I grew up on the Sharon Line, but left at 18 when I moved away for college. My father worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube, and later at General Motors (GM). It wasn't a bad place to live in the 60's and 70's despite the high crime rate. It's heartbreaking to see how the city has deteriorated since the mills shut down, and now GM is closed too. Thank you for documenting this.
Hi Jeff. This is Carrie. You remember I married Nippy. He died in 2010 and I miss him alot. We were married 33 yrs n had 3 children. Well hope your well. Nice seeing you online
I've always said you know you're in Youngstown when you can't tell the difference between a lived in house and an abandoned house. I've lived in Youngstown my whole life.
From Youngstown. It’s sad to see but still love where I grew up. It’s a tough town. It’s made me who I am today and wouldn’t have the success I do now if I didn’t grow up here.
Living in East Liverpool, OH I thought I saw some of the worst that Ohio had to offer, but as I've grown up it seems like most of Ohio has gone through the ringer. I used to go to Youngstown State University and it always pained me to drive through these neighborhoods. I hope with time Youngstown can recover because this place has a lot of heart behind it, it just needs a little love to get going again.
I grew up in Warren, just north of Youngstown. My grandfathers worked in the mills - Van Huffel and Republic Steel, and my dad was at GM. Both my kids were born in Ytown. I stayed until my 30s, but there was nowhere left to work. Moved to SC, then FL. Warren looks almost as bad as Youngstown. Sad how far the area has fallen. Lot of good hard working people there. And some great pizza!
Unlike everyone in this thread I’m actually from the Eastside. Not Liberty, Hubbard, Poland, Niles, Warren, Canfield, Austintown, Boardman, but Youngstown. This video shows the worst parts of the city but not the nice areas of the city.

I used to drive around Youngstown about 10 years ago for work and it was quite depressing seeing these once lively neighborhoods and large homes deteriorate. Downtown there is some revitalization but I didn't see many other areas in good shape.
Westlake, Briar Hill, The Victories, Plaza View, Hayes Jr. High, Albert Street, Lala Land. I have good memories of all of these areas. My mother still lives in the home my father had built for us. Good times 😀
Definitely visceral to see our city like this, and I understand you're seeking out the blight, but they're a ton of great people, art, buildings, and neighborhoods claiming it for themselves. To be clear, i feel every city has many faces. Thanks for sharing.

Unless you’re from Mars, what happened to Youngstown and many other rust belt cities and towns (Check Gary, IN) isn’t a mystery or a conspiracy or a politics. This video shows the aftermath of economic catastrophes from decades ago. It’s simply the closure of the primary employers. First the mills, which employed area folks for generations and then GM-Lordstown. No jobs means people leave. When people leave, businesses close. If folks aren’t working at those good paying mill or GM jobs, they can’t afford to keep up their homes. With fewer people and fewer businesses to contribute property or sales taxes to the city, services like maintenance and repair of streets suffers, schools close, neighborhoods are emptied. The same cycle

Born and raised in the YO !!! Grew up on Avon St off of Youngstown Hubbard Road on the east side. Wasn’t bad in the early 80’s, now it’s just bad. No employment from all the steel mills closing and now GM closes. Drugs and violence are running rampant all over the city. It’s where I was born, and it’s where I’ll die. It’ll always be home !!!
I have a question for the locals of Youngstown, particularly the east side. I was driving through the Sharon Line neighborhood once, and noticed that several streets are completely abandoned and reclaimed by nature, some of which have even been barricaded by the city. I heard somewhere that Youngstown was supposed to peak at almost a quarter-million residents at one time and those areas were built for future housing, therefore when the steel mills collapsed some of them were never even built. Is that true?
As someone who’s been born and raised in SoCal (SD) I can’t stand any more “perfect” weather and neighborhoods, Ohio has a strange beauty to it that i am craving - I’m actually planning on moving to Ohio real soon. Probably gonna try Cleveland at first but i was considering Youngstown later on when I can afford to buy some property.
