'In Case of a Creative Emergency' is a list that I bashed out on my typewriter in November 2022. I was facing some pretty bad creative block at the time. I hit the wall of creative block often, as do literally all people who do creative things. I wanted to come up with a list of things I can turn to, when facing the wall of resistance, in order to smash it down and keep going. The list was made up of things that I gave a few days to think about. I tried to draw on my own experiences of what has worked for me in the past, but there are also examples here of things that I haven't really tried yet, but things that I think the use of would certainly help me to exercise my creative muscles.
What started as a list for myself to overcome times when work is a struggle has now developed into a weekly video series where I approach each exercise/idea in an attempt to inspire others. In an incredibly strange and meta way, I've actually overcome creative block by making myself incredibly busy making videos about how I overcome creative block, which in turn helps me to overcome said creative block because I have lots of work to focus on. Like I said, it's all very confusing.

DEADLINES!! They are my biggest motivator and pusher of getting things done. I also write things in my notebook and keep lists. As you say baby steps is the best way to break bigger tasks down. Being outside and away from my desk also a massive help- gives space for my brain to process and come up with solutions/ideas. Thanks for the bonus video!

Yes to all of the above.

Thought of another one COLLABORATION! Unexpected ideas come from working with others on a project and you can keep each other accountable and get something finished. Sometimes I resist this but whenever I've worked with others and given them space the fruit is so much sweeter for each of us. 😊

Loved this series. My best way to overcome creative block is to be bored. Shut down Netflix, videogames, social networks, messaging apps, everything. Lay on the floor doing nothing. Speaking of that, laying down on the beach or the grass after a picnic gets my mind racing.

just found you through this vid, so I dont know any of the others,
but after a year of finding my own approach to being creative and get stuff done.
    1. do things that are fun and really double check your aspriations! sometimes the things we "want" to create aren't the things we like to create. If I go with the ones I like to create, things just flow easier anyway.
    2. because my mind is sometimes all over the place I had to create a workspace and surounding that would compliment that! There shouldn't be a spark of an idea where you don't have a workflow for. I have visuals, long form texts, notes, etc but I found a way to link them all together and always, in whatever mood I am, with whatever spark that comes to mind being able to integrate it into my overall project.
Never let expectations of yourself and of how you work get in the way of being creative. (: thats my gist of things

I remember having crazy ideas that I needed to turn into a drawing, picture, Music track, etc. and just thinking about the tremendous result I would get if I did that is just a huge motivator. and watching some photos, videos, drawings, etc from your fav style that you enjoy watching is helpful either, and remember that some people wait to see your art❤❤

I have yet to watch all of the videos on the playlist. Is this one private? The first video I found of this series was the one on Zines. I don’t know if you made a video with this as a subject but cleaning my space especially my creative one helps me get out of creative block. My problem is it really being creatively block is more of completing the things that I start really enjoyed your series. Thanks for making it. I truly think it’s hidden gem.

Ha, you're just early to the party with this one--but it's all good! Thanks for your comment. I didn't actually make a video about tidying! Which is funny, because I do love it also as a method for overcoming creative block.

From your speech and my self reflection it seems that both creative block and creativity in general are going on par with our internal motivation.

When I’m songwriting I often write in other peoples voices in my mind
I would ask myself what would Prince write about? usually kicks me out of any rut I’m in

Limitations help! Nothing as scary as a blank page. My favourite piece of music I've written we were only allowed to use 4 notes, no transpositions, just those 4. Made it way more fun and interesting!

I totally agree! That’s one of my favourite principles-because it means less work with (often) better results! “When it comes to creative work limitations mean freedom” -Austin Kleon
