Qala movie REVIEW | Sucharita Tyagi | Triptii Dimri, Babil Khan | Netflix India

- Qala the movie, doesn’t draw its strength so much from its story, which is rather short and concise, as much it does from its aura, and sorry for the lack of a finer word….vibe. I mean, have you HEARD the songs?

Qala review by Sucharita Tyagi - I couldn’t find discernible reasons WHY Qala is a period piece, a confusion probably in place by design, like we discussed shuru mein, ki kitni cheezein badal gayi hai, aur kitni abhi bhi waheen hain. Male dominated fields mein auratein are looked at as “female this and female that”, something Anvita Dutt has ample experience with, at one point being the only female song writer active in mainstream hindi cinema. Iss movie mein unke lived experience ka saar, jaayaz gussa milega. Bulbul ki tarah hi Qala bhi qaid mein hai, khidki pe khade hokar duniya dekh rahi hai, kab udd jaayegi, kisi ko pata bhi nahi chalega. When a woman determined to own the spaces she occupies, is denied agency, the choice between exploding and imploding is but a split-second decision.

Be decent people,
Sucharita
Qala ki music album mein favorite gaana kaunsa hai bataao? Shauk and Rubaiyaan for me.
‘Ghodey pe Sawaar’ has that Classic O.P Nayyar touch to it.
Those two, but at 1 Nirbhau Nirvair. Thanks for the review.
Same here
shauq
My favourite track is Phero na najariya
Even the title board of qala, most people will mistake the Q of qala for the symbol of female but it is actually the symbol for mercury from astronomy.
Mercury plays a huge character in the sense that Qala is mercurial.
She poisoned Jagan with mercury but in that moment she poisoned herself too indirectly afflicting her sanity.
After that we mostly see in her silvery grey sarees as the mercurial effect gets stronger and finally leading to her demise.
Beautiful observation. Just love it!
You're absolutely right!
Spoiler alert to bolo bhai
The ‘Women telling Women Stories’ trademarked by Sucharita is a Classic. I love to see it!
Love to do it!
Saw the movie before I saw the review. After watching it, told my wife, “I’m sure Sucharita has done her women telling women stories dance in her review”
Love it ❤
Broke into a small applause when they gave a small tip of the hat to Black Swan..a similar mother-daughter relationship film centred around mental health and pursuit of perfection.
Glad I'm not the only one to see that!
Yes! I am surprised because the nod to black swan is so obvious and no one seems to be mentioning it
Kala = art
Qala = space or emptiness
The most closely related things in life. And guess the crux of the movie.
I tried to search for the meaning of the name Qala but no where it is written that the meaning is 'space' or 'emptiness'. Instead it means 'To begin' in Hindi, 'fort/castle' in Arabic. 🤷
@@FluffyLovie its a Urdu/farsy word.
@@FluffyLovie Qila is castle/fort. Not Qala.
@@harinderkaur4515 Yep I know right!! That's why I was looking for the meaning, but I couldn't find 'emptiness' or 'space' as the meaning of this word.
@@relativelycivilized2786 Okay gotcha!! Maybe you are right! It's just I can't find it anywhere on the internet. I found 'to begin' or 'start' as the meaning. But if you have any references I would love to see it. 🙂
I noticed that in Qala’s thoughts Jagan is always decked up like a prince. Even when they are sitting in the ghats there’s a shadow play of merry-go-round horses! It’s like the unattainable love that forever haunts us.
Yes. I too saw the romance there. Though it’s showcased for us to perceive n not spoon fed. And she consciously (qala )herself doesn’t realize it since her sole aim was to win the recognition from her mom.
This has to be one of the most aesthetically and musically hindi movie I have seen in a long time. Tripti with her performance has all my heart. Also Babil owns the screen with his charismatic presence. Swastika ki aankhein yaar ❤
It’s for the first time in Hindi cinema we’d see a mother daughter relationship ❤
2nd, Darlings is also there
Tribhanga is also a notable film that deals with mother daughter relationships.
