When the Game is finished, the same water will be recycled for snowmaking, irrigation, and other uses. This ‘reduce, recycle and reuse’ concept is, of course, no different from that being applied by earlier hosts also using artificial snow. 2. Budget & costs - the 2022 Beijing Winter Games budget is USD 3.9 bn, a low value in comparison with the actual costs incurred in Sochi’s USD 50 bn or Pyeongchang’s USD 12.9 bn. Of course, the estimated final costs of the 2022 Games are not yet out. If anything, the Beijing Winter Game will be one of the more economical games! 3. Low-carbon venues - 5 of 16 facilities are existing ones built for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games that have been retrofitted for the Winter Games. These include the iconic Birds Nest and Water Cube. All avenues have been certified by IOC as ‘low-carbon footprint and carbon-reducing solutions’. The China Olympic Committee has committed that these facilities will be used to support and promote ongoing winter sports, and some (like the Olympic Village) will be converted to hospitality and other uses. 4. Renewable energy - For the first time ever, the host will use 100% renewable energy to power up all venues and facilities. Its power need is served by a 500 KW solar and wind plant at Zhangjiakou, which will continue to supply electricity to Beijing and its surrounding areas after the Game. 5. Natural carbon dioxide cooling system - Also, for the first time ever, the host will apply the revolutionary natural Co2 cooling systems for all ice avenues. This technology reduces the carbon footprint on the cooling process to nearly zero and has a massive advantage over the HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons) which are proven to damage the Ozone Layer and contribute to global warming. 6. Low-carbon Transportation - China deploys low-carbon transport in the Games. Fuel efficient and clean-energy vehicles are used accounting for 100% of all passenger vehicles and 85% of all vehicles. 7. Beijing, Zhangjiakou, Feb 13: Most snow events are postponed due to heavy snow today. This is exactly why we need "fake snow" or controlled snow conditions in the first place, for safety and fairness.
The context was energy usage due to pumping water up one hill per day. I think she meant the energy usage would be comparable to a small apartment building. Although they definitely could have cut that better
A balanced view should be: Beijing used 2008 venues for the ice events, and build the new venue for snow events where snow is man made. If you just want to. Be negative, please make a statistics of individual houses who own private swimming pool in the US and calculate the amount of water needed?

Natural snow structure differs between regions/countries, with different density, hardness and water content and is not stable, using natural snow would be unfair to athletes who are not familiar with this type of snow, while artificial snow is more stable and complies with IOC standard.

The 'story teller' at WSJ on this story, is either not a skier, not a skater, or they are roller-skater at most. can they not understand that, most athletes trained on artificial snow now a days? Freestyle snowboards, halfpipe, GS etc.
3:33 A quick question to Dr Madelene Orr: With almost all ski resorts using artificial snow (or fake snow as WSJ love putting it), and majority of people trained in this condition, what is the point of the movement calling for natural snow only for Winter Olympic at professional level? Shouldn't we start from ground up? Shouldn't we relook at reassessing winter sports facility only to small minority group of people if Sports Ecology Group cares about the environment? The use of artificial snow started in the 80's, was there anybody care about that? Pyeongchang 2018 use the same amount of artificial snow. Dr Orr did not mention anything about that. Did she just woke up from winter hibernation after 2018 WO? There's an elephant in the room for sure. p/s: i know, someone'd 'scientifically' expressed Pyeongchang 2018 used '98%' artificial snow, can someone educate us here how that 98% came about? By hour of snow fall during the Games? by inches of snow fall? what's the baseline? As we write, outdoor events delayed due to snow storm. are we happy with abundant of natural snow now?
Which Olympic didn’t use man made snow ? A lot of ski trails in US use “fake” snow in winter. This is the best part of public service . So because China used it , now it became a bad thing ?

For all critics, you guys can live in your imaginary wonderland, and all pretend to be environmentalists. In reality, not every country wants to, or has the capability to host a game in this size. And by the way, do you know hosting such a game usually loses money? in billions. Criticizing China for fake snow that is just a cheap shot.
They are talking about the China in their imagination, not the real China on this planet. I was once asked by an American people what the weather is like in China. I don't know how I can answer him. First of all, Zhangjiakou area is not short of water, and there are large and small reservoirs and rivers around it. Also, the temperature in Zhangjiakou and Beijing is very cold in winter. The largest reservoir in the surrounding area is the Guanting Reservoir. The reservoir covers an area of 230 square kilometers and has a total storage capacity of 2.2 billion cubic meters

As I watched some of the Beijing Olympic 2022 events I was struck with the quality of the installations and the snow-making results, and this is before I even saw any videos of the process (like this one). No bald spots, puddles or surfaces that are too hard, and the athletes certainly aren't complaining! It is truly remarkable how collective and individual efforts from the Chinese have produced such quality thru ingenuity and resourcefulness. It's amazing that this excellent effort is accomplished during the Covid19 pandemic!
But here we go again. The West will find every (mostly fictitious and petty) reason to poo-poo on China. This video has a number of errors that others have already mentioned below. The big difference is that the West's focus is mostly the competitive and commercial aspects, while in China it is a source of national pride more than money. Their achievement is to be commended.

With almost all ski resorts using artificial snow (or fake snow as WSJ love putting it), and majority of people trained in this condition, what is the point of the movement calling for natural snow only for Winter Olympic at professional level?

Most of our north American ski hills rely heavily on man-made snow, no?
This Chinese region just doesn't have enough snow this year. Usually it does. What can they do? And by the way, do you know hosting such a game usually loses money? in billions. Criticizing China for fake snow that is just a cheap shot.

Just now I checked the temperature of Beijing, it is -7 to 8 degree today. Does it call summer destination? So they should choose a place that is always under 0 degree?
Its not just about the temperature. The problem is that it is dry. That region has a precipitation of 4.8mm in February. Pyeongchang has 49mm with 12 snowy days at the same time, Sochi has 134mm, Vancouver 104mm, Turin 47mm... Being cold doesnt mean snow.
@@JK-tq7bi Beg to differ.
Temperature is the primary requirement.
Without temperature, outdoor events might have to be accomplished in puddles.
Smoothness of running scheduled events will be very subjective, if natural precipitation is the primary source. Imagine, that the whole outdoor events are scheduled within limited time.
To the untrained readers, those precipitation numbers listed on your comment seems convincing that Sochi is the absolute best venue. Unfortunately, all venues listed on your comment used fake snow as shown in record, using fake snow is not new, it's the only way to have outdoor stayed consistent and fair to all athletes.

- Showing audience how environmentally unfriendly this city is by using this much of water
- Pull out a few 'experts' to convince its audiences for the same
- Beijing-ZJK being a Winter Olympic (WO) venue is absolutely not a good idea
- The choice of word 'Fake snow' goes well in targeting this city/country, better than what they used to describe: 'Artificial snow'
For WSJ, it's not about:
- What's in Beijing's mind and consideration for doing this
- How WO host city selection process is, in regards to use of water and artificial snow
- Use of artificial snow has been a norm in recent WO regardless of which city it is
- What other environmental approaches Beijing had done way better than any other host cities in the past
