IN CASE OF A CREATIVE EMERGENCY: 6. Watch Van Neistat on RUclips.
Inspiration and influence; two indispensable ideas for the artist.
I am so inspired by Van and his films. I wanted to make a video to thank him for his work.
When I'm stuck in a creative rut, Van's videos can be really inspiring to get back on track. I love the practical way he approaches filmmaking - often using little puppets and handcrafted props to tell his stories. His work, and his art, really inspires me to keep going in the arts.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'In case of a creative emergency' is a list that I bashed out on my typewriter in November 2022. I was facing some pretty bad creative block at the time. I hit the wall of creative block often, as do literally all people who do creative things. I wanted to come up with a list of things I can turn to, when facing the wall of resistance, in order to smash it down and keep going. The list was made up of things that I gave a few days to think about. I tried to draw on my own experiences of what has worked for me in the past, but there are also examples here of things that I haven't really tried yet, but things that I think the use of would certainly help me to exercise my creative muscles.
What started as a list for myself to overcome times when work is a struggle has now developed into a weekly video series where I approach each exercise/idea in an attempt to inspire others. In an incredibly strange and meta way, I've actually overcome creative block by making myself incredibly busy making videos about how I overcome creative block, which in turn helps me to overcome said creative block because I have lots of work to focus on. Like I said, it's all very confusing.

Incredible video Andrew. I'm much the same, I love every second of Vans videos. The style that Tom Sachs and the Neistat brothers developed and each honed to their own strength will forever change the way I think about videos and story telling. They're each as much an influence on modern media as Kubrick or Scorsese was to old school film. The shot you took at 2:25 is my favourite in the whole video, incredibly framed! I'm off to binge the rest of your channel, best of luck fellow spirited man.

I too have some real influence from Van. His videos speak to the soul and of course I find parallels to my ways of thinking with his.
And it's not easy producing a short film. I did a short movie called "The Briefcase", and it opened my eyes to the many hours to shoot and edit a video. It gave me a tremendous amount of respect for those who upload, especially those who upload daily like Casey did. I have a 9-5 job, but if I didn't have bills to pay...I would devote all the time and effort to do it.
Seeing Tom Sachs work, I can see how both Van and Casey were so inspired. I love Kubrick films, and I think they inspired Van much the same.
Makes me wonder who influenced Tom Sachs?
Anyway. great post Andrew! Gonna check out your other stuff now.

    • @AndrewLavers

I feel that. Balancing creative work and paid work is a difficult thing. Something I'm really battling with right now. To be completely honest, I've never seen a Kubrick film! I need to address that this week!
Austin Kleon talks about researching the influences for the person who influences you. Then researching the person who influenced them, and so on. That's something I'd love to trace back through the Neistats, Tom Sachs, and so on. Maybe I'll post a video about that one day.
Anyway, thanks for the support and the kind words. It means a lot! Have a great day.

@@AndrewLavers Kubrick movies can be disturbing, and take several watches to "get them". Some are very long too.
If you like Horror movies, I highly recommend The Shining.
Eyes Wide Shut is my favourite but many critics didn't like it.
If you like sci-fi, 2001 A Space Odyssey.
If you like dark comedy, Dr. Strangelove. (I never "got it" personally)
Just don't start with A Clockwork Orange. Brilliant film, but pretty disturbing violent the first go around.

Remember though, to do your thing not for the subscribers or for the recognition, or for praiseful comments like these, but for the utter joy of fixing / making stuff. Do it for you mate. High fives X

Thanks Will! I always create entirely for myself, so it's a real joy when other people seem to like it too! I always use my own personal, internal barometer of "Do I like this?" before I make anything. My theory is that if I like it then I assume there will be other people out there that do too! Anyway, thanks again for the encouragement. Have a great day mate!

Awesome video.. Love the style of these videos. I feel so resonate so deeply with Van that it's given me a part of myself back.
I have sooo much footage and creative ideas, but seem to lack the time to edit all of it. If only I had an editor like Van to put all of my ideas together. How would you even find someone like this?
I cannot fathom all the time it takes to film and edit and put together this style of video.
Thanks to you, for your Thank you video.

This spirited man used to have a rough go of things until The Spirited Man said something to the effect of:
"If you're under 25 and you haven't found your passion, you should be looking for that with all your time. If you're over 25 and you haven't found your passion, you should be making as much money as you can with the skills and tools you have, and be seeking your passion in your free time"
This spirited man disagreed at first, even scorned The Spirited Man. Then he contemplated while he was healing and fixing other parts of his life and his outlook. Then this spirited man got on his feet, grabbed a lawnmower and started working for himself. He still does to this day. Thanks Van. I think we should call this the Van Plan.

That part of that video was like a gut punch to me at first. I’ve thought about that a lot. Personally, I’ve come to realise that I disagree with Van’s opinion on the specific age at which you must find your passion by. But I appreciated the kick up the arse! Thanks for your comment.
