As he walks into this beautiful place, he says everything is horrible. I think he would be miserable anywhere in the world. It's the kind of mindset that the best place is always the place you are not at.

the state of Santa Catarina is the best state in Latin America without a doubt, it is home to several important companies at an international level such as WEG and BRF (owner of Sadia, Perdigão, etc.), in addition to being the center of tech startups in Brazil surpassing São Paulo. It has very beautiful colonial cities with a high HDI, large theme parks, and well-organized and clean beaches, apart from the lifestyle in contact with nature. I've already researched almost a hundred cities and all the states of Latin American countries, and none of them have this kind of combination between having a great economic potential combined with a healthy lifestyle and in contact with nature.

Floripa is basically a bunch of smaller neighborhoods but that behave a lot of times like different small towns, given their distance and sometimes difficult access to. Each neighborhood has its own characteristics, there are fishing, surfing, partying, relaxing neighborhoods, some of which are expensive, and others are more affordable, so you shouldn't have expectations of daily parties in a local fishing neighborhood for example.
I see a ton of people coming to Floripa looking for something specific to do (partying, nature seeking or surfing for example), but end up not doing their research and staying somewhere that doesn't correspond to what they're looking for. You wouldn't want to go partying and rent an apartment in Armação, or want to go surfing and rent a place in Jurerê, or nature seeking and rent an apartment in downtown.
However, each of these places have amazing things to do in their specific characteristics. The southern portion of the island has TONS of trails with different traits and options within them. The northern part has literally some of the best parties and nightclubs in the world, while the eastern side has beautiful and great surfing spots year round.
I'm sorry to hear your experience wasn't positive, but I'd recommend coming back after doing some research so you can enjoy those things you're looking for.
About the weather, yeah, it's unstable certain parts of the year as in you can be under amazing sunshine and 20 minutes later under torrential rain, just as pretty much any island like it. I'm writing this right now in Floripa, outside, with no clouds in sight and 29°C temperature.
Hope you come back and have a wonderful time, as this is a special place. Cheers!

    • @rockintheattic

@@szymonlebek9040 Campeche is already a more populated neighborhood that you'll find busier streets than some other neighborhoods around, but it is definitely chiller than downtown or the north side of the island. Good thing about Campeche is that you'll have a variety of options of places to stay, you'll find almost everything you need, and it's closer to some of the best hiking, surfing, windsurfing and sandboarding spots on the island, compared to more well-known neighborhoods. Joaquina and Lagoa just to the north and the best hiking spots on the island just a few minutes driving south.

Dude sorry about your bad experience. But let's see a couple of things. I'm originally from Florianopolis, but I left a couple of years ago to the US. About your rent, you were robed ;( my last apartment I used to pay around 700 dollars for 3 bedrooms in one of the nicest neighborhoods of the city, near the beach and downtown area. The people, most of the people from the state of Santa Catarina have origin in Italy, Germany, and Portugal (myself) so we are not that open like the north of Brazil where people would hug you and call you my brother in the first 5 minutes of conversation lol. But my tip, I would do Tinder or Bumble, even if you not looking for hookups, you can meet people from your couch and break the ice and start making friends. The people not parting over the week, that is totally true, I went yesterday to Vegas for a little work trip and the bars, clubs and Casinos were popping in a Tuesday, for me, that looks crazy, in Floripa people intend to focus on the work, family, studying over the week days. The wind is relative, Florianopolis has 27 beaches and the wind comes from the north or south, so if the wind comes from the south you go to a beach up north of the island and you are good, no wind. The weather usually is great, but like Bali, we have our rainy seasons, especially in years that we have El Nino. Your Coconut example is kind of tricky because in the South coconut trees are not native, it is not hot enough all year round. About the traffic that is totally true too, it is an Island like Hawaii there is no place to go, it is one way up one way down, and that is it. The tip is to organize your time to go before the rush hour or after. Another topic was not a lot to do, that is true, you can only do beaches, trails, the party (over the weekend ;) ) and that are all, I'm a surfer so surfing borning in over there gave me all the playground needed. The food humm I would look a little bit better, they're a lot of great local food. But that is all I appreciate your point of view and am sorry about the rent situation. Cheers!!

