Who's still shocked about how smooth catalyst browse is? not to mention, I also wish Final Cut Pro had color grading control like Catalyst Browse, anyone else agree?
This is the most useful Catalyst Browse stabilization video that I've seen. Really appreciate the detailed information and it's obvious to me that the others just have not done enough work to match the top quality of your information that you were able to summarise from experimentation. REALLY appreciate your help. Thank you, Tymek!
Your channel is severely underrated considering the quality info you provide and the manner in which you present it - kudos and props to you! You've got a new sub from me :)
Thank you very much for the kind comment, i really do appreciate it :D i have taken a little break in the last few months but i will be coming back with more videos soon :)
Thank you for your feedback on the fact that 24fps requires 1/200 shutter speed, and 60fps requires 1/500 shutter speed. I could not understand why there was a slight tremor in the video while I was moving to track the subject. Thanks. You have been liked and subscribed.
Glad I could help :) there is a chance you can go slightly slower, but I just found this to work the best. As long as you can reduce motion blur a lot the software will work properly. Good luck in your creative endeavours! :)
This kinda Shutter speeds is required if you are planning to stabilize the footage in Catalyst browser right? If I shoot in tripod we can shoot low shutters right ?
@@850Tech I'm not sure which one of us you are asking, but I would say yes, as long as your shutter speed is 2x what your frame rate is. You always want your footage to have a natural blur of motion. The use of a tripod eliminates unnecessary movement of the camera, which eliminates the need for the image stabilization available in catalyst browse. I have noticed, however, that the stabilization function does not work on footage where I have bumped the tripod during a shoot. There will still be a slight wiggle of the footage at the moment of contact.
Hi, I would like to ask you a question because I have just purchased a Sony ZV-E10 camera and I use "Catalyst Browse" to do my color correction. I downloaded my video files directly to my iMac's hard drive and did the color processing without difficulty. The problem is that when I do "EXPORT", my new video file created does not take into account the added effects? Does the camera have to be connected to the computer for this to work? I even clicked on "TRANSCODE SETTINGS", and it doesn't take anything into account in the export... do you have any idea? Thank you for your help. DRJ
Awesome video. I am shooting in slog3…. No matter what I try to change in settings…when I open files in premiere the already have the Sony rec709 lut applied which I don’t want. Even the preview in the software is flat log….But in premiere it’s pre graded
hi, sorry about the extremely late reply - you probably already dealt with this issue but i recall something similar was occurring in final cut pro and there was a setting you had to turn off. unfortunately i dont use premier so im not sure where you could find it.
Tymek, I wanted to thank you for the info about using intra to maintain 10bit. I even bought catalyst production suite to get 10bit, as I was getting banding in sky in a video I took and getting frustrated. I tried using intra 480 and then I used compressor to change .MXF file to prores. It shows no banding and seems to maintain the 10bit info. Appreciate your work.
Nice video! I shot an important project at 24f 1/50 with the intention of using catalyst browse and didn’t know the 1/200 rule. A lot of shots don’t have a lot of movement. Would I be able to process some of them just fine?
You can definitely give it a shot. it might work but you may get some weird results. you'll have to test it out. if the movement isnt to extreme I think you have a better chance of it working out though.
Like he said in the video - it's one or the other or gt canceled out. Use in-camera stabilization of change your shutter to 1/200. Gonna have to try this shutter style and figure out Slog3 correct MM.
Thank you! :) unfortunately not. I think having reduced motion blur is just a permanent limitation of using the software. As you saw adding it in post isn’t the best but depending on how you want something to look you might think it looks better then nothing at all.
Thank you :) I think I was around 1/ 200 or 250 for 24p so I think around there should be fine enough for 30fps I would maybe do a test shot or two, and if it’s still too shaky just crank up the shutter speed a third of a stop
This video was extremely helpful! I've been testing it out and the footage looks amazing at 25fps (in Europe) with a shutter speed of 1/250. However I do experience some issues when testing it with 50fps at 1/500. The software doesn't seem to apply the stabilisation until I've exported the footage. Is this a bug in the software or do I need to adjust a setting?
You Sir! and Your comment just solved MORE THAN A YEAR'S WORTH OF SERIOUS HEADACHE FOR ME!! I was running into the same issue when checking 60FPS footage in Catalyst Browse and thought it was ruined because the 24 FPS worked so well in the stabilizing window' before and after! I've tried all sorts of shutter speeds and settings and would still get that jittery, jarring footage while running it through Catalyst. I tried actually exporting it and BANG!! Beautiful ass stabilized gimbal like footage. It's a shame Sony hasn't addressed this or has made any notification warning about this... Thank you again for sharing your feedback, never know which poor soul it is going to help! Cheers!! 🍻
Hey thanks this amazing tutorial. You recommend that 1/200 shutter speed for 24 fps because that vibration gone. But the blur motion looks better in 1/50 shutter speed. So which shutter speed should we go with? If I choose 1/50 shutter speed, am I gonna have vibration or not in my footages? You recommended 1/200 because of the main reason is to prevent shaking? Thanks in advance.
Hey there :) yes that is that problem with catalyst browse. Having proper motion blur with the 180 degree rule confuses the software and it makes the footage look worse than it did without stabilization. You have to have a high enough shutter to get rid of the motion blur for the software to stabilize properly unfortunately which is its biggest drawback.
for catalyst browse specifically? I would shoot the same settings for any of the picture profiles. the shutter speed always needs to be higher and i would just change the exposure with aperture and ISO
Hey there :) I’ve never done it myself but some other commenter said that if you get catalyst Prepare, it allows you to batch stabilize clips. However it isn’t free. There may be a free trial available though to test out the software
Hi!!! Fantastic video, one question: when I tried to import xmf files to FCPX, the footage appears with color correction, not slog 3…..you know what could be the issue?
Yes i believe i had that issue. its been a while but i think you have to change the "output color space" option at the top of the export settings. one of those options should retain sLog.