I forgot the name but the movie with Vidya Balan where she's a maths genius, that also had a complex mother daughter tale. otherwise, bollywood's idea of mother daughter is a dead Tina instructing her 8 year old daughter to reunite her husband with his ex flame
also, I found The Fame Game a brilliant story in terms of Mother-Daughter relationships over 3 generations. Granted, it's a series and has a lot of elements, but Anamika's relationship with her controlling mother, and her protectiveness for her daughter who wants to join the murky world of bollywood really was fabulously portrayed
Secret Superstar, Shakuntala, Tribhanga, Darlings
It isn't exaggerated anguish. Just think about the complexity of her neurosis/illness. I think Tripti nailed it. Beautifully well.
Babil khan reminded me of how irrfan khan sir must be proud of him ❤
In my thoughts whatever qala did. she did for her mom's attention it was never about music or gagan even the compromise she did it was just to go forward so her mom will like her achivement and love her but when she released the she is trapped in all of this chaos and her mom is still not understanding she takes her life.
Yes...seeking validation from parents who never praise... You are nothing...comparing to others... It is like a cautionary tale for parents
Swastika is a gem in bangla cinema, she deserves national recognition and more ❤️
exactly agree with U
DARLINGS, MONICA O MY DARLING & NOW QALA!! BOLLYWOOD IS GIVING US THE GEMS WE DON'T EVEN DESERVE!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank god for Netflix who is green lighting these brave and creative movies!
Monica o my darling is stupid.
“Queen of Awadh Malcha Marg Vibe” is a line that needs to be used more often!
We really need a bulbbul spin-off ASAP
It reminds me how late actress lived in those times classic tales
We need to praise the fact that such time period pieces are being made and we always compare to the west and never look into our own history. This was a brilliant attempt again. Such great visuals, alluring and deeply oriented sound. We have so much more to explore from our own history as a country. There is nothing more diverse than us! Big congratulations and thanks to the whole team! P.S. Movies can have a female majority cast and be spectacular!
Along bad parenting SOMEWHERE deap down Qala^s mother blames Qala for his twins son death. she said Qala is kOYAAL. SHE was so disappointed after knowing that dead child was son , sadnees in her face made clear that she wanted son so badly that later she brings jagaan home. Even she tried to kill baby Qala with pillow. World was cruel but her mother was 1st persoon in her life to break her beleive. All she wanted was her mothers love en believe in her.
I like how you described Siddharth Diwan's cinematography as "deft" this time around unlike the little slip of tongue that you had while Bulbbul's review! :P As usual your review has tugged at my heartstrings as well, will watch the movie asap!
hahahahah ek baar mistake ho gayi dobara nahi hogi
Is it just me or did someone get reminded of Mahesh Dattani’s Bravely Fought the Queen while watching this movie? I got reminded of the play due to its fantastical elements, the play of light and shadow as well as the mention of thumri which was often a no go territory of women from ‘good’ families. I also loved the Japanese aesthetic used for Qala to portray her innocence and at the same time it reminds us of the fallacies especially when she gets into the silk nightgown thing. I also loved the use of organza sarees in this movie and we also get a slice of the fantastical aura created in Bulbul when Qala is on the terrace beside the unfinished Howrah bridge. Truth be told, I didn’t really like Bulbul, but this film just hit me hard, especially due to the use of dreamlike fantastical elements that blur the line between reality and psychosis.
Similar to bulbbul Qala is also held captive we don’t know when she’ll run off 😢
Tripti was fantastic.My goodness...what a memorable performance.
I am still not over the film 😭
the trailer gave a major Black swan vibes, looking forward to watching this.
I was thinking the same thing when I first saw the trailer.
Black swan is a copied movie itself
Same, Have Gate in feb post that will make a video comparing "Black Swan", "Whiplash", and "Qala".
@@jagratrajrana what is it copied from?
So I am not the only one! I had major Black Swan vibes too, and I was super worried it will not live up to the hype in my head. hopefully it does
Swastika and tripti are brilliant and heartbreaking
I watched Qala.. Cinematography, set up and the decision making time when Qala decides to take things in her hands the dream+real scene was awesome
Subeh se chaar baar RUclips khol k "Sucharita tyagi qala" search kar chuki thi 😝
main aayi aayi aayi aayi
@@SucharitaTyagi ajaaaaaaaaaa...
