This video is a treat. I was born in Youngstown when my parents were living in Girard, OH. My dad was working as a disc jockey at CD 106. About a month later, we left for Green, a suburb of Akron, OH. So I've always been relatively close to Youngstown but never knew much about the city besides its struggles in recent decades. I hope to visit soon and check out a bit more of this neat little city. Thanks for you work on this, Joe!
I BET the first thing you said to yourself when you came back was "I got off of the WRONG EXIT" LOL...I grad in 72 So I am sure you are in that window too...You left and we HAD a actual city...NOW ? NOTHING but politicians and EMPTY LOTS !!
Thanks for doing this! It's so nice to hear someone say positive things about our city. Here we are a year later and the first two buildings you showed at the beginning aren't vacant anymore! The Youngstown Flea bought up the minimill building and Penguin City Brewing moved into that Republic building.
Nice job but you HAVE to get a photo of Mr. Peanut on the Firefighters Memorial Bridge. As a kid in the late 70s and early 80s I always gave it a glance to make sure it was there.
@@seventhedarkoracle9227 The recent story I heard is that ironworkers welded it up there as a prank in the mid 80s and it has been up ever since, except for a bridge rebuild about 15-20 years ago when it was taken down. I recall people complaining that they missed it so it was painted and welded back up. The thing is, I remember it as having a green color, the same as the bridge, and being up at least as early as the late 70s/early 80s. I used to ride my bike to YSU several times a week and had to go under the bridge. That was 1978 to 1984 and it was up then. You had to look for it as it blended in. The current way it is painted (with eyes and all...) was not on it originally. Originally the entire thing was painted with the same green color as the bridge. At the time I noticed it in the late 70s no one knew the story about it either. I have a hunch it was up a long time before I first saw it.
Akron had alot of those same streetlight poles during the 80s and 90s. Akron however made changes to the streetlight poles in the downtown area in the mid 2000s.

I’ve lived in Youngstown for five years now and have been asking about the Peanuts guy… is there a back story?