For some reason, the FX6 did not record the gyroscope metadata. and only 1 of the FX3 shots did... hmmm I was not shooting slow motion... the extra metadata sounds like a great idea if only it was compatible with Davinci .... the extra step workflow is not very attractive in most cases. Thanks for the video
thats strange. the ONLY setting that didnt work on my A7S III is 120fps. everything else (24 fps, 60 fps, as well as all three codecs) should record gyro data and be able to stabilize in catalyst. I know its a terrible work flow. it would be great if they developed a plug-in for davinci, FCP, adobe etc. so that you could stabilize right in the editor. i doubt that will ever happen though as it seems Sony puts barely any time into Catalyst Browse. it still doesnt support M1 macs like 1.5 years after they came out.
Czesc Tymek, I have a problem because it does not stabilize at 50fps, but at 25fps there is no such problem (it stabilizes both with body stabilization turned off and with standard and active stabilization). My body a7SIII.
Personally i am a Final Cut Pro editor but i've heard that the stock colour grading options available in FCP and PP aren't nearly as good as some specific colour grading plug-ins. However, colour grading is by far my weakest creative skill so i personally dont do a lot of it. Because you would have to colour grade each individual clip and export separately id image unless you are only posting or delivering one clip, it will be significantly more work then just colour grading in the editor directly where you can apply it to all the clips in your timeline.
wow I had no idea i will have to keep so many things in mind like shutter speed and bitrate etc... And you are right it tskea extra time... this makes me just want to get a gimbal and don't bother with catalyst browse! Thank you for the info, this was my fist time using the program and i was trying to stabilize a 24fps clip, so of course it turned out giddier! Probably my last time trying to stabilize in post! 😅
Yea I think this software is more so for just on the go, non professional shooting where you want your video to look a little less shaky and you aren’t too worried about some of the other draw backs. Gimble will always be the way to go most of the time for the best looking footage
from what I've seen warp stabilization has some serious wobble as well. I think the technology is quite similar to the final cut pro stabilization. So Catalyst browse is probably the best you can get but the high shutter rate is a serious drawback.
Good morning :) So Sony provided me with this webpage: (support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/disoft/en/#catalyst) If you scroll down to the Catalyst Browse section, and click "* The SteadyShot function is supported on the these models." it shows which Sony models are currently able to use the metadata stabilization. Unfortunately it looks like at this moment the a6300 is not included in that list. however if you have the camera it might be worth seeing if the stabilization icon comes up for your clips. or even reach out to Sony and ask if they may be introducing a6300 compatibility in the future.
Thank you very much :) I appreciate you commenting and increasing that engagement haha. i respond to every comment so if you ever have any questions im always happy to try and help!
I think in 2023, it's actualy fine to keep the incamera stabilization and use catalyst browse? But this output limit is really crazy. Why sony does not put XAVC S 10 bit in the free catalyst browse?
Can you explain by using Sony Catylist Browser how I can, 'Batch Capture' all of my clips using a SXS Card Reader directly into my PC to next import into Adobe Premiere? Or an I use the Adobe Capture Utility to get only one large File?
Thanks for the great video! I'm having issues stabilizing clips on Catalyst Browse that are 30 mins long, keeps saying error file. I'm shooting with a Sony FX3 30fps 4k 10bit XAVC-S stabilize off. Using a MacBook Air M1 chip 16gb. Do you know why its giving me errors? Is 30 mins too long to stabilize? Any settings you could prefer would be great. Thank you
It’s a tough one to pin point. 30 min does sound like quite a long clip, but I’ve also been told that m1 still isn’t fully supported by catalyst browse. I’d recommend trying to record a few different clips, for different lengths and codecs and see if it works then. Otherwise contacting sony creative software is your best bet.
What settings do we need to turn off, on the sony a7siii before we stabilise using catalyst browse. I know you mentioned them in the video but I couldn’t get it clearly even after watching twice. It would be much helpful if you can please reply :)
You just need a higher shutter speed over the 180 degree rule, ( I think I need 1/200 or 250 for 24p, and 1/500 for 60p) and then you just need all in body image stabilization off. No IBIS and no active stabilization for best results

Dear Tymek. I keep getting “invalid license error” on Catalyst Browse. It works on my MacBook Pro. Doesn’t work anymore with my iMac. Can you help me out?
Good morning :) i've seen some people have some problems with M1 in the past. i dont have access to one at the moment so i cant test it out unfortunately. last time i talked to Sony Support, which was months ago, they said they didnt have official support for it yet, but i think it was working for some people, albeit with a few glitches here and there.
I think it would be great if you had more control options when stabilizing. For example, I would love to just be able to level the horizon. I still use a glidecam quite a bit but the hardest thing about it is keeping the horizon straight all the time. This would be such a nice fix if that option were available.
Yea that would be super useful. Sony really lags behind with this software though. They don’t even have m1 compatibility yet after over a year, and that’s something a lot of people need.
What would be your workflow to stabilize using catalyst. When importing in fcpx using the own import feature it removes gyro data so there is a need to copy using finder or import from the sd card,
Is it possible to stabiliaze all files in folder? If I have 50 mp4 files in folder I should stabilaze every file 50 times? :-| I can't stabilaze all files in folder for one click?
No unfortunately not , or at least not that I am aware of. It’s because for each clip you need to pick the crop factor. Some will need more crop to stabilize and others less so each one needs to be processed separately by the user.
Is there any method for Catalyst Browse/Prepare to process stabilization in a batch? Clicking clips one by one to stabilize is a disastor when handling a big project with thousand clips.
haha yes it can be. I havent done it myself, but another person who commented on this video indicated that they tried catalyst prepare and through that they were able to batch process. however it is a paid program - but there might be a free trial you are able to download.
Behold! The most relevant video related to Catalyst Browse and Prepare. I'm having an issue that hopefully I can pick your brain about. When I try to stabilize an individual clip, Browse offers up the ability to apply the stabilization settings to all my clips in the folder...but says I'll need to have Prepare to do that. No big deal! I downloaded the trial to do a batch export/stabilization...and it doesn't allow it. What gives? Running on an M1 2020 MacBook Pro.