Your reviews are always reliable. Thank you. Also, when the review has sentences that are difficult for me to grasp, it usually means the movie is that complex :)
No one noticed the Bengali
Cinema influences? The music director is a blend of many bengali heroes including Uttam Kumar! He reminded me of Mithun also. Was surprised to see he is Punjabi! Brilliant portrayal of toxic masculinity and its albeit sleazy charms!
For me Tripti was a delight to watch, but the story felt very very predictable. The songs were beautiful ❤️
The best Qalakars in the Hindi Film Industry have come together to make Qala - what else could we ask for as cinema lovers? The details in the film are subtly telling their own stories - weave under the weave!!! As a woman with difficult relationships with her own parents - this movie hit home! Swastika deserves more recognition for the body of work she has already done - she is phenomenal in this film too! The music is takes me back to an era I have never been a part of but I understand....LOVE
I watched it and need to see it second time to get all layers. It is so beautiful the way jealousy, ragerage, hidden trauma, anxiety, depression and intergenerational issues are shown. You want the messed up mother to care eventually at some level to feel that she did care in her own messed up way.
This movie is very similar to Hollywood movie black swan.
Tripti is awesome. Story is beautiful. All the songs are mesmerizing. Did not like Babil's acting much... Climax is dark... It reminds of that scene when Babil's charac faints or something and Tripti's charac holds him and they are in the same maze shape bg. Its same shape as that game from which she takes the mercury. Her mother is also a bit disturbed... She sees Babil's charac as her son that she lost and she hates Tripti's charac for their death... I think her mother knows that it was her who killed him somehow... The scenes which show the predator casually asking for sexual favours as if nothing has happened is spine chilling. Surely such things really happened then and maybe even happen today. Varun Grover's presence is soothing though... He brings some hope... Very beautiful movie... Just wish Marathi actresses get protagonist roles instead of just side character... I am glad that the movies are now showing how dysfunctional mother-daughter relationships can be. Even though the bond is strong and can never break, it's not always a good thing. Cruel mothers exist.
BABIL KHAN IS GOING TO BE THE MAGIC ON SCREEN ❤❤ HE IS A MASTER ON THE SCREEN ❤TRIPTI IS TRULY A GENUINE ARTIST ❤ THE DIRECTION IS 100% skillful , the writing by the director itself is genius
This is probably the first time I watched movie after your review otherwise it's other way around just because the trailer intrigued me. I was right the movie was hauntingly beautiful I think you were slightly unfair to the movie's storyline specifically. Its mother daughter story and so many issues incorporated in this one movie mental health, casting couch, professional rivalry etc.
Glad you liked it, aur kya chahiye
Lovely to hear the mix of Hindi and English words that you have crafted for the review! Intrigued to watch the film now
halfway through the review going to go watch the movie asap!
My god... First comment... ❣️❣️❣️ I love your reviews, sometimes more than the movie itself.
thank you :)
Tripti is so promising ❤❤❤❤
Two things - I rushed through the movie just to watch your review… coz I knew dono classy honge - WTWS. And secondly Abhishek Banerjee’s line was “Aap sochiye mat…”
Yes!!
Something really mesmerising to watch....is the Qala !!! 💛🤍💛🤍💛
Love your reviews , yesterday was about to watch this film , but thought first will look at your review and then decide. I loved the way you explain and choose the vocabulary to describe the complexity of the films sure will watch it
First view, yay! I was waiting for this movie ever since I saw the trailer. Loved your review as always - Fun and Energetic. Thank you Sucharita
Same
No review of Bhediya?
Hi Sucharita, I love your reviews! Can you please review Bhediya as well? I decide whether to watch movies or not based on your reviews 😅
Not worth it
Was looking forward to the Bhediya review (haven't seen the movie because of that). Any particular reason it was skipped?
Cause it wasn't worth it
It was a genuine question from end. She has reviewed all kinds of movies. I am genuinely curious as to why it was skipped. Whatever else I have heard from twitter, it seems like a decent movie, but would have loved to see what she had to say. Even Bharadwaj Rangan has also not reviewed it for some reason.
I remember her saying during her film companion days that she doesn't watch / enjoy the horror genre. and while Bhediya is all out horror, but as she had watched Drishyam and also She Said, I feel she skipped it as her schedule was full (just a guess)
@@kyakasooramlakavms Aah ok. Makes sense. Thank you!
