The world would be a lot better now, if my generation actually listen to the lyrics at a rage concert, instead of being drawn to the mosh pit
The generation before us knew where they were when JFK was shot... I literally remember the day I bought this album took it home and heard this guy say: "a yellow ribbon instead of a swastika; I warm my hands up on the flames of the flag; What? The "land of the free"? Whoever told you that is your enemy; some of those that work forces are the same that burn crosses; you know they went after king when he spoke out on vietnam... he turn the power to the have nots and then came the shot." I was like what in the hell are these guys reading which led to a whole new enlightening Chomsky Zinn Parenti Kinzer and so much more.
This album was transformative In my early college days, And unfortunately the sound was copied, and Nu metal was born and focused all of gen x's testoterone on limp biscuit mosh pits
I disagree I grew up on rage and lyrics are way more important to me than sound.
I read through EVERY word on the albums booklets.. I mostly have them memorized still.
Yes you are 100% right!
I listened but I was from Europe so it didn't really concern me.
A quick search for the meaning of yellow ribbon brings this up:
"The yellow ribbon saw renewed popularity in the United States during the Gulf War in the early 1990s."
Given this album came out in 1992, the meaning of "yellow ribbon" in the song is likely to mean that support for the Gulf War and by association support to the US invading foreign countries
is comparable to what the Nazis did.
The clip in Primetime - all the networks aired Operation Desert Shield on tv in Primetime, so we could see the bombs/rockets. Made my dad support the war 100%. The propaganda worked.
Yes, people were wearing and displaying the yellow ribbons en masse during the first Gulf War. This is definitely what de La Rocha meant.
Exactly this. I would also like to add that the first Gulf War was the first war to be live broadcast and televised globally as it happened, which is the connection between it and the media critique in the lyrics.
Man...I've listened to RATM since '92, bought every CD, saw them live half dozen times, and heard this track I don't know how many times... and you sir, you ABSOLUTELY NAILED IT. I wasn't sure when you got stuck briefly on the, "load the clip, fire it into primetime," but then you freakin 100% nailed this song's message. You are really good at picking up on the lyrics as they happen. It's impressive. Much love MrLBoyd
I think you might have overshot the yellow ribbon analysis... I think in the context of the song its more of a shock analogy aligned with supporting war. the reason I say this is that zak is smart enough to understand the wheels of the war machine have nothing to do with the troops... they are simply pawns in the game and I cant see someone like zak pointing the finger at pawns when you can take aim at the royals.
He’s talking about the general public who display yellow ribbons to show their support for the troops, just like a “Good” German citizen would have displayed the swastika out of a sense of patriotism to “support their troops” mindlessly, like they have a bullet in their head.
I get that, but it would be dumb to blindly trust in the actions of "pawns", specially when those pawns would murder you just with an order like they do in foreign countries. Here in Colombia, US military only means girls being r4ped, filmed and killed to then sell the videos as ch1ld pornogr4phy. The "pawns" are not much more trustworthy than the police, and the war crimes don't exist only because of the high ranking officers. The US soldiers who gladly took selfies next to the bodies of the tortured people from Iraq back in the 2000's were not high ranking officers who just give orders. People in USA just have this indoctrinated idea that the military is a sacred, all-good entity as if a lot of them wouldn't enjoy the killing they were ordered to do.
He’s talking about propaganda and knee jerk patriotism in the first bit. Not the troops, but how people are willing to follow what your government tells you to follows. Very much a jab at government controlled media. They also talked about all the propaganda in movies as well, in other songs. I’d recommend “The Ghost of Tom Joad” if you haven’t done it yet.
Yep, and here the "set" meant the TV set, not your gang of peers like seemed to be the interpretation in the video.
9mn is the film type and the bullet... clip.. .video clip... gun clip... these dudes are rappers.. not rockers... thats why they toured with Wu-Tang..
Thanks, that was both fun and really impressive that you figured the meaning out that quickly. This was during the first gulf war, hence the haated for the yellow ribbons.
