An incredible man and gift to the world. Ben-Hur is one of the greatest films ever made and its score is a masterpiece. Thank you for this documentary.

Oh wow...this documentary had me in tears. My father introduced me to Ben-Hur, Quo Vadis, El Cid when I was 8 years old. I'm now 46 and I treasure those films in memory of my father and I've been a musician all my life and it has been my life career. Miklós Rózsa's musica has influenced my musical career my entire life.
I loved this interview documentary. I wish it was longer. I enjoyed it!
Thank you Dann for posting this amazing treasure for us to enjoy.

I once performed two pieces of Miklos Rozsa on the piano and uploaded the videos in youtube. Later his daughter Juliet Rozsa contacted me, thanking me for honoring her fathers work. I thought I was losing my mind, it was such an overwhelming honour since I admire her father's music since my early childhood. I'm overjoyed to see her in this documentary!

+John Mauceri Thank you for your comment. I first became aware of Dr. Rozsa's work as a boy of 7 when I went with my cousin to see "Ben Hur" at our theater in St. John's, Newfoundland. I was immediately struck from the very first note and continue to enjoy his music today.

Can you explain why you and this video are referring to him as "Dr" Rozsa? There's no mention of him having a doctorate anywhere I've seen.

I shall always treasure the times I spent with Dr Rozsa, whether it was during a recording session, a visit to his beautiful home, dining in a restaurant in such diverse locations as Seattle, Los Angeles or London. He was a great raconteur, a man with a pithy, dry humour, and someone who never found fault in others.

I became a fan of Rozsa seeing Ivanhoe when I was 13; the music made an impression on me for it's grandeur and impact; I always like Classical/film music. His score for Ben Hur was the most emotion packed score I ever saw in the Movies.

I first learned of Miklós Rózsa through an interview Jerry Goldsmith did. Out of curiosity, since Goldsmith was one of two of my all-time favorite film composers, I began collecting Rózsa scores and I came away very impressed. Hard to find since I collect CDs primarily but I eventually was able to collect seventeen individual scores ranging from The Thief of Bagdad (1940) to Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (early 1980s), including such in-between epics such as Quo Vadis, Ben-Hur, King of Kings, etc. A gorgeous work of musical art. If you are a fan of film music or even just composition style, I highly recommend this

Apart from other soundtracks King of Kings is also magnificent with the mother theme_oboe and Christ_violin and really heartbreaking tunes.

Dr. Rozsa and Maestro Alfred Newman inspired me as a young person to study composition. Truly they were the greats, the giants of film and symphonic composition. My only regret is that I never studied with them. I hope that someday pocket editions of their film score music will be published so that students may profit from heir great example.

Quite interesting the points about parts of Rosza's score being cut out. At the 17:48-18:05 mark it is explained that his score is replaced by a rhythmic drum piece. I heard that drum piece before! It was in the "spaghetti western" film by Italian director Sergio Leone, "The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. Near the very end of the film when Clint Eastwood is leaving a cemetery with bags of gold on horseback riding off into the sunset, and leaving fellow mercenary Tuco in the cemetery (with a rope around his neck) this same drum piece is clearly scoring the scene. I thought everything musical in that film was composed by Italian Ennio Morricone. So, I'm thinking maybe Morricone "sampled" Rosza from "El Cid," BUT if Rosza's music wasn't there in the first place (then they aren't HIS drum beats) then maybe Morricone is indeed using his own stuff. I concluded then that the Italian who was sharing undeserved credit for the score written by Rozsa was Morricone. The simple drum beat "score" anybody could have written, but technically speaking it could be said he (Morricone) made a token contribution to the score to avoid outright fraud. Of course I'm just speculating, but was quite surprised when I heard what I thought was an "original" sound piece from a Clint Eastwood flick. I've never seen the movie "El Cid," I've heard only the main theme.
Then I noticed that a poster to this site, jslasher1 said the Italian composer was Mario Nascinbene.
