I've lived in Colorado for many years and spend a lot of time outside and always get a kick out of these graupel storms that can happen any time throughout the year. A few years ago we'd just had a really spectacular graupel storm on the US Air Force Academy. I encountered a young AF officer and asked her if she'd seen that graupel storm we'd just had? She informed me she was a meteorologist and there was "no such thing as 'graupel'." I asked, "You're new here, aren't you?" She said she was. I then told her, "Well, welcome to Colorado where we have graupel storms."

She couldnt have been a real meteorologist

There's even a METAR code for graupel, so funny a meteorologist didn't know about it.

I'm 'graupel-ing' with this new term. Learn something new (or try to) every day.

Saw some falling today in Palm Springs, CA twice. Once mid morning, and it only lasted maybe 30 seconds and was about the size of a pea. Then later in the afternoon some more graupel fell that was noticably larger and fell long enough to accumulate on my yard. It all melted about 20 minutes after the storm passed.
FYI, there was no thunder/lightning associated with this today.

I've seen this in winter for years, just never came up with a phrase. Wikipedia finally did. Neat stuff. Styrofoam didn't exist when I was a kid, so I didn't have that word to help find a name for those tiny snowballs.

It isn't a new word you silly American. I have weather books printed in the 60's and 70's that mention it. Just highlights the failure of the American school system. Hopeless.