Majru has fully our heart ❤
A colossal disappointment.Though I was really excited about the film since the soundtrack dropped, had my reservations as I had major issues with Bulbbul as well.
Qala is a product of what happens when you don't intend to tell a convincing story but stitch bits and pieces of ideas just because you want to make movies as other great filmmakers did. Nothing in the film seems cohesive. Neither the script, nor the editing. The monumental talent of the actors was completely wasted. The screenplay doesn't build towards the predictable end. Rather it achieves to stop at all the touchpoints and jump to the next. I wonder how this film would turn out in the hands of a better writer-director.
"Nothing seems to be cohesive".. that was the point of it all... It was from the POV of an unreliable narrator going through mental health issues and bouts of psychosis..
You did not get the film at all.... Its a different way to tell story.
Unfortunately u didn't just get the film....
Cool review. Very intriguing movie. Looks beautiful.
From the trailer it feels more like the black swan movie....
Haha - I just logged onto RUclips singing “women telling women stories” and yours was the first video 🙌🏽
Yayyy
two words - BLACK SWAN
Absolutely loved Qala 😍 ❤️ ♥️ 💖 💕 💙
Hey @sucharita have you watched the Swimmers on netflix yet?
What if bulbbul met nagin
Sorry for bombarding the comment section, but tell me that you didn’t get Sawariya vibes from certain parts of the film, especially during the boat scene?
Wow!!! This is such an intriguing film!!! 😮😮😮
Movie felt depressing. But liked it
Loved watching it today..
Hi Sucharita, love watching your reviews and critics. Please would you review Nazar Andaaz on Netflix and interview the actors. Xx
I just can't stop sobbing after watching this movie, I don't know why.
What a amazing movie this is . Just wow❤
I m gonna watch it twice now.... for sure... I was waiting for reviews from last 2 weeks
SUCHARITA WHAT ABOUT TRIPTI'S PERFORMANCE..YOU DIDN'T TALK MUCH ABOUT IT🙄
Please also cover how this movie is extremely problematic-
How Hindi Cinema portrays the very real pressing issues of Sexism in a family where the Girl is always treated like a second grade citizen, not appreciated for her talents, sidelined, traumatised, diminished - only to make space for the boy who is treated like a golden prince of some sorts and then yet again they blame the woman for having valid jealousy, rage, insecurity, betrayal trauma and indignant anger
The girl wouldn’t be crazy in the first place if she was not driven crazy by a patriarchal society, son-obsessed parents, a society that only thinks men can carry on the legacy, a society that aches when it witnesses women be anything besides subordinates and labels any free thinking woman with dreams as MAD EVIL CRAZY UNSTABLE, too sensitive or too rough.
And they made a spectacle out of this movie that in its own way gaslights women of the very real patriarchal abuse happening in Indian Households.
Got me in splits. Madame aap sochti bott hai 😂😂😂 which one of us have not heard this
Your review will force many to watch the film including me!
Come here for women telling women stories moment❤️❤️
Hope everyone watches this movie 😍❤️🔥💕💓❤💗

Superb Movie 👏👏👏👏👏
Your review also watch deaf people.........body language very good
:-/
Going to put in my comment before I watch your review. I thought it was pretty unforgivable that a moody musical drama had such unmemorable songs and was so predictable. Trupti was very good and kinda reminded me of Natalie Portman in both her looks and her work. Otherwise, it felt very trivial overall. I blame the weak script.
unmemorable to who? i can't stop listening to the music, especially rubaiyyan
Swastika is our legend. I'm so glad the country is now recognising her art.
I liked the movie....every frame is like a painting.....beautiful
Ganay apart...this film makes no sense. Everyone is just abusing gas lighting and then committing suicide
Well that's what happens! A truth of how mental health it. Least what you could learn is that you should not be that sort of a person.
Oh man this movie was such a drag😪
One thing I hated about the movie, this movie could actually create a reasoning for suicide
1)If u can't achieve goal,actor commited suicide
2)If u have mental pressure,actor commits suicide
I understand trauma caused it,but a movie should not influence weak minded people .Everyone go wild when other movies does something little bit problematic but this one is being called masterpiece.
Tripti ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Are you doing a review or a dance.
waited for Wong in a post credit scene

Rubaiyaan is the best hindi song of 2022 for me. Hands down!
