  • Qala the movie, doesn’t draw its strength so much from its story, which is rather short and concise, as much it does from its aura, and sorry for the lack of a finer word….vibe. I mean, have you HEARD the songs?

Qala review by Sucharita Tyagi - I couldn’t find discernible reasons WHY Qala is a period piece, a confusion probably in place by design, like we discussed shuru mein, ki kitni cheezein badal gayi hai, aur kitni abhi bhi waheen hain. Male dominated fields mein auratein are looked at as “female this and female that”, something Anvita Dutt has ample experience with, at one point being the only female song writer active in mainstream hindi cinema. Iss movie mein unke lived experience ka saar, jaayaz gussa milega. Bulbul ki tarah hi Qala bhi qaid mein hai, khidki pe khade hokar duniya dekh rahi hai, kab udd jaayegi, kisi ko pata bhi nahi chalega. When a woman determined to own the spaces she occupies, is denied agency, the choice between exploding and imploding is but a split-second decision.

Even the title board of qala, most people will mistake the Q of qala for the symbol of female but it is actually the symbol for mercury from astronomy.
Mercury plays a huge character in the sense that Qala is mercurial.
She poisoned Jagan with mercury but in that moment she poisoned herself too indirectly afflicting her sanity.
After that we mostly see in her silvery grey sarees as the mercurial effect gets stronger and finally leading to her demise.

I noticed that in Qala’s thoughts Jagan is always decked up like a prince. Even when they are sitting in the ghats there’s a shadow play of merry-go-round horses! It’s like the unattainable love that forever haunts us.

Such great visuals, alluring and deeply oriented sound. We have so much more to explore from our own history as a country. There is nothing more diverse than us! Big congratulations and thanks to the whole team! P.S. Movies can have a female majority cast and be spectacular!

Is it just me or did someone get reminded of Mahesh Dattani’s Bravely Fought the Queen while watching this movie? I got reminded of the play due to its fantastical elements, the play of light and shadow as well as the mention of thumri which was often a no go territory of women from ‘good’ families. I also loved the Japanese aesthetic used for Qala to portray her innocence and at the same time it reminds us of the fallacies especially when she gets into the silk nightgown thing. I also loved the use of organza sarees in this movie and we also get a slice of the fantastical aura created in Bulbul when Qala is on the terrace beside the unfinished Howrah bridge. Truth be told, I didn’t really like Bulbul, but this film just hit me hard, especially due to the use of dreamlike fantastical elements that blur the line between reality and psychosis.

Tripti is awesome. Story is beautiful. All the songs are mesmerizing. Did not like Babil's acting much... Climax is dark... It reminds of that scene when Babil's charac faints or something and Tripti's charac holds him and they are in the same maze shape bg. Its same shape as that game from which she takes the mercury. Her mother is also a bit disturbed... She sees Babil's charac as her son that she lost and she hates Tripti's charac for their death... I think her mother knows that it was her who killed him somehow... The scenes which show the predator casually asking for sexual favours as if nothing has happened is spine chilling. Surely such things really happened then and maybe even happen today. Varun Grover's presence is soothing though... He brings some hope... Very beautiful movie... Just wish Marathi actresses get protagonist roles instead of just side character... I am glad that the movies are now showing how dysfunctional mother-daughter relationships can be. Even though the bond is strong and can never break, it's not always a good thing. Cruel mothers exist.

Qala is a product of what happens when you don't intend to tell a convincing story but stitch bits and pieces of ideas just because you want to make movies as other great filmmakers did. Nothing in the film seems cohesive. Neither the script, nor the editing. The monumental talent of the actors was completely wasted. The screenplay doesn't build towards the predictable end. Rather it achieves to stop at all the touchpoints and jump to the next. I wonder how this film would turn out in the hands of a better writer-director.

Please also cover how this movie is extremely problematic-
How Hindi Cinema portrays the very real pressing issues of Sexism in a family where the Girl is always treated like a second grade citizen, not appreciated for her talents, sidelined, traumatised, diminished - only to make space for the boy who is treated like a golden prince of some sorts and then yet again they blame the woman for having valid jealousy, rage, insecurity, betrayal trauma and indignant anger
The girl wouldn’t be crazy in the first place if she was not driven crazy by a patriarchal society, son-obsessed parents, a society that only thinks men can carry on the legacy, a society that aches when it witnesses women be anything besides subordinates and labels any free thinking woman with dreams as MAD EVIL CRAZY UNSTABLE, too sensitive or too rough.
And they made a spectacle out of this movie that in its own way gaslights women of the very real patriarchal abuse happening in Indian Households.

Going to put in my comment before I watch your review. I thought it was pretty unforgivable that a moody musical drama had such unmemorable songs and was so predictable. Trupti was very good and kinda reminded me of Natalie Portman in both her looks and her work. Otherwise, it felt very trivial overall. I blame the weak script.

Ganay apart...this film makes no sense. Everyone is just abusing gas lighting and then committing suicide

One thing I hated about the movie, this movie could actually create a reasoning for suicide
    1)If u can't achieve goal,actor commited suicide
    2)If u have mental pressure,actor commits suicide
I understand trauma caused it,but a movie should not influence weak minded people .Everyone go wild when other movies does something little bit problematic but this one is being called masterpiece.