Hey there :) thank you for the kind comment, much appreciated. Unfortunately it’s not something I know much about, I’ve never tested out prepare before but I know what you mean about getting that page that shows which videos you want to apply the settings to. That window never used to be there but before it was, officially there was no way to batch process stabilization. I think potentially there still isn’t, and that batch setting apply may just be for color correction or something. The only thing I can thing of is that it can’t batch process because each clip is different and the default stabilization amount is unique to each clip, I’ve also noticed you can usually retain a solid 10 % more of the frame by cropping manually. Sony creative software or what ever the group is called doesn’t seem to have there shit very together lol. The m1 has been out for over a year and it’s still not officially supported even though there are a lot of people now using them. Sorry this isn’t much help but my guess is that it’s simply not possible to batch export quite yet. If you go to the webtsite you can reach out to support directly, they at least do reply quite quickly
@@TymekStolarz thank you for the thorough response! it seems like it was corrected in a very recent update on Prepare and was able to do it with very little problem. I'd love some M1 optimization soon though
oh interesting. so just to confirm, you were able to batch process stabilization through Prepare? if so thats great to hear. a lot of questions i get on this video is if its possible to batch process. yes they are really dragging their heels on m1 support, its been over a year, its crazy.
Wow, great workflow step for previewing clips prior to bringing them into a video editor like FCP or Adobe Prem. But, why doesn't make it easy to 1 to 5 start clips to organize or anything.? Gues that's why it's named: Browse and not Organize. lol
If it isnt available now, i doubt they will add it. if it doesnt work it may be because the camera doesnt record Gyro data - so there is no update that would make catalyst browse work.
I've heard that on certain lenses, particularly off brand ones, the camera won't save gyroscope data and therefore no stabilization can be applied. Is there a link to a place that shows which lenses are compatible?
i actually hadnt heard about this until recently when someone commented on this, or another one of my videos about how an off-brand lens didnt work, but a sony one did (i cant seem to find the comment right now). truthfully i am not too sure if there is a resource showing which lenses work and which ones dont. i bet some lenses in an offbrand will work, while some of their lenses will. Sony obviously wouldn't be testing this so it would need to be just a consumer that puts the data together, and i cant seem to find any information on it. i did just read that a user was able to stabilize their tamron 28-75, another one said that it seems to work with "smart" lenses that communicates the focal length. so i would bet that most newer lenses will likely work, but older manual lenses probably will not.
hi there, sorry about the late reply, i was waiting for a reply from sony. i was about to download it on my m1 macbook pro 13'' and am able to stabilize it seems, but it is very slow and glitchy. the image screen tears, it cant hold any type of decent frame rate, and exporting a 1.5 minute video took probably 10-20 times longer than on my intel imac. now the imac is a lot more powerful then this m1 but sony did say they dont officially support m1 yet. this is the same answer they gave me at the beginning of 2021. i think potentially the newer m1 pro and max might do better but i think its simply not optimized, so although its possible to use it, its not very fun. but the exported clip i tested seemes to have worked and is glitch free so thats good.
@@TymekStolarz I appreciate all the effort you went through. Definitely very helpful. I did end up pulling the trigger on an m1 MacBook Pro. Haven’t received it yet, but I guess I’ll see. Thank you again for such a great response. Happy thanksgiving to you and your family.
@@TymekStolarz it’s a 14 “ MacBook Pro m1, ordered it from the Apple website for $1999 (didn’t read all the specs) I figured it’s gonna be a lot faster then my 2016 MacBook Pro. Although now I’m not sure when it comes to catalyst browse. I also use Adobe premiere, hopefully that runs smoothly.
From what i saw, it didnt exactly matter which codec you used. Personally i mostly use HS. yes IBIS and active need to be turned off for stabilize in catalyst browse to work properly.
Hi there, are you still having this issue? Ive never had this issue come up so i have no idea how i would fix it. you might have to reach out to Sony Creative Software to help you with that problem.
I thought that I could use this new gyro stabilization for 8k footage on the Sony A1 since this mode does not offer active stabilization but it seems like Catalyst Browse can not go higher than 4k DCI output. It's unfortunate that there are so many issues with this type of stabilization.
Darn, and using 8k would really preserve that resolution when needing to crop in, even if you had to crop in by a lot. You could basically just stand way back and just crop into where you need to stabilize in post and still basically get a 4k image lol. Hopefully as time goes on, working with 8k will be added to CB.
Its definitely not great. I think it has its applications, but probably not an option in professional settings. I wonder if its possible for the software to be updated to get you similar results with a proper shutter angle.
There is surprisingly very little info online on which sony cameras work with the stabilization or not. i've gotten this question a lot so i just submitted a ticket with Sony to ask for them to forward me a link to where the compatible cameras are listed. I probably wont hear back for a day or two though. from what i've seen from other people posting about the program, i have not seen the a6400 mentioned as a compatible camera. if you try it yourself you will know pretty quick by seeing if the stabilization icon pops up or not.
I tried to look up the camera and If it’s the one I think I found release in 2017, I would say unlikely. It seems like only newer cameras released after 2020 or 2021 are able to stabilize in catalyst browse
unfortunately at the moment its not possible to batch stabilize clips. i kind of understand why as each video will have a unique crop that really needs to be manually tweaked for the best results. But for the people that want a whole bunch done at the same time and dont care how much of a crop there is, there definitely should be an option. Maybe in the future soon.
Forsure I would agree. Sony seems to be on the slower side with updating their software. I think they still haven’t optimized for m1 Mac computers, which have been out for months
Nice vid, very thorough of the benefits and small cons of using Catalyst Browse. As others have noted, the stabilization is pretty impressive. Unfortunately, the footage I wanted to apply this to was shot in HD (still early in developing video skills) so loosing a lot of resolution. Obviously, I will fix that in the future.
Ah yes sometimes that’ll get you haha. Reduction in resolution might still be worth the footage actually being stabilized instead of all over the place but yea, 4k much better option
there are some third party lenses that work, but not all of them. and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a database that goes into which lenses work and which one do not.
when you talk about the shutter speed in 5min 50sec is that what you have to adjust BEFORE shooting or is can I adjust it to 200 in catalyst browse please?
