    As someone who has seen every single Kamen Rider series, I think an additional point of value to the film is how it incorporates not only elements from the Showa era, but Heisei and Reiwa as well. The secondary hero starting as an enemy/rival before joining the hero's side, a competent action female heroine, the personal relationships between the villain's faction, and the final boss being a kamen rider himself. All of this has been present in the last 5 series in some shape or form. So this film works as an encapsulation of everything Kamen Rider ever was and what it ever will be. It may not be all intentional, Hayato Ichimonji was a rival at first in the manga as you said, but whatever intentions there were, the movie ends up being this beautiful blend of all 3 eras of Kamen Rider into one. From the themes, character personalities and fight scenes.
    Every series has always been messy to some degree, every show has something that doesn't work quite well, be it the storytelling, the suits, the action, or the characters. But Kamen Rider is still awesome for the good each series has in spite of the flaws. So the 50th-anniversary celebration film being messy, but with a solid heart, perfectly represents what this franchise has always been. You need the drama and dark scenes, but you also need the wacky fight scenes, over-the-top characters, and general silliness to properly represent Kamen Rider on the big screen. And it's all here.

    • @Another_Hibiki
      @Another_Hibiki 7 месяцев назад +21

      To be fair with the Showa era, these elements have already been in there. The personal relationship between the villain's faction, and the he final boss being an Kamen Rider are elements present in the Kamen Rider Black manga; the enemy/rival rider changing sides happened with both, Ichimonji and Riderman (who even though is not a secondary Kamen Rider, served as inspiration to those who had that role in Heisei/Reia); and at last, i'm gonna die on the hill that Electronic Human Wave Tackle is a competent action female character and that is a positive point that she doesn't have to be a Kamen Rider.

      I feel the same way about both Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman. The films do not hide from the cheesy or limitations of the original special effects or budgets of the source material. They understand the fans love the series, not in spite of the issues but because of all the scuff and cheesy moments. None of these tokosatsu series would be the same without their flaws. The flaws have become as iconic as the characters themselves. Anno really loves these series, and it shows. Good stories can be told in any genre or medium. Stories become iconic when they manage to overcome their limitations to make their fans feel something. That could be excitement, fear, love, anger, or even hope. In the modern internet connected world, real emotions and expressing them have become something "cringe" or embarrassing. Old school stories about heroes and villains, good guys vs bad guys, brave warriors vs monsters, are all the polar opposite of crimge. They invite the fans to openly and freely live in the moment and cheer when the hero defeats the villains. Yes, it is cheesy, and it looks cheap and outdated, but its honest fun and sometimes the world needs for its heroes to still be the good guys and the villains to truly be monsters in the end. Black and white storytelling may not be realistic, but by god, it is entertaining.

    I personally didn't mind the occasional weird cgi. It may have been copium, but I thought that it enhanced the idea that these are superhumans doing things that are impossible for normal people. The fixed view on the face of Bat and Wasp were especially effective for me, highlighting the creepy factor. The jerky motion during the Wasp fight felt like a live action version of DBZ fights, showing how normal humans wouldn't be able to perceive the full motion of fighters moving at inhuman speed.

    I enjoyed this video. When I first watched Shin Kamen Rider I thought of Ichiro's plan of sending everyone to the habitat was rather childish in the face of the happiness of humanity. I've watched it several times since then but then I learned that there was a Shin Kamen Rider manga which explores Ichiro and his reasons and that did more than open my eyes. In that manga Ichiro starts out so bright and hopeful by the time you see him reach where he was in the movie it is heartbreaking. The associates he had, Spider AUG, Scorpion AUG and K were like the family he never had, that he grew close to. Shared a bond and opened his heart with. But SHOCKER as an organization in the manga hasn't changed much from the show, throughout his climb as an executive he tried to accomplish peace and harmony and things without bloodshed. Even with the realization that Ruriko is his sister from an artificial womb and his father lying to his face he still tried being good, but the other executives as well as the now changed Spider AUG wanted him to stoop as low as they did. But then you understand what the habitat really is, a sort of heaven where the souls of those gone from this world reside in. A dream he cannot attain because of how emotionally crippled he becomes as time passes. He is destined to fail even as he tries to be good. Eventually the bonds he made in SHOCKER break away and he is left alone with Ruriko and even then the connection he had with her is weak than when it began. SHOCKER SIDE more than gives more detail to these villains, it gives such life that it becomes a tragedy. His ideals are misguided in the way he has isolated himself when he should have opened his heart as he did when he was younger.

