    Sir, I have learnt many things from you. Thank you for your informative content with demo. I'm facing problem in application of rear brake and changing of gears as I stand on the pegs with the balls of the feet in contact. Should I stand with arch contact? Or, quickly shift to arch contact while braking and simultaneously gear down shift?

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz  Год назад

      Good question! The ball of the foot is great for a general technical ride. On a steep downhill, I will move my right foot forward so I can more easily reach the rear brake the whole time. Maybe mid-arch of the foot. When upshifting while going very fast, I will sometimes do the same with my left foot. Once at speed, then back to the ball of the foot. It can be more economical than moving the toe under the shifter and back each shift.

    Nice video! One correction tho: friction has nothing to do with contact patch size. It depends only on friction constant and force. The force is far higher on the front wheels than on the back when braking, that is the reason. Every second channel gets this wrong, please don't spread it, ppl are putting bigger tyres on cause of this...

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz  3 года назад +2

      Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. 👍
      For sure, tire grip is a complex subject and not discussed in detail in this short video.
      The intended message was to illustrate how friction increases as the weight of the bike shifts forward and compresses the front suspension & that a progressive application of the front brake would result in a more “useable” contact patch. An over-simplification on our part.
      Thanks for highlighting the fact that friction is independent of the contact area. Other factors such as temperature and tire deflection do have direct effect on friction and can be influenced by how the brakes are applied as well.
      Great to have you here and appreciate your insights.

    As always excellent work, thanks.
    In summary: ABS off (front and rear), use both brakes = shortest stopping distance?
    What about ABS on but only front? Modern ADV bikes can have sophisticated off road ABS these days - should we experiment with front ABS on or off as well?

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz  3 года назад +4

      Thanks very much for that.
      Always experiment with your bike’s controls to learn how each reacts and decide how you prefer your set up to be. Aside from the built-in capabilities of the bike, every rider will have their own preferences.
      Things like rider’s skill level and experience along with terrain, type of tires, gear on bike, etc will all factor in.
      The more you experiment and more experience gained (this goes for new riders as well as riding veterans) then the easier your decision is.
      My 2016 bike will always give more efficient stopping power with the front brake versus the rear.

    This might be a bit late but do I pull the clutch while braking or just pull it in before a stop. Thanks so much. Great content by the way :)

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz  Год назад +1

      That is a great question 👍🏻
      It is important to downshift as you are braking so that when you come to a stop you are in a gear that you can drive away in and not stall the bike.
      In an emergency braking situation you don’t have time for the engine to act as a brake so the clutch will be pulled in the whole time while braking. 👍🏻
      Just remember to downshift too as the bike is slowing down.
      Thanks for watching 🤝🏻

    The surface area has nothing to do with friction, only surface material. It is the increased weight on the front tire as the weight shifts forward, that increases the friction.

    • @advmotoskillz
      @advmotoskillz  3 года назад +2

      Yes, friction is independent of the contact area.
      The intent the graphic was to highlight that with a progressive application of the front brake, the front tire will carry more load due to the compression of the front shocks, therefore it will have more traction.
      Unfortunately, trying to simplify the topic in the graphic it ended up being mislabeled.