That is correct. you have to shoot in camera at a higher shutter speed than normal, like 1/200 shutter for 24 fps video. you cannot adjust the shutter speed on a video after its already been shot.
@@TymekStolarz thx a lot bro, but I still cannot see where do I adjust this manually. Only in shutter priority, but I always thought that is for photography only. If I was shooting in 4K 25fps and I select the video on my camera and press MENU I only see AUTO SLOW SHUTTER which was ON. But I did get that blur, you are showing in the video and wanted to get rid of that.
i think you should be shooting in manual where you can control shutter and aperture. shutter speed should normally be twice your frames per second (1/50 for 25fps, 1/100 for 50 fps, 1/200 for 100fps) so if you are in full manual, you can change your shutter speed to 1/200 if you are recording 25fps
its hit and miss with 3rd party lenses. some work some dont. my 17-28 Tamron Lens does work with Catalyst browse. Unfortunately i havent been able to find a resource that specifies which lenses work and which ones dont work with CB.
Since the 4k video quality will be lowered, better I record in 4k and make 1080p video. Or...better of just record in 4k and use gimbal. Will that help pls?
Hey great video. I'm just editing my first videos after using A7C so it came in handy. Do you have tips about how to use Catalyst at the same time with FCPX? Is it ok if I edit the videos if they are located in the Original Media folder?
As far as I can tell I believe you need to keep them separate. You need to bring the original clips into catalyst browse, do the stabilization and export the new clips; then bring them into Final Cut Pro, copying them into the Final Cut Pro project or working with the new stabilized clip from original folder should be the same either way. I don’t think you can stabilize a video that you’ve edited already in Final Cut Pro.
I took a while when switching off the camera so the clip has loads of shake at the end. Unable to Trim off the final part in catalyst browse before processing for stabilisation. Any idea how to trim in this app? The output from FCP is not getting stabilised :(
Are Tamron lenses not supported for stabilization feature? I'm only seeing footages that I took with Sony lenses in Catalysts' browser tab. I have tried manually loading some videos taken with Tamron 28-200mm, it seems that stabilization data does not even exists. "Stabilize Clip" menu in Catalyst is grayed out and not clickable. Do you know what's the issue here?
Sorry to hear that :(. i have heard that some people have issues with some Tamron lenses. But truthfully i thought it was only with manual lenses. i have the 17-28 Tamron and i am able to stabilize it. it seems like its hit or miss with 3rd party lenses unfortunately. i've tried to look online to see if anyone has created a database of which lenses work and dont work with Catalyst but it doesn't appear that that resource has been created.
Am I understanding it right that you can use Catalyst Browse Stabilization only for the internal recorded clips from the camera? (from a gyro data capable sony camera) A Ninja V would not record gyro data from such a camera, would it?
Hmmm. That is a really good question. Unfortunately that would have to be something you have to test out. It’s possible that the gyro data would also be recorded when using the ninja, but i can see it needed to be recorded in camera for it to work.
@@TymekStolarz Thank you very much for the answer :) I don't have a ninja v yet :D But you are right, I will buy one and test it out By the way, I have subscribed. You do a really good work :) But your chanel is way too underrated unfortunately.
My ninja v arrived and I have tested it out. Unfortunately it doesn't work. :/ I have recorded Clips in ProRes, ProRes RAW and DNxHR. None of them had gyro data. Catalyst Browse can't even read DNxHR, only DNxHD. So I put the DNxHR Clip into the software called "Gyroflow". It could read it, but no gyro data. (Gyroflow can usually read gyro data from Sony's XAVC formats and from a GoPro and a few more) Catalyst Browse can't read ProRes RAW, so I put the ProRes RAW clip into "assimilate play pro" to transcode it. No gyro data either. I haven't tried out to record in H.265 on the ninja, because I would have to purchase it separately, to activate it. But it's unlikely to work, because the other formats didn't work out either. (I have used the Sony a7sIII for all recordings) My biggest hope was, that I could use the stabilization of the ProRes Raw recorded clip, because it has 4.2k of resolution, and not "only" 4k. In that case I could have saved some loss in resolution while stabilazing it :D I hope your chanel grows quickly :)
ah thats too bad, im sorry that it doesnt work. But thank you so much for updating me, now i will be able to let people know when they ask in the future. Thanks again and take care
Thanks for sahring the video. I found there is an issue when I import the video to the Catalyst Browse. I wanted to stablixe the video(It did show the Stablize icon at the top right), but system showed "The clip doesn't contain metadata for stabilization. Stabilization has been canceled ". Don't know why :( p.s I use Snoy A7C
That is very strange. have you tried some different frame rates and bitrates to see if its happening to all of them? unfortunately i havent seen this type of problem so im not sure what it could be. Best bet would probably to reach out to Sony Creative Support on the Catalyst browse page. they usually respond to support tickets pretty quick.
Good video! I just purchased a couple new Sony cameras (A7C & ZV1) and was eager to utilize Catalyst Browse. I have a Lenovo Legion 5 with a 4GB Nvidia GPU. I keep getting an error when trying to utilize Catalyst Browse saying, error rendering and insufficient GPU memory. I just bought this laptop. What can I do? Thank you!
Hm that is odd. Is there any other computer you could compare it with? The only thing I can think of is to update your video card as it might be outdated. Otherwise if you reach out to the “Sony creative software” team i found them to be very helpful.
@@TymekStolarz Well it's a brand new laptop that I constantly update, but I can check. I've called several Sony numbers with no help. They refer me to places that weren't helpful. If you have any info regarding that, I'd appreciate it. I've hear that this is a common problem so download the previous version works better, however the previous version is not available anywhere. Especially for PC which I use.
Oh I thought if it was super brand new it may have been possible that the GPU company may have put out a new version after it was manufactured. Plus I find gpu updates weird - from my experience it doesn’t prompt you, and it’s not until something stops working thag you have to go to their website and update the driver. Yes overall Sony support isn’t great as they are all in different departments and they sometimes send you to the wrong one, I’ve definitely been there lol. www.sonycreativesoftware.com/support/catalyst If you follow the “contact support” prompts on this page it should lead you to an email request box at some point specifically for catalyst browse. If it doesn’t take you to that section let me know and I’ll double check, I’m out of the house now and was trying to find it on my phone.
