What i like most about the magnus archives ending is the way it ends. Spoilers: . . . . . . . . Basira says at the end “if anyone is listening, goodbye. Im sorry, and good luck.” The implication being that where the tapes went is where the fears went and where did the tapes go? Our world. The implication is that the other dimension they cursed to be faced with these fears… was us… and if you think about it… things have been quite strange in recent years :)
Just finished season 5. Man what a trip. The part where Martin and Basira yeet themselves off the cliff to avoid listening to Jons statement was pure gold
I've enjoyed all of your reviews SO much. I feel your pain of saying, "This is my favorite piece of horror!" and not having people believe you. Because, truly, The Magnus Archives is my favorite piece of MEDIA. Ever. So beautifully-crafted in every way. Jon and Martin are Somewhere Else, living their best life. ❤ If you are searching for other podcasts, I HIGHLY recommend Malevolent by Harlan Guthrie. It is currently going on and is absolutely incredible.
Revolutions is my all time favourite episode of TMA. I cannot get enough of that poetry-type verse it's written in. It literally inspired the style I wrote my A level English coursework in, though I kept it slightly more like normal prose seeing as I had to write 750 words in a pretty short time period lol. I would go on about that episode for hours if I could even find the words to describe how much I love it XD
S5 was also my favorite. The sheer excellence of the prose, the immersive depiction of all the domains, and the Armageddon road trip format with a sprinkle of rom-com in the first half were incredibly refreshing. After the loneliness they both experienced in S4, seeing Jon and Martin finally having each other, being protective and supportive, was crucial for their character development. Martin truly blossomed after experiencing what it means to be loved - he's such a badass in S5, taking no nonsense from anyone. Jon's feelings for Martin serve as his anchor to humanity while he grapples with his godly powers. I think he's never being as open and vulnerable with his emotions as he was in S5, despite not being human technically. And the finale was beautiful. I agree, it was as much of a happy ending as we could hope for - "together, one way or another." And, of course, the Fears escaping into another reality is what brings us The Magnus Protocols, so thank you, The Web 😂
Season 5 was honestly so freaking good!!! The statements are so much more brutal, but also extremely compelling, and I love the final revelations regarding the Web and its long game plan. It was a spectacular wrap up to the original series and just further cemented The Magnus Archives as a piece of media that will stick with me forever. The last episode never fails to absolutely _wreck_ me, emotionally. The ending is both more tragic and surprisingly more hopeful than I was expecting, because Jon and Martin may have survived in the end, or maybe they died together, stopping the apocalypse. Schrödinger’s tragedy, as it were. lol I’d fully braced myself for heartbreak. I’d known for a while before season 5 that the series wouldn’t have a happy ending. (Jonny’s work writing stories for his band The Mechanisms showed me pretty clearly that the dude loves writing beautifully tragic stories. 😅) But I honestly think we got as happy of an ending as we could have realistically expected, given the circumstances. I do personally believe that Jon and Martin survived, and that they’re able to be there for each other, wherever they ended up. It doesn’t make their last moments hit any less hard though. 😭 I cannot WAIT for The Magnus Protocol, and to see what will happen with the new characters! I really hope familiar characters get at least mentioned here and there, and that we get a lot more expansion on the lore. 😁
I absolutely LOVE magnus archives but now every time i watch/read anything horror my immediate thought is to categorize it. Coroline? Stranger with a dash of spider, Dracula? Flesh/Corruption and so on. But not only that but even any magical stuff ever is categorisable now. Any random magical artifact in a non horror story can be a fear artifact of you think about it hard enough Also did you see the trailer for the spin off series?
If you want a recommendation on another Rusty Quill podcast show, I'd heavily recommend The Silt Verses! It's got some amazing characters in it too (while it's technically not done as far as I'm aware it's got two REALLY solid seasons), and in my opinion their sound effects and general audio quality jumped up ten fold in this show.
Hey so sorry, but Francis is actually nb, parts of their torture involve them reliving their family being transphobic :,)
Ah, I did not realize, sorry about that and thanks for letting me know!
@@TheFullSpectrum it’s okay, it honestly took me a few listens to realize (which is kinda embarrassing for me 🧍)

It's an awesome theory, just no
After all of this i still feel like anglerfish is one of if not the best start to a horror franchise

Thank you! I'll have to check out Malevolent!
And TMA is really something special, I'm so stoked for the sequel!

I haven't seen the trailer yet, but I'm going to! Planning to record a reaction to it tomorrow. Didn't get the chance today
