- Thanks for watching our video on How to descale your Delonghi Nespresso Lattissima coffee machine. The model used was EN520W.
This video is broken down into sections to guide you through the process of descaling your machine.
Nespresso recommends descaling your machine when the cappuccino button (bottom right hand side) shows a steady orange light.
The Nespresso descaling kit shown in this video contains 2 sachets of descaling solution along with machine descaling instructions.
Once you have completed the descaling process, you can start making great tasting coffee again. I have listed some of my favourite coffee pods, used in my machine, at the end of this description.
VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS:
1. PREPARING YOUR MACHINE FOR DESCALING (0:29)
Turn machine on (0:37). Ensure any pods that are in the machine chamber are released (0:54). Empty waste collection tray to dispose of any pods/liquids (1:00). Empty old water from water tank, replacing empty tank (1:10). Then refill water tank with approx. 500ml fresh water (1:21). Put a sachet of descaling solution into water tank (1:53) & put back onto machine with lid closed (2:14).
2.DESCALING YOUR MACHINE - APPROX. 10 MINS (2:24)
Open panel under where milk container sits & take out hot water nozzle (2:46). Open flap where milk container normally attaches & securely attach hot water nozzle (3:06). Cappuccino button will now flash orange indicating machine is now in descaling mode (3:15). Next put a suitable sized container to hold up to approximately 1l of fluid under the coffee outlet & hot water nozzle (3:50). Press the cappuccino button (flashing orange) to start the descaling process (4:07). The light will then change to blue & will flash alternatively between the cappuccino button & latte macchiato button (top right) (4:12). Wait until cappuccino button is flashing orange again to indicate end of descaling (5:47). Empty away the descaling solution from the container taking care (5:50).
3. RINSING YOUR MACHINE - APPROX. 5 MINS (6:08)
Get drip tray & empty away any excess fluid caught whilst descaling (6:23). Then take water tank off & rinse thoroughly, several times, to ensure no descaling solution is left in tank (6:40). Next fill water tank with fresh cold water to maximum level (7:10) & put back carefully on machine (7:25). Then put the container back under the coffee outlet & hot water nozzle to catch fluids from rinsing (7:36). Press the flashing orange cappuccino button to start the rinsing process (7:45). Again the light will then change to blue & will flash alternatively between the cappuccino button & latte macchiato button (7:56). When the machine has finished rinsing it will stop and will turn off (8:33). Take away and carefully empty the fluid caught in the container during the rinsing process (8:36).
4. EXIT DESCALING MODE ON YOUR MACHINE (8:52)
Firstly open panel that holds hot water nozzle (9:05). Detach the hot water nozzle and put in panel - taking care no hot fluids are left in pipe, closing panel (9:07). Close flap - where milk container normally goes into machine (9:18).Empty drip tray again to ensure no excess fluids remain, making sure rinsed thoroughly (9:25).Put drip tray back into machine (9:41). Finally, wipe over with damp cloth to remove any excess liquids which may have escaped (9:49).
Then turn machine back on and if descaling has been successful, the cappuccino light will no longer show a steady orange light (10:20).
You can start making great tasting coffee again once the descaling process has been completed successfully!
PLEASE NOTE: Sometimes, you may need to repeat the above descaling process if cappuccino light continues to show a steady orange light after turning machine back on.
We hope you find our video useful. The Nespresso machine is used in many countries worldwide including the Australia, USA, UK, Italy, Spain & more.

