much as a kid.
Kamen Rider is a joy to watch. If you are willing to take seriously what the show takes seriously, you will have a good time.
Kamen Rider is a real manly heroic story. Something men and boys need today.
I've watched some episodes of Kamen Rider out of order, and I love it. It's definitely on a must watch list for me.
I'm glad you included footage from the first episode I ever watched. Specifically Chameleon Man, and the whole Nazi Treasure situation. I just saw Shin Kamen Rider in the theater and honestly seeing the original opening on the Big Screen was AWESOME!
I recently watched episode 6 of Ultraseven, and it was basically,
"Hey, we're about to tell a story about mankind having to commit genocide against another race over a misunderstanding in order to save itself in about 25 minutes, are you sure we can do justice to this intricate and crushing moral dilemma in under 25 minutes?"
"Eh -- we'll wing it!"
Everyone except Dan is just kind of like, "Oh well! They didn't pick up the phone!"
The one alien who's left over tries to destroy the Earth so Ultraseven stops them and they run off into hiding.
Nah you got my attention from the amazing tittle and thumbnail

Been watching this series for almost fifteen years. Can't wait to show my children the power of justice!
Been a Kamen Rider fan since Ryuki came out.
I should consider myself extremely lucky to somehow acquire a bootleg CD of that Hitler's treasure episode, it's absolutely legendary lmao
Starting off with a heavily experimental production, the franchise found it's root at being extra just for the sake of being extra, while proudly telling self-indulgent grim tales.
Kamen Rider Decade is my Favourite Kamen Rider.
What I like in the old Kamen Rider was the music made by the late Shunsuke Kikuchi.
Not gonna lie but the villain laugh or scream got me goosebumps and it's still cool till this days. awesome vid man
Yeah, wondered when you would get around to this. One of my favorites. Next Space Giants/Ambassador Magma please.

this is the "REAL" Soul of Kamen rider. :')
I grew up in 80s in Thailand and god every kid I know loves Ramen Raiders and the Power Rangers from Japan like nothing else on TV. Good times.
Tokusatsu genre always an odd ball to the rest of the world. Too violence for kids but too childish for adult. I love it. I will wait for you to continue this video with Kamen Rider 2.0
Oh man did not expected the "You Died" screen! I've always wanted to get into Kamen Rider, now I have to!
That theme song will forever be a chad anthem.
Ichigo after punching the 100 shocker combat man
Ichigo:you coming to fight like the 100000th time haven't you learn what will you no one all of your friends and allies you fight alongside will die think Jerry the shocker combat man think what will you have after 1 second
Jerry the shocker combatman: I'll have my drip and my homies along side me
Ichigo:......screams jumps away
Can't wait for the next video on Kamen Rider. Great video
currently watching the episodes, i mostly do it because the main hero looks so badass in his costume. that, and it is great for a quick laugh at some of the strangeness of it, but it is pretty fun so far
I really appreciate that most of Kamen Rider's attacks were just judo style throws over the shoulder. Definitely gonna have to fill this hole in my tokusatsu lexicon.

The only Kamen Raider I ever watched was the silly American Masked one. But this does look awesome! Thanks for covering it man
Kamen Rider really is something legendary
Your Incredible for making this video about Kamen rider
I just finished the original series for the first time, and it roped me in more than I expected. The Ultraman influence is strong, but the original concepts it brought to the table still can be felt today, (like the magical girl transformations etc that you mentioned.) While it was an "all ages" series, kids to adults have loved it ever since, (including the adult otaku community.) 😎
the red scarf is quite legendary you can't lie ❤
It really is incredible
Kamen rider jumping people is the best jumping
