I really like how this game was made during the time when it was still okay to be creative with body kits and making your car stand out. Thanks to the internet, the most negative people have started to be very vocal about their opinions on designs like these, but I'm pretty sure that in reality a lot of people think they're pretty cool. If we're going to make car culture fun again, we need to stop saying "ugly this, ugly that" and "I hate this car and these sorts of car people" and instead focus on the fun aspacts of it and being vocal about the things you think are good instead. Most things in life become a lot more fun if you look at them from the bright side!
Sorry for the little rant, I think I just needed to get this out of me somewhere.

There's only a small chunk of really horrible bodykits, but others are decent or pretty good

Straight facts, I agree with you in 100% but actually I think that there is a certain reason for that. I may be wrong, but... when it was popular? In 2000s yes? What happened in 2008? A crisis and recession. When such modifications started to be "outdated" and "rice"? After 2008. What came after 2008? Stock car stanced on wheels and some coilovers (all from China). Why? because many people had no money after recession to build such crazy imports etc with paintjobs and so on. So if someone cannot afford something cool and gets salty about it, will call it rice and outdated shit. Back in the day, before recession, middle class was way wealthier than now. We didn't have such crisises going on. So we had money to afford it.
Now as everything gets expensive, what's creative and not minimalistic will be called out ugly, because someone gets salty about another person being able to pull that off financially. Who was buying mostly magazines like Super Street, Import Tuner etc? I think that mostly middle class. Because there was most of the interest about it. Poor people couldn't afford a car, rich ones were going for premium brands like Ferraris, Lambos etc.
So I think, if we want to have those times back, we need to make middle class wealthy again (just not in such stupid way like pumping some real estate bubble etc). But if to look at how car companies screw passionate people with agreeing for gasoline cars ban (compare it to gun laws where gun manufacturers disagree and somehow "strangely" politicians cannot overcome them), and how in many countries modifying car is being restricted as much as only possible, I don't know if it will be possible unless people like us would unite and become vocal minority ourselves.
Just my opinion and observations, maybe right, maybe wrong, but wanted to share them with you all as we seem to be missing those good times of car modifications etc :D Maybe someone will have an idea for taking some action that will change the situation into more positive one.

I was only a kid back then, but I remember how much things changed in '08, before it everything felt like it had a much more carefree attitude, while after it there was a great sense of unease which I still think lingers on today. As you said though, what we need is to not only look back at the good times, but creating new ones ourselves. I, for one, have managed to move to Japan and am now studying car mechanics here. During the six months I've been here I've seen that there are absolutely a great number of car enthusiasts out there and my classmate who bought a Subaru Pleo and let me customize it with him for the equivalent of about 5000 bucks show that if you want to, you can definitely still have fun with cars even on a tighter budget. As a side note, we're going to put underglow on it. ;)
I love how the body kits resemble the old Midnight Club cars which Rockstar doesn't have a budget to obtain licensed cars
They had more than enough budget to get licenses for Pagani zonda or even rufs

Fun fact: In the Mission Log and Showroom, the Camaro Concept and Murcielago Roadster's DUB versions use the correct TIS rims (M304/M305), while the one you win/buy uses TIS 11/09 rims instead.

The Datsun will always be one of my favorites. It turns it into a modern looking car and its a good base for vinyl customization.

Zo6 looks like a fisker Karma from the front
Some of those wide-body kits looks great, even on some cars that you didn't expect it and some that you expect based on certain cars to look great end up looking ugly. For example, that Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 '99, with the wide-body kit, the front looks good and like a JGTC race car version until you see the rear which looks damn ugly. The front part of the Mazda RX-7 '95 with the wide-body kit looks like a JGTC Nissan S15 but not the rear, the rear looks more like from a Mercedes. The wide-body kit on the Dodge Challenger Concept "DUB" '06 also looks very good and close to the real version. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X '08 wide-body kit is another well made one, similar to a real version wide-body kit on the same car and the best looking one to me along with the Datsun 280Z '75 and Dodge Challenger Concept "DUB" '06.

The only thing I really don't like about these is the lack of costumization. You either get bumpers, lights, etc _or_ the widebody. Shame because some of these would look amazing if you had more options alongside the widebodies.

@@flame_101 I meant that widebodies *specifically* _remove_ further customization to exterior parts after you apply it, only allowing the tires and interior to be changed
Amazing how this game was very much like us and of its time! If Rockstar had given more budget and time, it would definitely be one of the best street racing games of all time.

The widebody kits make some the cars look ugly IMO
As much as I love most bodykit designs in the game, it's a shame they don't give you room to change the tailights/headlights, spoiler and hood to your own accord. There's definitely a lot of cars I love the bodykit for save for one of those parts.

Had to finish the Test Drive before June 2014, sorry, after Rockstar shut it down, only Doc can have one.
if your on PS3 you just install a 100% save with the R8 unlocked, thats how I got mine