Do you know why the footage I shot with in-camera active stabilization is also showing the stabilization icon in Catalyst? I thought it had to be off. I'm using an RX1007 which also records gyroscope metadata.
So for best results its recommended to turn off in-camera stabilization. i show an example of what happens when you try to catalyst stabilize an already stabilized video. But it will still show you in catalyst that that the video can be stabilized.
Good morning :) Unfortunately it is not possible to stabilize multiple clips in 1 step, each clip has to be stabilized separately. It’s annoying but I kind of understand as the automatic stabilization amount is often too much, and I usually can zoom out an extra 10 percent and still get stable footage.
How much time is needed at pc to use catalyst Browse in post for a video with 30 Min length? I have got a Sony ZV E10, a ryzen 5 2600 cpu with a GTX 1060 3 GB gpu and my OS is Windows 7.
thats a good question, but i think it would be pretty long. every machine is different but i would say you should expect render times to be between 3-6 times as long as the clip itself. 30 minutes would definitely be a lot to stabilize haha.
looks like at 8:12 i mention that the export "can take quite a bit of time" lol, not very specific. its just hard to estimate how long an export can take depending on your machine. im sure some much older and slower machines could be even slower than 6 times the length of the clip.
I would like to thank you very much for your great tutorial - I have learnt a lot about this Catalyst Browse which I have only just discovered. But it confirms what I have always thought: get the best footage possible at the time of taking - in this instance, stabilization. There are just too many problems with this post processing which is in danger of ruining your footage. The shutter speeds you quoted to improve stabilizaton, for me, are out of the question - it compounds low-light grief as does banding in artificial light. The argumentation between camera stabilization and software stabilization isn't helpful either as is the loss of full 4k. Catalyst is smooth without doubt but, again for me, I see it as just a party piece that works in certain circumstances. I wouldn't trust my valuable footage by turning the in-camera stabilization off at the risk of inducing weird artifacts in order to smooth out my footage. From what I have seen from your video, some people's idea of this software being able to replace gimbals is pure fantasy.
Yes i would totally agree with you. it depends what you need the footage for. in almost every professional situation where highest quality video is required, using catalyst browse for stabilization is out of the question. until software can stabilize with regular shutter angles it is like you say, completely out of the question, and we will always use a gimbal instead. But for home videos, or videos shot just for memories, having this software as an option to stabilize your footage is pretty cool. i shot my engagement video that i have on my channel mostly with in camera stabilization (we hiked a mountain so a gimbal was out of the question) but i did pepper in some shots that i kicked up the shutter speed and used catalyst browse stabilization for, and its basically undetectable. but none of the shots are too long, and they are mixed in with regular shutter angle shots. i also had to benefit of being outside with ample light so that was also very helpful.
Hello Tymek! My problem is that when I press export the rendering stops at 4% and then it says error rendering incomplete I do not understand why it happens? I have a pc with windows 10 and the requirements of catalyst are less than the capabilities of my pc.
hmm thats a little strange. unfortunately i havent seen that so im not sure how to fix it. normally this is something that you see with M1 macs. i would reach out to support directly. if you go to the website you downloaded catalyst browse from, theres an option to contact support on that main page in the top left corner. they usually get back to requests pretty quick.
No it does not. it messes up the stabilization, which i show examples of in the video. i think its because active stabilization locks the sensor, which needs to move freely to record gyro data accurately. So you have to pick, stabilization in camera, or all in post.
hm interesting, where did you see that? I do plan on eventually testing out the A7IV's stabilization but it should generally be quite similar to the A7S III. I will test out keeping other stabilizations on as well, and see if that makes a difference. I dont see why the A7 IV would be much different than the A7S though
That’s a good question. I personally don’t have an M1 chip; but a quick google shows some people having some issues but the posts are from 2 and 4 months ago. When I reached out to Sony support a month ago about an issue I was having they did say that it wasn’t even optimized for Big Sur yet, and especially if I had an m1 Mac it could also be causing the problems I was seeing. If I had to guess I would say it has not been yet.
that unfortunately could be occurring for multiple reasons. i think your best option would be to reach out to Sony Creative Software directly to troubleshoot the issue.
@@TymekStolarz already found the problem because application is not supported latest Intel graphic driver. The problem is I can not downgrade graphic driver because I'm using win11. Fastest solution I need to disable Intel graphic driver before launch that app. But I found new problem I can not analyze video during the stabilize process 😅😓
So do you mean like the S-i Codec? I haven't seen anywhere a mention that compressed codec's increase motion blur. Do you have a resource handy i could look through?
@@TymekStolarz yep. Their s-I codec. I’ve only seen quite a few videos mentioning recommending to shoot uncompressed to let the software do better with fine movement … and they skipped over the obvious part you hit on - pump up the shutter speed. So I figure a combo of the two might work too. Technically motion blur is blur. I get that. Uncompressed won’t change blur. However. When compression codecs take effect …. Fine movement like leaves in a tree moving … get jumbled pixels more. Those details will be preserved better with uncompressed. Anything you do to help the software detect pixels should help …. In theory I just got my sony a7iv though so I still have to test this out (coming from a7iii). Great vid btw this helped me quite a bit to learn about catalyst browser.
Yea that makes sense. i've been meaning to test this out for a while now. to see how much the compression actually changes things. i did do a codec comparison, using movement, but i was using a slider to create the exact same type of movement. analyzing the frames of each codec didnt yield any differences. i've been meaning to test a stream, leaves rustling, as well as a green screen to compare the codecs.
@@TymekStolarz if you get a vid out like that it’d be interesting too. Even if it’s just your findings and opinion on it. I do know from using ffmpeg … on older videos that have noise …. The compression types changes the files in a way that it’s not always “h265 is smallest”. Noise introduces some crazy stuff to where in some rare occasions . Low compression has same file size as highly compressed. Because system can tell edges apart easier. (I always just apply a denoise when I’m doing old vid encodes). Same kinda logic could apply with blur. The blur … to the computer … is not very different from noise. But yeah I mean it remains to be tested. Just a theory for now I guess. Kinda makes sense though.