  • @davez8346
    @davez8346 7 месяцев назад +1

    Great review! You went deep into the layers in this movie. It's a really rewarding one to unpack.
    As a bit of a Showa boomer, I'm really glad for something darker, in contrast to current seasons with their toy props, belts playing dubstep, and particle effects all over the screen. Nothing against those, I enjoy modern KR too, but the original show was what really got me on this toku train. The more restrained feel definitely made the over the top elements, like the fights in the air and the motorcycle chases, really pop. Those felt like images a fan has imagined while watching the show as a kid.
    Anno definitely got carried away as far as stuffing every single thing he's always wanted in a Kamen Rider thing, but I don't see that as a negative necessarily, it felt like a story he's been sitting on for decades. With the Evangelion connections (like blu brought up, the crossover marketing matches up a little too well), it feels like the most Anno thing possible.
    I've definitely struggled with his ideosyncracies in this movie, being a huge fan of Fujioka's depiction of Hongo, but I can forgive Anno for getting personal with it. What he and Ikematsu did with Hongo was very different, but still in the spirit of Kamen Rider. We always hear about how he's the crying hero (hence the helmet teardrops), but now we actually see it.
    There's a lot of back and forth with regards to Anno's auterism, but I think it's fair to say his voice is the strongest here, unlike the previous Shins. That said, Higuchi's input is sorely missed. I think the problems with how the action scenes were filmed could've been mitigated by Higuchi, being the much more experienced of the two when it comes to live action. If the sequel does get made, I hope they share directing duties again (and that Anno is less protective in general).
    I can see the criticism with regards to the number of fight scenes, but some of them I wouldn't want to give up for anything. The Bat-Aug sequence is probably the easiest to cut but that Rider Kick was spectacular. I guess they could've added more downtime scenes in-between; I'm really curious how the bluray edit (coming this November), where they reformat the movie into a 5-episode miniseries with extended scenes will play out.
    I'm glad you mentioned the effect of the pandemic on the film, as far as the empty feel of it. I don't feel it's as pervasive as with other pandemic productions, which will probably help it age better, but it does give the film an interesting melancholy. It reminds me of Dark Souls, where the audience is picking up the pieces of an already broken world.
    Shin KR is probably the most rewarding movie to rewatch lately, for me. I walked away from the theater screening (God, what a cool thing that was) a little letdown by how messy it was, but when you already know how everything plays out, you can just settle in. Every time I've talked about this movie I've ended up rambling at length because it's so heartfelt. It's like seeing a person put on a play about their personal growth, using the toys of their childhood.

    I really like Anno-san's take on "Cutey Honey" and I've been a huge fan of Kamen Rider for a good 22 years now. I really enjoyed "Shin Kamen Rider" because I found it a loving tribute to an iconic series. In fact, in general, I find the Shin movies to be exactly that; loving tributes to iconic characters made by fans who take them very seriously. I liked how Anno-san introduced Takeshi's horror over killing others into the mix along with the kind of trauma from forced cybernetic/genetic augmentation he was doubtless suffering, which even though he was a bit *too* weepy over it for me? It made him more plausible and believable, and likable as well. Really hardcore old school fans probably disagree with me and may have wanted to see a verbatim new take on Ichigo who is a hard charging tough guy without feelings or emotions who just wants to Make The Bastards Pay, but I disagree. Still going to add this Blu ray to my collection when I can get it finally.

    Its funny that no matter how much Anno may hate Evangelion and its fanbase, its success makes him unable to let it go and make different shit. Everything Anno touches has Evangelion in it, Anno liking it or not, Anno intending it or not. lol

    I overall had fun with the film but it didn't quite hit the mark for me. It could be because I'm unfamiliar with Anno's style or maybe it just doesn't suit me personally. However it's clear that there's a lot of passion put into Shin Kamen Rider and I respect that.

    Can't deny its problems, maybe another revision to cut some fat and add more character would have been better. I think the worst offender is probably the scorpion aug sequence. Sure, it was funny, but considering the quite sudden shift of tone in the 2nd half of the movie, mayne that runtime would have been better spent on building the relationship of our main leads

    i understand now. in the very core of every kamen rider series, is depression. XDDD i was wondering why is kamen rider darker than sentai cuz at most aspect theyre the same. now i realized that every kamen rider in any series, experienced depression. tendou is more burdened than depressed although he shoulders that burden very well, hes stil burdened. but every other kamen rider in kabuto are all depressed. XDDD

    You made this film sound better than it is until the end. I found it a bit frustrating. I liked the ideas, performances, and themes, but the script is such an overstuffed mess, it was hard for me to get invested. I was only able to follow it because I’d seen the show and read the manga.

    Moms getting into Kamen Rider is nothing strange at all. Since the Heisei era from Kamen Rider Kyuuga the Kamen Rider series had been springboards for multiple celebrity actors launching them into mainstream fame, in other words, those Kamen Rider actors have both the looks and the acting chops - which they would have to because you can't just pick any guy to play as the lead role - so the guy not only has to look good, but also be able to protray the righousness/upholding justice side of a Kamen Rider. Now picture you are a young mother waking up every Sunday morning to supervise your 5 year old watching Kamen Rider on TV, very soon you'll be attached to the handsome actors and more than meets the eyes stories of the show. And viola, you've tapped into a demographic which you didn't knew existed before.
    It's like the MCU - how many women got enabled and became superhero comic movie watchers in the last decade simply due to all those handsome actors like Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth etc? HUGE amounts. That's basically what happened with Kamen Rider in the Heisei era.