Not sure what all rage you've heard, but i highly recommend GORILLA RADIO, DOWN RODEO and TESTIFY, along with every orher rage song orher people suggest. Trust me, you'll never be disappointed by a rage song.
This song reminds me of Tool's "Vicarious". It's about vicariously living through the tragedies on the news and TV but keeping our distance in our safe space yet drawn to the "bleeds it leads" agenda of the news. Give it a listen!
if you really think about it every thing he said in this song kinda hold true today .
That news segment made me think of Norm MacDonald's 12 minute joke.. it's all about how the news used to be "half a hour" (as he says), but is now 24 hours long. And it takes off from there. I'm stunned you haven't reacted to any Norm! :D
Thanks for a great reaction!
It's not that he doesn't support the troops. He just doesn't support their orders or the people giving those orders .
Give them bread and circuses and they will never revolt
Juvenal
Probably the most honest and interesting reaction to a Rage song I've ever seen. I hadn't thought of it in exactly that way, but cool.
"They load the clip in omnicolour" they're talking about TV and how's utilized to blast messages to the public as bullets to the head of the people.
Wow! Your patron is on point!
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
PREACH ON ZACK!
"Tie a yellow ribbon around the tree to say you will wait for me" was a song about a man going to war 😔
Thank you so much for your perspective. This was awesome!
It's a masterpiece of poetry and performance
yellow ribbon also refers to yellow journalism
These guys lyrics are so dead on even to this day it’s crazy.
Saw this album live at Horden Pavilion Sydney Australia. Small venue. Absolutely amazing.
I have a request, Rage Against the Machine: The Ghost of Tom Joad. Buckle up
Love you Rage lyric breakdowns. You always seem to nail their messaging. You should do Vietnow, one of their more creative lyrical songs imo, and it’s not covered too much
there's no other band with as much conviction as rage
Always loved this song. Great analysis on your part...good job, bro.
RATM was raging against propaganda and echo chambers 30 years before the current era. I have to echo Kory Beavers below. If only more of my generation (22 when this was recorded) took Rage's lyrics to heart instead of just losing it in the mosh pit.
A lot of them did, shame the US isn’t a democracy
2000 Democratic Convention
Rage against the machine
Watch.
I was there at Pinkpop....What an energy!
He was referring to the news, I believe.
To cite another poet: "We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms"...
“When the set commands ya,” set=tv set
Man i probably shoulda gone to college. I grew up on this stuff but i have zero media literacy, lol. I just thought their stuff bopped. Definitely got a bullet in my head
Future reactions, "The Ghost of Tom Joad, Vietnow, and Born of a Broken Man.
Historians are my favorite bc at first they seem almost cocky, but then you discover they are just extremely well researched
I recommend "39 Thieves" by Aesop Rock.
Every night, CNN would cover the first Gulf War (1990-1991). This song perfectly describes what that was like and how people would wear and display yellow ribbons to show their support. Yet the news never mentioned the killings of Iraqi civilians.
@@dejuren1367 no it doesn’t because the US did not invade Ukraine and kill Ukrainian civilians
Check out rage township rebellion from same album most unratted but banger
Love this song. Still relevant, unfortunately ❤
If it bleeds it leads....
Calm like a bomb... idk if u did it but it is yet another ratm banger, best reactions
Yellow ribbon is for dead soldiers
The news
Apparently the meaning wasn't lost on me....
But now with internet we get to decide what propaganda we want to be victims of and they don't like it. Hence mis and dis information 😂 times they are a change'n.
Boyd is an odd reactor, because he doesn't so much reacts as much as he breaks it down and analyzes it live :D
edit: BTW the song is of course about 'manufacturing consent' and Zack even had an interview with Noam Chomsky, the author of the idea.
bullet in the head = gaslighting (via broadcast propaganda in this case)
The amerixan army is the same as the ss is what he he is saying, and he is right