My Catalyst Browse does not recognise XAVC S-I (4k@50fps) files as such, but as XAVC S. Although I can select XAVC S-I as export format. It also doesn't allow me to use manual features. It says for that feature I need to upgrade to the paid Catalyst Prepare software... Is it because I installed the most recent version?
Hi there and im very sorry about the late reply - i think catalyst browse in the dashboard will call s and s-i as just S, but if you look closer in the details of the video it shows Intra S or something. i have never gotten that prompt, and i've always been able to change things manually. i havent used catalyst though in a few months though so they may have changed how the program works.
Who's still shocked about how smooth catalyst browse is? not to mention, I also wish Final Cut Pro had color grading control like Catalyst Browse, anyone else agree?
It quite shockingly smooth. I just recorded a video with a bunch of shots handheld... it is incredible how stable it is!
This was one of the most cogent, informative videos I've ever come across. FIVE STARS!
Hi,
I would like to ask you a question because I have just purchased a Sony ZV-E10 camera and I use "Catalyst Browse" to do my color correction.
DRJ
Great video and very clear
Thank you :) I appreciate it
Awesome video.
Great video.....so is there no way to do the stabilsation in batch mode on all clips?
Another user told me that if you buy catalyst prepare, batch stabilization processing does work. i havent tried it out myself though
Insanely brilliant information and presentation. No fat. Just facts. Impressed. Subbed.
Thank you very much :) i try to be as direct as possible. thanks again.
The best video I've seen - amongst many - on this topic. Thank you 👍
THank you for the kind comment :)
bro, that was comprehensive as heck! I got Gerald Undone vibes. 10/10, subbed, your channel is an asset
Thanks so much! That is an extremely generous comment I appreciate the kind words :) I hope you have a great day!
Superb video about Catalyst Browse Stabilisation. Do you have an update on a better fix for post motion blur yet? Cheers
Thank you! :) unfortunately not. I think having reduced motion blur is just a permanent limitation of using the software. As you saw adding it in post isn’t the best but depending on how you want something to look you might think it looks better then nothing at all.
So much good information! I keep coming back to this video as a reference guide. Thank you.
Thats so awesome to hear, thank you so much. im glad it helps :)
Great video, what shutter speed would you recommend for 1080p30fps?
Thank you :)
I think I was around 1/ 200 or 250 for 24p so I think around there should be fine enough for 30fps I would maybe do a test shot or two, and if it’s still too shaky just crank up the shutter speed a third of a stop
@@TymekStolarz and one more thing.. What is your settings to shoot in slog mod?
for catalyst browse specifically? I would shoot the same settings for any of the picture profiles. the shutter speed always needs to be higher and i would just change the exposure with aperture and ISO
thank u for the comprehensive review, keep it up tymek!
Thank you very much, i really appreciate it :)
Can you stableize multiple clips, thanks for your help
Hey there :) I’ve never done it myself but some other commenter said that if you get catalyst Prepare, it allows you to batch stabilize clips.
However it isn’t free. There may be a free trial available though to test out the software
Thanks a lot ! Very instructive and clear video !!
Nikon d750 vs canon 5d mark iv please comparison
Haha, I do want to make more camera comparison videos so I will consider putting this one on the list!
@@TymekStolarz thanks my friend
No problem :) best of luck in your creative endeavours :)
Thank you for your video, but I didn't get the point in what frame rate and option I should take video in alpha 7 mark 4 , to stabilize the video ?
Is it possible to tell catalyst browse not yo use the gpu? And just use the cpu? Grat videos by the way ! Thank you!
unfortunately i do not think it is possible :(

keep making these video! you are so good at making them!
Thank you so much, i appreciate the encouragement.
Is there a way to batch stabilize? The stabilization process takes a really long time if you have many files.
hi there and im very sorry about the late reply - the only way i have heard is if you use catalyst prepare, which is the paid version.
Czesc Tymek,
I have a problem because it does not stabilize at 50fps, but at 25fps there is no such problem (it stabilizes both with body stabilization turned off and with standard and active stabilization). My body a7SIII.
Thanks for this! Just found your channel and this is really helpful! Downloading this software for my A7S3 handheld rig
Not a problem! Glad I could help :) If you have any questions on this, or any of my other A7s iii videos I’ll be happy to answer them.
is it free ?
Very helpful, thanks!
is it also better for colour grading compared to premiere pro?
@@TymekStolarz i agree!
Thanks for watching and I hope you have a great day :)
Grate video bro. I am wondering how does it compare to warp stabilizer in PPro or AE
from what I've seen warp stabilization has some serious wobble as well. I think the technology is quite similar to the final cut pro stabilization. So Catalyst browse is probably the best you can get but the high shutter rate is a serious drawback.
Is this software can use to stabilize sony a6300 video clips..??
Good morning :) So Sony provided me with this webpage: (support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/app/disoft/en/#catalyst)
If you scroll down to the Catalyst Browse section, and click "* The SteadyShot function is supported on the these models." it shows which Sony models are currently able to use the metadata stabilization. Unfortunately it looks like at this moment the a6300 is not included in that list. however if you have the camera it might be worth seeing if the stabilization icon comes up for your clips. or even reach out to Sony and ask if they may be introducing a6300 compatibility in the future.
dude! another great video!
@@TymekStolarz alright sounds good Tymek I'll give that a shot. Thanks for the quick response back.

Will it get rid of rolling shutter on the zv e 10?
unfortunately i havent seen a program that reliably gets rid of rolling shutter.
Do 3rd party lenses from Sigma and Tamron work the gyro stabilization and 'active' mode stabilization using Sony mirrorless cameras?
its hit or miss which lenses work. some third part lenses work, others do not. however all lenses will work with the in-body image stabilization
Very nice video. Nice tip on exporting in Intra. I did not realize that. May I ask what the difference is between Sony Class 300 and Sony Class 480?