Thanks for commenting and clarifying a few things from a local point of view. For the apartment you're probably referring to prices on a long term rent. That was my problem, on short term rents they will rip you off. Again, I appreciate your clarification on some aspects :)

Nice comment Altino. I’m also from Floripa and now live in the US. Floripa is a beautiful place, but it has its issues. It’s expensive, traffic is insane during the summer and the winds can be a pain in the butt. Although, it’s an amazing city. It’s all about the beaches and the natural beauty of the island. If it was perfect I guess I’d never had left, right? Haha. Very interesting to see the point of view from international tourists too. Peace!

Although I'm surprised parties made it to your list of negatives, as to me there is literally no place on Earth that even comes close to having parties as good as Floripa, and I've traveled A LOT. I'm currently in Rio and to me it's far worse: people are not as fun at parties, weather is too humid, and the food is awful.

As a person who’s visited 10 cities in Brazil I would say that Florianopolis is one of the few that I would never return to. Floripa is relatively safe and clean and would be a good place to raise a family, however if you’re a single man, skip it. Like the creator said, the people are a little aloof and standoffish (and other BRAZILIANS from other regions have said this, so it’s not just me) and there’s not a lot of entertainment options. If you’re a single Black man, there are much better options in Brazil than Floripa, because after 2 visits I got the distinct impression that women in Floripa are not interested in Black men, which is fine, but as a single man who likes women, this is not an optimal place. Florianopolis is not a bad place by any means, just not for me.

    1. He was ripped off on Rent. Locals are ripped off too during high season. I only move during winter and I need to do a lot of research
    2. Restaurants - its true that if you want to eat in a local restaurant at some touristy area you'll end up eating the same thing. Fish, oysters and shrimps. But the city itself has a plethora of restaurants for a 500k town.
    3. Expansive: I agree, it is expansive as Portugal
    4. Social life: it's an island, people are naturally closed. It doesn't mean we are cold. But as a local I've heard from many friends from other parts of Brazil that we are perceived as being cold and that we like to keep to our inner circles. Everywhere will have problems you will never find a place that is perfect, some stuff has to come from inside of yourself to allow yourself to feel good.
As a side comment back in 2019 when I was in Rio 950 USD could only get you a room in a shared appartment in the good parts of the city, rent for a full apt starts at around 1200 USD easily (but now exchange rates are different so idk).

@Patti Films: I'm not sure where you're from but 1k USD for an apartment in Switzerland? If you take the most expensive place in Brazil and compare it with the cheapest place in a forgotten village in Switzerland then it would still be hard. But try to find an apartment in canton of Zurich, Zug or Schwyz for 1k USD.. it's impossible. Maybe a room in a shared apartment. So don't spread false stories about Florianopolis being as expensive as Switzerland. In your other video from Zurich you describe how much you spend in restaurants or bars. $35 for a pizza and $7 for beer. Then you complain coconut in Florianopolis is a few bucks or coffee is $1.20 instead of $1 in Rio. How much is it in Zurich? I think last I checked it was $10-15. As a matter of fact you don't compare apples to apples. You compare the cost of bread and 2 eggs in Zurich from supermarket to a meal in restaurant in Florianopolis. How's the weather in ZRH? 3 months of summer and the rest of the year it's rainy, windy and cold, days are short. At least it's +20C every day of the year (during daytime). Can't say the same of ZRH. Then you compare the cost of the apartment in Florianopolis for which you clearly overpaid and it's $950 vs $700 you pay for.. a room in shared apartment. Why don't you compare the price of a room in a shared apartment in Florianopolis to a room in ZRH?

Totally agree! any well travelled person will know that his vid is full of incongruences. It seems he had an unlucky experience with people and weather
when he said he can gets an apartment almost in Switzerland i was like what!!!? Switzerland to get that space for a whole month for 950usd I was like no! Absolutely not. Just a long neck beer i paid 19 Swiss Francs back in 2012, the most expensive beer I ever paid and he is complaining of a coffee 1.2usd and a coconut water 2usd and a meal 5-6 usd. Seriously his video is just a lot of crying.
I met a German girl in Barcelona 25y now March 2024 and she spent 9months in Florianopolis and said she had the best 9months of her life and she even convinced her parents to visit her there and they loved the city. Looks like a pretty place, eye candy, but there's not much to do there except take in the scenery. Would probably be a good idea not to go there alone. Solo travelers do tend to have a more difficult time fitting in wherever they go in the world it seems compared to going with a group of people. Thanks for sharing your fair and balanced opinions about Florianopolis. Oh yes, being safe is important. Boring places tend to be pretty safe; exciting places tend to be pretty dicey.

