    One of my recently discovered favourites is 'Out of Scale' - apart from the beauty of the drawings, and the general accuracy, this was Ward Kimball and co having a gentle laugh at the hobby they shared with Walt. Walt and his back garden railroad even appeared on thew cover of a 1950's French model railroad magazine.

    • @WaltsNephew
      @WaltsNephew  4 года назад +6

      I whole-heartedly agree with you, Out of Scale is a marvelous picture paying homage, and a quick giggle, to Walt's Carolwood Pacific. I think trains are some of the most complex and ingenious ways of expressing animation, especially when done right at the Disney Studio or by Ward

    Walt's passion for trains was indeed quite remarkable. His life was basically about railroading when you think about it. He had an uncle who was a train engineer whom he looked up to. Plus the trains and train-like rides at Disney parks make it more obvious. Truly a great celebrity railfan. One of the top reasons I admire him

      I completely agree with you! Of all the Foamers in the world, Walt is probably the best, followed closely by Ward Kimball haha It is my personal opinion that even though it was all started by a Mouse, it was really started by a love of trains

And seeing as how I've looked up to Walt since I was a wee lad, I thought it only fitting to use the title Walt's Nephew as my RUclips profile name

      @@WaltsNephew That would've been awesome if you were. Guess what, 9 years ago I wrote a letter to the Walt Disney Company about an idea for an attraction. The idea was a passenger train owned by them which would've taken people on cross country trips but it would've been pulled by a steam locomotive designed to look like Casey Jr. from Dumbo, kinda like the one that looks like Thomas that the Tweetsie Railroad has. They sent me a letter back which I kept to this day. They loved my idea and were so glad to see how thoughtfully creative was. But they couldn't accept my idea due to a policy of theirs which doesn't allow them to accept ideas from non affiliates. Truth be told I wasn't expecting them to accept it but all I wanted was a reply back from them which I gladly did get. Which is why I kept their reply letter. It's a treasure to me.

    Walt was a huge rail enthusiast, and he was in good company. His fellow animators Ward Kimball and Ollie Johnston were also railfans. Walt also had his own ridable backyard train that he called the Carolwood Pacific Railroad. And because of this, almost all of the Disney parks include a railroad.

    • @WaltsNephew
      @WaltsNephew  4 года назад +11

      After the strain of near bankruptcy during the War years, Walt really needed a hobby so that he could get away from the Studio. Enter Ward offering to take Walt to the Chicago Railroad Fair, and the rest is history hahaha Just imagine if trains weren't part of Walt's life; the Parks would look very different, if they existed at all

    Merry Christmas 2020 A.D., from the GB&W Live Steamers Union!! Walt,s backyard live steamer is a 4-4-0 American built in 1873 in the Sacremento Shops of the Central Pacific RR. It is built to 1:8th scale at 1&1/2" inches equals=1' foot, with 7&1/2" guage track. Walt had his backyard railroad built into the side of the hill, with a lower level. And a upper level with tunnels and bridges. But then a rain storm and landslide destroyedost of it. The loco is Number 173, and named "Lilly Belle" to honor his wife. He built the wheels in the Studio machine shop lathe with Mr. Brodie helping him, and Bob Harpur. The loco and some cars are preserved by the Los Angeles Live Steamers Club in Griffith Park, close by to the Travel town RR Museum. Also zoo and Observatory. Even more next time, Walt knows about English live steamers because his photo is holding 1860era 2-2-2 with open footplate and shiny brass dome, plus, 1950 era photo shows him in England and running 1:16th scale loco for 3/4" to 1' with 3&1/2" guage track on raised up platform. So he might know about early Thomas stories.

      Ahhh, there's a good reason for that. You're right, Sword in the Stone ('63) was the last film, BUT there would have been more if Walt lived longer. So that's why I end it with 1966 rather than 1963. Thanks for noticing!

    Does the reluctant dragon have deleted footage from dumbo in it?

    • @WaltsNephew

      I don't think so. I think Ward Kimball was just having fun and experimenting with Casey's appearance before his finalized version for Dumbo

    • @WaltsNephew

      Well, they do always seem to have some sort of reference to trains somewhere now-and-again. So, in my opinion, they haven't stopped using trains in either films or television haha

    The Fox and the Hound has a train too, but I don't blame you, because of what happened to old Chief when he got Tod on the run.

    • @WaltsNephew
      @WaltsNephew  4 года назад

      You're right, that is a sad moment. But you see, the main reason why I could not include that sequence from "Fox and the Hound" in this compilation is because that was 1981, so Walt had no direct affiliation with that picture. But I will say the engine in there, be it a 4-4-0, Mogul or Ten-Wheeler definitely needed more on-screen time!

    • @davidstrawn9272
      @davidstrawn9272 4 года назад

      @@WaltsNephew wheel arrangement is a good question, I would probably think it's a 4-4-0, because of the diamond smoke stack, and it resembles one from "Lady and the Tramp" in the yard.

      Quite true! I have the feeling the animators might have paid homage to that very same engine

      I mean, engine drivers in Britain almost since the dawn of the railway age have given engines personalities. Sooooo sentient engines belong to the ages hahaha