This was the only video that helped and ive had my nespresso machine for 5 years now
You're welcome. Glad the video helped 🙂
Thank you. I hate reading instructions from an instruction manual, this made it much clearer watching it done on screen!
Glad the video helped. Thanks.
This is so much better than just the pictures in the descaling booklet thankyou
Great explanation, not sure why someone would dislike this video???
Perfect explanation. Not all hero's wear capes!! Thanks ☺️
Hi Ibrahim Ali. No cape needed! So pleased you found the video useful and you thought it was a perfect explanation. Many thanks for your kind feedback ,really appreciate it 😀
This is my 2nd Keurig coffee maker of this model. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf The first worked fine for more than 2 years, and I could still get a decent cup of coffee out of it if I fiddled with it when I decided to replace it. The problem I had with my first unit was this: When attempting to brew a cup of coffee, the unit would either keep brewing until the coffee was undrinkable or it would not run long enough and the coffee produced was way too strong. I cleaned the unit as best I could but it did not help. So in the end it was just too much trouble to get a good cup of coffee out of it, so I decided to replace it with a new one, which has been working great since I unpacked it.
For people who enjoy making coffee at home, especially cappuccinos, and have a machine similar to this one or something similar, if you're unable to purchase expensive cleaning solutions, I use white vinegar. Here are the steps: Pour 500ml of white vinegar into the backwater container, then press the last button in the bottom right corner (the milk button) to initiate the descaling process. Once it finishes, fill the water tank and repeat the previous process without the vinegar. After you're done, the machine will be ready to use without the need for expensive cleaning solutions. Enjoy your delicious coffee!
I can vouch for the white vinegar as well. Works great!
Excellent clear instructions! Like Callum, I have to watch the video every time!
Thanks! You're very welcome
Thank you so much. I was given my machine from a friend, who got it from a friend, so no book came with it. I only recently have had little milk come through. After watching your youtube, WOW, problem fixed. When you showed the little piece to put into milk hole, I didn't know that existed. Nor did my friend. So I'm thinking this had never been done in its time. I saved a subscription, on how to fix the problem, by looking you up. We'll done. Very easy to follow. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great video. Easy to follow. Nespresso should pay you.
Wow, totally amazed by that hidden nozzle. Fantastic!!
I have just replaced a new brewing unit for the espresso machine and thanks to this video the replacement was easy. Thank you very much for this great video that will surely help a lot of people.
This was great! I realize that I was not doing this properly before so now my machine fully descaled!
I was foolishly swapping cups back and forth 🤣
Hi Stephanie Brown. Glad you found the video useful. Thanks

Hi there, this was my first time descaling my boss's nespresso machine and this video helped me a lot, it's easy and quick. Thanks

Great video - thank you. I used white vinegar solution 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water. Very clear and concise instructions
You're most welcome 👍
Fantastic video. Thank you for making the effort and being very specific and speaking slowly. You assumed we did not know how to do it. This was great b/c many video presenters know how to do it and go so quickly and it does not help. So a very big thank you. I was about to buy a new machine and I think this was all it really needed.
Happy to help Imelda Purcell! Many thanks for the kind feedback, appreciate it 👍
This was extremely helpful as our machine came without a manual. Thank you so much for the very clear instructions.

So helpful. That orange light has been bugging me for a long time 🤪 Thanks for the help. Coffee is tasting much better now👏💛
You’re welcome Lizzie Antonelli Art 😊 Glad you found the video so helpful. Yes my coffee tasted much better too after descaling. Enjoy! 👍
However, Nespresso recommends not waiting long when the cappuccino button lights up orange, because as a Nespresso technician told me once on the phone, the machine could then lock up.
Thanks so much. Bought a used machine with no manual. This worked perfectly.
Legend mate I just used your instructions and my coffee machine is great again thanks alot

It’s absolutely incredible to me that I can have a simple question on how to clean my machine, and find someone who’s made a properly structured video with editing and everything to walk me through the process as simply as possible. People give humans a lot of shit these days, but i’d say we’re pretty cool. Thank you!

I know this is a year late, but found your video whilst trying to work out why my machine had ceased working and what was that orange light flashing? (We got given the machine by a friend second hand and so had never seen any instructions!). Was about to fork out for a new machine but after finding your video and buying a $2 sachet of descaler - it works like new, it has it perfectly up and running again, so thank you very very much - great video!
Great Video, worked like a Charm. Will be checking your out again, since I didn't know why light was orange..Cheers!!
Thank you for the instructions. I am doing this right now :)