Oh nvm it is 480MB/s
Yes that is correct, sorry i didnt reply quicker. and thank you for the kind comment :)
Can you help me out?
hey! does it work on the m1 MacBook? thank you
Good morning :) i've seen some people have some problems with M1 in the past. i dont have access to one at the moment so i cant test it out unfortunately. last time i talked to Sony Support, which was months ago, they said they didnt have official support for it yet, but i think it was working for some people, albeit with a few glitches here and there.
Hi Stabilisation does not work for higher bitrate when shoot in a cfexpress card ..Any help will be appreciated ..
When importing in fcpx using the own import feature it removes gyro data so there is a need to copy using finder or import from the sd card,
yes i would import to computer, stablize in catalyst and export. then bring the exported video into final cut pro.
Is it possible to stabiliaze all files in folder?
If I have 50 mp4 files in folder I should stabilaze every file 50 times? :-|
I can't stabilaze all files in folder for one click?
Thanks for the info before I mess around with Catalyst Browse myself. I appreciate the tip about 8 bit exports.
Not a problem :) yeah that was something that took a while to figure out why it was happening and how to fix it.
This was incredibly helpful! Thank you for going through all the effort of making this tutorial!
No problem, and thank you for the kind comment :D
Nice coverage of this software! Thanks!
Thank you very much :) I appreciate your kind comment :)
I'd love some M1 optimization soon though
oh interesting. so just to confirm, you were able to batch process stabilization through Prepare? if so thats great to hear. a lot of questions i get on this video is if its possible to batch process. yes they are really dragging their heels on m1 support, its been over a year, its crazy.
what about rolling shutter does this software correct that to.
No unfortunately I don’t believe it has a feature for fixing rolling shutter.
Super useful Informationen. Thank you!
Glad i could help, thank you so much for the comment :)
Wow, great workflow step for previewing clips prior to bringing them into a video editor like FCP or Adobe Prem. But, why doesn't make it easy to 1 to 5 start clips to organize or anything.? Gues that's why it's named: Browse and not Organize. lol
haha exactly. catalyst prepare may have better functionality but it is a paid program which i have not used.
will stabilization be made available for the sony ex1r on catalyst ?
Does Catalyst Browse run on the new Apple M1?
hi there, sorry about the late reply, i was waiting for a reply from sony. i was about to download it on my m1 macbook pro 13'' and am able to stabilize it seems, but it is very slow and glitchy. the image screen tears, it cant hold any type of decent frame rate, and exporting a 1.5 minute video took probably 10-20 times longer than on my intel imac. now the imac is a lot more powerful then this m1 but sony did say they dont officially support m1 yet. this is the same answer they gave me at the beginning of 2021. i think potentially the newer m1 pro and max might do better but i think its simply not optimized, so although its possible to use it, its not very fun. but the exported clip i tested seemes to have worked and is glitch free so thats good.
@@TymekStolarz I appreciate all the effort you went through. Definitely very helpful. I did end up pulling the trigger on an m1 MacBook Pro. Haven’t received it yet, but I guess I’ll see. Thank you again for such a great response. Happy thanksgiving to you and your family.
not a problem :) . just out of curiously which m1 did you get? thank you, and to you as well
@@TymekStolarz it’s a 14 “ MacBook Pro m1, ordered it from the Apple website for $1999 (didn’t read all the specs) I figured it’s gonna be a lot faster then my 2016 MacBook Pro. Although now I’m not sure when it comes to catalyst browse. I also use Adobe premiere, hopefully that runs smoothly.
oh nice! yes that should be significantly stronger than the 2016 macbook pro. have you tried catalyst browse on that computer?
So the best is to film in XAVCS. Should camera stabilization (IBIS) be disabled ?
From what i saw, it didnt exactly matter which codec you used. Personally i mostly use HS. yes IBIS and active need to be turned off for stabilize in catalyst browse to work properly.
My stabilized footage turns black can you make a video tutorial to fix it?
DOES THIS WORK WITH A7SII I need the answer ASAP
That 180* shutter rule limitation is a deal breaker.. Bummer... Thanks for the video!
Its definitely not great. I think it has its applications, but probably not an option in professional settings. I wonder if its possible for the software to be updated to get you similar results with a proper shutter angle.
works for a6400 too? thanks!
@@TymekStolarz thanks! a6400 stabilizer is crap so I hope catalyst works for it. Thanks again for your answer
No worries. I will get back to you as soon as I hear from Sony :)
Will this work with the AX700 camcorder?
I tried to look up the camera and If it’s the one I think I found release in 2017, I would say unlikely. It seems like only newer cameras released after 2020 or 2021 are able to stabilize in catalyst browse
How do you do stabilize multiple clips at a time on catalyst??
unfortunately at the moment its not possible to batch stabilize clips. i kind of understand why as each video will have a unique crop that really needs to be manually tweaked for the best results. But for the people that want a whole bunch done at the same time and dont care how much of a crop there is, there definitely should be an option. Maybe in the future soon.
Tymek Stolarz forsure, have to do it every clip manually is time consuming …
Really good video! Thank you!
And thank you! That is very kind of you to say and take the time to comment :) I hope you enjoy the rest of your day
does it have to have OSS sony lens or it will work with sony non-OSS like the ZIESS and 50mm FE
there are some third party lenses that work, but not all of them. and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a database that goes into which lenses work and which one do not.
Does this software work with linux?
when you talk about the shutter speed in 5min 50sec is that what you have to adjust BEFORE shooting or is can I adjust it to 200 in catalyst browse please?
@@TymekStolarz thx matę makes sense
Do you have to have native glass for this to work. I used my a7iii with tamron 28-75 lens, and was not allowed to stabilize.
its hit and miss with 3rd party lenses. some work some dont. my 17-28 Tamron Lens does work with Catalyst browse. Unfortunately i havent been able to find a resource that specifies which lenses work and which ones dont work with CB.
where can i download this software?
