Mary Cain, you have the most beautiful smile and tears. You made it through the heroes journey and you show others how to. It’s heartbreaking to hear how you were abandoned in so many moments by your ‘team’. Yet you never gave up on yourself, this is clear. I’m so grateful to hear your story and share your emotions. I wish you much joy in moments you have ahead.

Watched this late yesterday and spent my entire night in a semi-dream state filled with unexamined and unresolved memories of my own experience in an abusive elite sports environment. So much of what Mary talks about resonates deeply. This gifted woman, with her courage to be vulnerable, her incisive mind, open heart, and articulate voice, is also a gift to others. Rich's observations are spot on and add to the gravity and illumination of her story. This is more than a podcast. It's a megaphone.

Hi Rich, just came across this vid with Mary Cain. What an awesome interview. My wife and I were professional runners in the 80's and 90's and my wife, Ruth, won the Olympic Trials 1500 meters in 1984. This was at a time of rampant steroid use, especially with the Eastern Bloc athletes.
What Kara Goucher and Mary Cain have done is blow the lid off the culture at Nike regarding the use of PED's and now, the culture of systemic abuse of athletes. We watched Mary at the NOP and knew something was not right, taking an immensely talented young athlete with a bright future, and ruining her. Fortunately, Alberto is gone for good.
These are 2 of the bravest women we have seen and we are huge supporters of each of them. Kara knows that already. Can you please let Mary know that she has 2 more big fans? Thanks for the great interview!

Wow, what a phenomenal interview and woman. She shared such an important view point on sport. As an elite athlete as a young person, there were so many paralels to my own story that I didn't even remember or recognise had such a mental impact. Thank you for all the work you are doing to make the elite sport space a safer space. Thank you Rich for always holding such an incredible amount of space for the person you are interviewing, a true master of this.

She is a beacon of light not only for women in sports but for so many people across all walks of life. There are a ton of systemic miss-used and poorly-justified assumptions and practices in most disciplines across sport and business. When we see something, we need to say something and she’s proof of how hard it is to do, but also how rewarding it is to us and those around us when we do. Great work, Mary and thanks to Rich for bringing this conversation to light.

I think that’s what Kaepernick’s intent was…”when you see something, say something”. It didn’t work out well for him. And this is why people don’t speak up. Especially when your livelihood depends on those you speak against. Great job Mary! I am looking forward to how this next generation changes some of the toxic culture we have all accepted as normal and ok.

There were times when I just wanted to put my arms around Mary and hug her hard. Abusers and abuse comes in many forms, but fortunately their methods are predictable. I call the process of abuse The Mushroom Syndrome and it's a two-step process:
    1. Keep them in the dark. This means the abuser isolates the person(s) by cutting off contact with parents, family, loved ones, supporters, information and perspectives that gives any hint of challenging the perpetrator's desired narrative.
    2. Feed them shit. Lie to the person(s) the abuser wants to control and anyone that person has access to so that the abuser's narrative is the ONLY narrative. They drive a wedge between the person and their inner voice, inner guidance system, self-confidence, moral compass. Sew confusion, gaslight, claim it was all a misunderstanding or miscommunication.
Where ever there is power or authority over another person(s), there needs to be transparency, clear definitions and boundaries, processes, checks and balances in the system. Kudos to Mary for speaking her truth and becoming a way-shower and building a better way! Thank you both for putting this interview into the public domain. Lots of love!

This was the MOST amazing interviewing. I deeply applaud Mary Cain in her fierce honesty and humility, and sense of purpose and giving back.. An amazing role model.. Please Rich Roll, have more of Mary and women athletes like her! Her intermittent tears were such honest expressions of the trauma and emotional impact of what she's been through.. Her strength to simply allow them to fall and then allow them to pass without particular drama, except for the dramatic import of each story, showed her power and capacity to show up in each moment.. I loved her. Her hard-won wisdom, and easy energy, and her clearly being a "nice" person. More of Mary! Super inspiring!