In high season there is no big events, just local parties focused in tourists, January is the worst month here. Along 54km inside island there are great variety of restaurants, but if you live in the budget, some regions is high price, especially in high season. Some brazilians are corrupt, even not knowing what it means. Along the year you find every level of price, it depends on neighborhood where you're at. But if you're into sports, MMA, surfing, skydiving, hiking and spending time in nature, thats where you'll find Floripa's real magic.
Rio and Floripa are both beach towns, period. Floripa is an island and it does not have the same infra structure as heavily tourist driven Rio. A reason that locals tend to get a little annoyed during the busy season.
The weather is what it is. Thats The southern coast. The farther down you go, the windier and colder it gets.
I hope more people watch your video because the island is already too crowded.

I understand where he's coming from, but I believe this guy just had the worst luck and attitude toward Florianópolis.
I've been here for a year and my experience has been completely different, here's a few things to know before coming/living here.
You will need a car. Florianópolis is a big Island, and you'll need to do a lot of exploring before coming here. Traffic can be bad but hardly unbearable, avoid rush hours next to the center if possible. A motorcycle is also good, but it rains a lot.
There are good people here, and you can make friends. For the first two months, I barely met anyone because I was constantly busy with work until I decided to take boxing lessons and made some great friends, we train, hang out and even work together. Yes, people here are more reserved but I see that as a good thing, you just need to balance your expectations and join a group of like-minded people, don't go
alone to a party expecting to meet the best people in the world. Be natural and don't try to force relationships, no one likes that.
Parties. I'm not much of a party guy, but there's always something going on in Floripa, and the parties can be very wild, especially during the summer. You can still have fun during the winter, but summer is the best time for it. Besides that there's always a cultural event of similar going on, you just need to know the right places.
Prices. He got the gringo treatment, almost $1000 for rent is wild! If you do your research and come here during the start of the low season you can rent furnished apartments near the beach for about $300. You can stay for 8 months and save up for an annual rent close to high season, you can find great places with a pool, gym, and more for $500. All that close to the beach, hard to find that much value in other capitals in Brazil.
Wind. That's true for the east part of the island, which is better for sports. If you just want to enjoy the beach in a chair or swimming then you're better off in the north part of the Island, much less windy and pleasantly breezy during the summer.
Overall I'm having a terrific time in Floripa, almost totally different from what is described in the video.

So you come to Brazil in one of the most popular regions of the country, you are literally in a paradise and just see the bad side of things? In Brazil nobody is obliged to speak English and so little Spanish. How do you want or expect people to talk to you? Regarding prices, yes, things are expensive, everything on the coast is usually more expensive and a native knows that! The only thing you did in this video instead of enjoying your trip was complaining. He paid cheaply for his meals and drinks and housing and got what he deserved in cheap service! There are places that you didn't show and that are sure to be the opposite of everything you said. Perhaps he should have prepared himself better financially to go to Florianopolis-Brazil and would have had a completely opposite view and an incredible experience! Dollar at 1 to 5 in exchange and you complaining about coffee for 1 dollar? When he goes to his country, he pays $5 at Starbucks and he even gives thanks and tips. Congratulations to the kind of person that no Brazilian really wants to see there!

As a Brazilian from the Caipira culture of southern Minas Gerais, I can attest most Brazilians dislike Rio and its people as weird, immature, unreliable and untrustworthy; I'm not saying that's what they actually are, but that's the stereotype and opinion on Cariocas by the rest of Brazil. I'd say Florianópolis and São Paulo are better representatives of Brazilian culture: work insanely hard for the whole week, than chill and party with your friends and family (most Brazilians avoid street raves, unlike what being in Rio would make you think) and laugh and have a good time; the idea of crazy irresponsible partying foreigners often having of Brazil is insulting to most of us; in fact at least half of all Brazilians hate Carnival as currently celebrated in this country.
In any Brazilian city with a properly flat terrain, I recommend cycling around or using mass transit (when it exists) rather than driving. It's healthy and actually saves you time; unless you're in proper clothes, of course, in which case it's best to get an Uber.

Are 98% of Brazilian cities dangerous? The country is bigger than the contiguous USA, do you know the other 5 thousand cities to talk nonsense like that? just having psychological problems to not like Florianópolis.

This guy is depressed and he complains about everything. Floripa is an amazing place. Don't listen to him about the city.