You can downloaded it here :) - www.sonycreativesoftware.com/catalystbrowse
Since the 4k video quality will be lowered, better I record in 4k and make 1080p video. Or...better of just record in 4k and use gimbal. Will that help pls?
yea it would be best to record in 4k so that u lose less quality when you crop in
Hey great video.
+ I'm using A7C
Sorry to hear that :(. i have heard that some people have issues with some Tamron lenses. But truthfully i thought it was only with manual lenses. i have the 17-28 Tamron and i am able to stabilize it. it seems like its hit or miss with 3rd party lenses unfortunately. i've tried to look online to see if anyone has created a database of which lenses work and dont work with Catalyst but it doesn't appear that that resource has been created.
@@TymekStolarz Thanks for your input! I'll try experimenting more with lenses I have.
no problem, best of luck :)
Am I understanding it right that you can use Catalyst Browse Stabilization only for the internal recorded clips from the camera? (from a gyro data capable sony camera)
A Ninja V would not record gyro data from such a camera, would it?
Hmmm. That is a really good question. Unfortunately that would have to be something you have to test out. It’s possible that the gyro data would also be recorded when using the ninja, but i can see it needed to be recorded in camera for it to work.
@@TymekStolarz Thank you very much for the answer :)
I don't have a ninja v yet :D
But you are right, I will buy one and test it out
By the way, I have subscribed. You do a really good work :) But your chanel is way too underrated unfortunately.
Let me know how it goes if you test it out :)
Thank you very much :) i really appreciate the kind comment.
My ninja v arrived and I have tested it out. Unfortunately it doesn't work. :/
I have recorded Clips in ProRes, ProRes RAW and DNxHR. None of them had gyro data.
Catalyst Browse can't even read DNxHR, only DNxHD. So I put the DNxHR Clip into the software called "Gyroflow". It could read it, but no gyro data.
(Gyroflow can usually read gyro data from Sony's XAVC formats and from a GoPro and a few more)
Catalyst Browse can't read ProRes RAW, so I put the ProRes RAW clip into "assimilate play pro" to transcode it. No gyro data either.
I haven't tried out to record in H.265 on the ninja, because I would have to purchase it separately, to activate it. But it's unlikely to work, because the other formats didn't work out either.
(I have used the Sony a7sIII for all recordings)
My biggest hope was, that I could use the stabilization of the ProRes Raw recorded clip, because it has 4.2k of resolution, and not "only" 4k.
In that case I could have saved some loss in resolution while stabilazing it :D
I hope your chanel grows quickly :)
ah thats too bad, im sorry that it doesnt work.
Don't know why :(
p.s I use Snoy A7C
Yes overall Sony support isn’t great as they are all in different departments and they sometimes send you to the wrong one, I’ve definitely been there lol.
www.sonycreativesoftware.com/support/catalyst
If you follow the “contact support” prompts on this page it should lead you to an email request box at some point specifically for catalyst browse. If it doesn’t take you to that section let me know and I’ll double check, I’m out of the house now and was trying to find it on my phone.
@@TymekStolarz Hey thank you so much for your help!! I'll definitely check into these things. Thanks!!
Not a problem, glad I could help in some way. If you have any questions in the future I’m always happy to try and look into them.
@@TymekStolarz Thank you
Świetny materiał 👊🏽
Bardzo dziękuję :)
hi. can youstabilize all the files together? i mean....in one step stabilize all the archives and not one for one? thanks and sorry for my english
Good morning :)
Unfortunately it is not possible to stabilize multiple clips in 1 step, each clip has to be stabilized separately.
@@TymekStolarz OK...why does nobody mentoin this important detail?
looks like at 8:12 i mention that the export "can take quite a bit of time" lol, not very specific. its just hard to estimate how long an export can take depending on your machine. im sure some much older and slower machines could be even slower than 6 times the length of the clip.
Hi I recorded in 4k 25p 100M ( pal ) and stablisation is greyed out. DO you need to record in NTSC?
Hello Tymek! My problem is that when I press export the rendering stops at 4% and then it says error rendering incomplete I do not understand why it happens? I have a pc with windows 10 and the requirements of catalyst are less than the capabilities of my pc.
hmm thats a little strange. unfortunately i havent seen that so im not sure how to fix it. normally this is something that you see with M1 macs. i would reach out to support directly. if you go to the website you downloaded catalyst browse from, theres an option to contact support on that main page in the top left corner. they usually get back to requests pretty quick.
@@TymekStolarz Thanks i"ll do it!
Sorry i couldnt be any more helpful :( i wish you the best of luck and if its an easy fix let me know so i can direct others if they ask :) take care
Can this work when A7s3 using active stablization?
No it does not. it messes up the stabilization, which i show examples of in the video. i think its because active stabilization locks the sensor, which needs to move freely to record gyro data accurately. So you have to pick, stabilization in camera, or all in post.
@@TymekStolarz I heard that A7M4 can combine active stablization and Catalyst Browse. Could you also do a comparision? Thanks!
hm interesting, where did you see that?
I do plan on eventually testing out the A7IV's stabilization but it should generally be quite similar to the A7S III. I will test out keeping other stabilizations on as well, and see if that makes a difference. I dont see why the A7 IV would be much different than the A7S though

Has it been optimised for the M1 chip.
@@TymekStolarz thanks - I'd imagine it'll get done soon.
Hopefully. It’s crazy how long some of these things take. What m1 do you have? I’m hoping to get the new iMac 27-30 inch when it comes out

Ah fair enough. I wish I had the budget to have a laptop for on the go but a super higher spec’d out desktop style computer when at home.

Catalyst browse is free, catalyst prepare is the paid version. you should be able to download CB for free to use the stabilization
Awesome video man!

I have issue app crash when launch on my laptop omen hp 16 win 11, I don't know ho to solve the problem
that unfortunately could be occurring for multiple reasons. i think your best option would be to reach out to Sony Creative Software directly to troubleshoot the issue.
You can also try recording with the uncompressed video format to reduce motion blur. Might give you more wiggle room with frame rate
In theory
I just got my sony a7iv though so I still have to test this out (coming from a7iii).