Mary I'm so sorry for everything you went through and continue to work through. I'm very proud of you and all that your standing up for. Taking the horrible things you went through and using them for good.
I had C-PTSD as well, 58 years old and still working through some stuff. Mine wasn't through sports or being an athlete, but can truly relate. When you cried I cried. I wanted to climb through and just hold you tight. I can totally resonate with where was everyone when they saw you falling apart, breaking down, doing self destructive behaviors?? That was one of my biggest trauma to heal. It's like I was invisible and that's what I got from you. They saw you, but did nothing. It's like drowning and noone throws you a life raft. They watch!
Thank you for sharing your story, thank you Rich for another great podcast. I'm sending you lots of love Mary and big hugs.
Use the amazing support around you and mentorship to heal and propel you to be the best you can be and to make a huge difference in this world. Love to you both. You just helped me heal another notch in my journey. Much love 💘 ⚘🧡🌱🐾🏃‍♀️🤗💛

Thank you Mary for exposing what many of us thought might be going on but were fleeced. What Mary shares with the world opens many "cans of worms". She mentions trust. Learning the food and drug industry cares more about the bottom dollar than they care about people sent me into depression in my 20's then I realized I am glad I now know. Now I know I must be responsible for my path. A parents fear when we see this happens to our kids when we "trusted" mentors that didn't deserve that title. "What doesn't kill us makes us stronger." " Its not what happens to us, it's what we do afterwards". Thank you Mary, you are a brave soul! ☮❤⚖🇺🇸🌎

Mary Cain's story broke my heart for her. I remember seeing the NY TIMES video and feeling so angry against Nike and Salazar. And now hearing Mary open up, in detail about the entire experience 🤬. The only way to force Nike to examine it's shameful behavior and (hopefully) change their programs for the better, is too vote with your wallet. Don't buy Nike gear.
Mary, you are a role model. Your vulnerability, your ability to clearly illustrate what for have been through, to rise from the SHIT you had to deal with stronger, brighter, braver is an inspiration 💖. GO MARY!!!

Her pain is palpable, her intelligence so apparent. Amazing discussion. Amazing person. Kudos to you RR for making this interview a reality and for allowing Mary to further share her story. Make no mistake -- this was difficult to watch/listen/hear at times. She's such a tender soul and was simply gut-wrenching to learn of the abuses she had to endure. How one human being, let alone a behemoth like Nike, could do that to her (and so many others) is sick and sickening. I never liked their ill-fitting gear anyway and they will never get another hard-earned penny of my for as long as I live. Hope others would consider 'speaking' with their dollars as well.
Best wishes Mary. The world needs you and you obviously have an incredibly bright future making this world a better place in which to live. Many thanks Rich.

Jordan Hasay, Sifan Hassan, Shannon Rowbury, Mary Slaney, Trenier Moser were coached under Salazar (besides Kara Goucher and Amy Begley) I don't think it is fair to necessarily demonize Salazar for having such high standards for female athletes. There wasn't this huge breakdown of female athletes under Salazar. He actually transformed most of them for the better (whether or not through PEDS would be a different conversation)

I remember in college running cc, I was running next to this girl she was heavier than I was 115 she had to be about 150. This girl kicked my ass so bad. Some people are built on the be bigger side and it does not affect their performance. Look at some athletes today they don't fit the "type". Mary was so good and what a waste of talent, I feel so bad for her. She was so young and went through so much and still kept her self up. She is physically and emotionally strong, I have so much respect for her. Coaches can be controlling jerks (putting it mildly). This should not have happened and it needs to be fix, come on Nike, be true to your self and admit that you messed up, admit that you fail and do the right thing.... instead of "just do it" how about "Do it right"

    • @igloozoo3771
      @igloozoo3771 2 года назад

To play devil's advocate, it sounds like they treated her like the professional adult and greatest of all time champion that she admits she wanted to be. Did Salazar treat her differently than Sifan Hassan and Jordan Hasay and Shannon Rowbury and Mary Slaney? Although I am not condoning Alberto Salazar's methods (yes, I don't believe he is a clean coach and would dope his athletes), there is a fine line between "Boot Camp" to turn athletes at such a high level into Champions vs outright Abuse. Why is it the narrative as though she was a victim of MeToo or some type of inappropriate sexual misconduct? "Grooming?" I do not believe Salazar had some ugly motive to groom and abuse her based on his other athletes like Rupp who was also "groomed" at a young age to become one of the most successful American Born distance runners of all time.

When you are training hard and operating with a calorie deficit you become more and more injury prone, especially as a woman. Your body cannot rebuild after the stresses of hard workouts and over time, that cumulative stress causes serious problems. Add in a toxic team environment, mentally abusive coaches....you have a recipe for disaster, hence her physical and mental health deterioration.

Running fast = being skinny 😬
This is such a misconception. Yes, weight loss can make running faster easier, but your body will naturally dictate how "skinny" it wants to be provided the nutrition (and everything else) is there to support the actual running. Not everyone is the same size when they reach their speed potential.
